I know this is such an old video, but boy was it a GREAT video. Over 10 years ago I wrote my thesis and I admit this was one of the more challenging bits when formatting the document. The reason I like this video is because it shows how to link the multi level lists to the STYLES. All the videos I watched just showed how to create multi level lists when where I was really getting undone was the element of LINKING with the styles. Just BRILLIANT.
Thanks, This is really helpful. Specially when you adapt to someone's messed up document & wonder why things are not working as per your expectations. Thanks Again ! This really helped me.
This video is brilliant. I've been struggling to create some templates for about a week now, and kept hitting the problem of 1.1 becoming 1.1.1, then 2.1.1 , then 3.1.1 while still under the 1.1 heading! Your work is the only piece that told me about the section that I had to use where one includes the previous level, working backward not forward. You have saved my bacon and I'm very grateful.
Absolutely brilliant; I have a 15,000 word dissertation and I need to number it and put in a contents page. This is the first guidance I have seen which shows me how to do it (onscreen example), uses enough jargon and not too much, and is really really helpful. The stuff on the microsoft site is crap. Lots of videos are crap. This is magic. Thanks, Michael (much older post-career student!)
At long last, a tutorial on multi-level numbering that makes sense! Every other 'how-to' I've watched on the subject left me confused. Your video unlocked the mystery by including steps the others left out, and explaining them in a logical order. Thank you, it's much appreciated.
I am 70 years old and learning, thanks for explaining in such great detail, made my bible lesson so easy to put together thanks again for GOD has blessed you
Very helpful information. Adding numbers to an outline in Word is more complicated than it needs to be. This video provides really clear instructions as to how to do that. Thank you. I was using Word 2016 on a MAC
This is the most helpful video for table of contents I watched a lot... none of them did mutilevels... ive been stuck all day trying to figure it out Thank you!!!!!!
This is by far the BEST tutorial I've seen on this topic. I love how thorough yet simple it is. I also love how each step was captured. Thanks a million times over❤
Thank you so very much. After watching tens of videos regarding the problem of having a continuation of heading numbers in different chapters, I finally could solve it by watching this amazing video.
Thank you for showing how to handle the Appendix as you did! I didn't know that deleting the outline number part would survive the Table of Contents update. So glad you demonstrated that!
Thank you!! I have spent more time than I want to admit (way more!) trying to 'clean-up' a copy of a State law to provide the advantages of an automatic Table of Contents and automatic renumbering. This is in preparation for an extensive rewrite of our condominium association by-laws. In the process I am trying to master(?) multi-level numbering. The original form of the law state has an archaic, amateur, and confusing numbering scheme. But I want to preserve that scheme so my version is clearly recognized as just a reformatted version of the original. I am a retired high school teacher and I have learned the importance of identifying what can be ignored and to what you must pay attention when confronted with a large, complicated, and new topic. My lengthy trial and error period with multi-level numbering has provided lots of exercise with that process of ignoring/paying attention regarding the menus for multi-level numbering and formatting. Your video made quite a bit of sense when I first watched it and even more so now that I have greater familiarity with menus and styles. Now I think that linking renumbering to headings/styles will resolve my last hurdle of getting unexplained changes in style when I reset list numbers to 1. As a teacher of math and science I also found that providing my students with an over arching analogy or a discussion of structure and function provided a context for the nitty-gritty details of press-this-choose-that-menu,-set-this -value-to-X kinds of instructions. I have to believe there are people at MS that have the ability to take the warehouse of features in Word, that are intended to serve a multitude of scenarios, and provide an explanation of structure, function, and interrelationship that would help users glean what they need for their situation.
This instruction is better than anything else I have seen regarding this topic. Your approach is paced just right and there are simple direct visuals that make short work of a topic that can be tedious and confused. Thanks for your effort.
I followed some videos lost heart along the way all just did an example of chapter 1 leaving you wandering how chapter 2 would get a number on it. Well explained . The best I have seen.
After having seen a few videos on this subject I was still struggling with the numbering. Not anymore since your tutorial was perfect. Exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!
Thank you. As someone previously said, brilliant! The presentation is clear, methodical and on point. One just has to follow the instructions to get it done in no time. Life saving information for those of you who work with contracts and lots of other complex & long documents like bachelor/master/doctorate thesis.
Thank you so much for this video. Though I know this feature I never knew that this is how we give heading numbering. I struggled a lot with this. Now, this is not a problem for me. Thanks a lot for sharing this.
@@YoungCareerPros as of now I've spent 2 hours trying to figure out something and hopefully you might help. Say I have a heading on a page and want to insert a table under that heading. For some reason the table, which stretches over 2 pages long and breaks correctly, just jumps on the next page, after the heading I want it directly under. Safe to say there is enough space under the heading for almost half the table...
Oh man! That is a bummer- there are several possible causes. Here is a good article with several possibilities: www.google.com/amp/s/cybertext.wordpress.com/2014/09/18/word-table-or-table-row-goes-to-next-page/amp/. Let me know if any of these suggestions solve your issue. Worst case you can email me the doc and I can have a look this weekend.
OMG, I’ve been struggling with this multilevel list since last year when I started drafting my Standard Operating Procedure. Today, I came across your video and it’s amazing how easy it was to fix the numbering in my document. Love it! Thank you so much for the step by step explanation.
😮😮😮OMG I think this is AMAZING! I just wasted 2 hrs trying to figure the format and style in a document! You managed to help me fix it! The navigation pane is the 💣!!
I have watched several videos on different formatting issues (especially since the upgrades) and this was by far the best one I found, thank you so so much for clarifying my frustration:)
Thank you. The numbering scheme has always been one of the most unintuitive ways of defining multilevel lists, and about time it was revamped. The video make the functionality bearable.
i watched 4 or 5 videos before watching yours and i must say you made me understand the best out of all the other people who taught this. thank you very much!
Daniel Simpson 1 second ago Thanks so much for this. After formatting the styles for the levels I can see how quick it is. Numbering and indents in MS Word has been driving me bonkers for a long time!!!, it was one of the mysteries of the universe ;)
Excellent. I have been looking at some videos which have significantly more views than this video, but this is by far the most excellent video I have seen on this topic. Well done!
My first technical writing exercise was responding to an RFP on an old DEC main frame. It had an APP called WordPerfect. And it was... perfect at least in its multi-level numbering capability. Then, it was like a week later DEC went out of business and up sprouted MicroSoft. I struggled with this need in Word for years, usually reverting to manually setting up the document. Where my first MS Office purchases were Word95 and then Office 2000. They came close at times but never this comprehensive. Though not clearly intuitive. I always figured WordPerfect had patents on the process/technology preventing MS form a clear and intuitive implementation. Thank you very much for this much needed video.
Bravo! Applause! I have been struggling all day with numbered headings. Of course Microsoft had to make it difficult. Thank you for this. I guess the only thing I wouldn't do would be to backspace over the numbers in an Appendix heading. You explained things perfectly and I can't wait to go back to my document tomorrow and show it who's boss.
I am working on my thesis. And I worked hard to number my thesis headings. And I was not successful with that. Finally I have found what I was looking for. I am so thankful for you sequenced video. Much love
Thank you so much for your response. I will give that a try. The tabs and indents are all over the place. The margins, when adjusted, cause a nightmare to the indents and tabs.... The list goes on. Some of these outlines are 25 pages long with three separate divisions. It gets rather complicated as you can imagine. A couple years ago I "fixed" one by starting at the top and deleting the outline levels one line at a time, deleting spaces until it was on the preceding line then hitting return (enter). Then I could indent or unindent and repeat with the next line. What a hassle! Thanks again for the reply.
Great video! The whole process is very convoluted and nonintuitive. I have read several written tutorials and couldn't get anywhere. This really cleared things up. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I was struggling with that and it was delaying me from actually writing my thesis for which I have limited time anyway with my 12-month old son. Thank you!!!
Has cleared the concept. Was always struggling while making project reports. Thank you. Will get enhanced readibility for the readers. Much Appreciated.
It helps a lot and more in details. Many videos have a million views without any valuable information. I wonder why your video not reached in view count which having such valuable information. Really great job. Please do more video is Microsoft word like 1. inserting only figure number inside the paragraph. 2. insert the first name and year from the reference section.
Fabulous tutorial. It is really easy to get lost in the style area in Word. Thanks for providing clear instructions - you got me out of a jam with the user manual I am writing!
Thank you for this beautiful presentation; you were very patient and very easy to follow. I now have a better understanding of the multiple levels arrangement and about to apply it to an MOM I have been battling with for some time now. Merci beaucoup!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I knew enough to be dangerous and can number a list but never an outline like this. Amazing tool to now be able to use. And yes I know it's there but I could never figure it out, so it's not intuitive at all.
Oh thank you, Gina! I was tearing my hair out, oh hasn't Word changed! Excellent video, a great speed to follow and take in, excellent explanation and I'm totally on the same page as you about completing things by showing TOC as well. So glad I came across your video and channel :)
Thank you, madam, for giving such a wonderful tutorial about the formatting of technical documents, it helped me a lot. it reduces my effort and repetitive work.
You are awesome! This is a perfectly made video on numbering that will be extremely helpful to me as an admin. I love the way you explain everything in a manner that makes it easy to understand the first time.
Wow, where have you been all my life? That video was just about as good as it gets! Clear, concise, and very well organized! Thank you so much! I am looking forward to viewing some of your other material! Have a great day.
