Also, for people wondering, it’s not just simply that home theater people listen louder, it’s that the content is mixed different in terms of vocal level. For movies I find myself around -10dBFS. For tv I find myself around -16dBFS. For music I usually find myself around -15dBFS to -30dBFS. 0dBFS being 102dB-105dB at the MLP.

85dB is the reference; most tend to find that a bit loud (according to the research that I dug up; also mentioned in Toole's book). But we gotta have room for those dynamic swings. If your speaker cuts that off, that sucks.

I find the opposite to be true for me, my average listening level for music is higher whether I am using the 2 channel or HT system. For grins, I monitored SPL levels for an action movie that I played at my normal levels. The average vocals were in the 70 to 73 db range ( hushed vocals were lower) and the action sequences averaged about 90db, with the peak reading of 102db. My average for music tends to run in the 85 to 90db range with peaks at 105; music recordings on the whole are more compressed by the recording engineer. My 2 channel system does this better mainly becaused the horn based towers can play close to club levels without much strain. These are generalities and may change for different music/ movies, but it is what I find to be generally true. I grew up in a time where live bands were the norm in clubs, so that has stayed my reference for music listening. The only clubs with a PA and a DJ were a few " Disco clubs" with the light up dance floors ( I am dating myself 😁), fortunately, they were not around too long.

Another amazing video Erin! This is why I am such a big proponent of studio monitors because you can easily do both music and HT. Most people know that studio monitors have a flat on axis response, but most don't realize how much output the larger 3-way studio monitors possess. Outputs of 120+dB are the norm with some going up to 130dB. Movies are mixed on these monitors. I have amazing dual purpose systems using Adam S3V's and Emotiva Stealth 8's.

I agree. I have mixed usage and use large studio monitors for the mains (EV Sentry III), and while they go plenty low for music, the subs really compliment them for the low end. The rest of the HT speakers are considerably cheaper!

Anytime you can get a speaker with some "balls" behind it in the house it's likely going to do a good job for mixed duties. That's the only time I think the audiphile speakers fail is when they don't quite have enough sensitivity and or total output for that realism at higher playback levels that you tend to need for movies

Erin thank you for another great educational video, you are making Dr. Toole’s book live, 👍🏻 and make it much more accessible for non scientists and engineers. The room is over 50% of what we hear which is why speakers always sound different when compared to having a demo in a dealer showroom! A well designed speaker should sound good regardless of usage. In addition listening closer to the speaker helps reduce the room sound! The key is to have an acoustically treated room with the lowest floor noise possible. Of course using a good EQ like Genesis from Anthem helps with getting better sound. Personally, I am a Home Theater enthusiasts first and also enjoys well recorded SACD multichannel music and Blu-Ray concert! Having a collection of over 2000 movies and a couple hundred multichannel SACD of classical music, I don’t care much anymore for stereo! Also Apple Music albums remastered in Atmos is really cool!

I really appreciate the effort you put into this video. If I had this video earlier I would have saved hours and hours of research to finding the right speakers for my room, taste, listening habits and budget. This video confirms and summs up a lot of things I spend month of to research. Wasn't easy to research, especially because many review speakers very subjektiv and without measurements. Wich is fine, but makes it difficult to compare products and to determining their (best) usecase

Awesome video… just had a discussion related to this about home theater 5.2.2 system. Using ceiling atmos in front and putting back surround a few feet higher up on the wall pointed down since the atmos software is going to send all rear upper and side information to your surround rears.. With more forgiving vertical axis speakers I think this is the best option.

Before I watch: For me, if I were to draw a line, a speaker meant for home theater will trade bass for higher sensitivity (e.g., PowerSoundAudio speakers). I personally wouldn’t use anything

Yep exactly this. Sensitivity in my opinion is one of the more important attributes for HT but from my experience speaker shopping for upgrades all the bookshelf speakers are like plays down to 40hz F3 and I'm over here thinking about Hoffman's iron law and how these reasonably sized speakers can't be sensitive. I just need enough clean output to fill 80hz with 12db/octave slope but bass is what sells. Yes stuff with larger than 6.5" woofers exist doing what I want but those aren't practical always.

Really great job of bringing everything into a simple to understand perspective. I'm a two channel guy and I use my systems for both music and tv/movies. I'd like to see more speakers that really hit the priorities of both HT and hifi. The THX Arendal Sound speakers have garnered a little attention recently in forums probably for the reason that they satisfy the desires of both camps at a price that's relatively affordable. Seems to be uncommon to find that.

I agree. I have high standards for sound quality... My home theater system must be hifi quality or it's just loud noise. So many home theater in a box systems are all about speaker count and loudness with sound quality being lowest priority. Movie soundtracks are incredible and deserve near hifi quality reproduction.

I built three of those DIYSG HTM-12 for my home theater's LCR. It was a few years ago but I paid $366 per speaker shipped for the full kit including flat packs. I don't have much to compare with but the sound and imaging I get from them always blow me away. The build process was relatively simple but rewarding. When it comes to my Left Center Right, I have absolutely zero FOMO about possible upgrades. If anyone is thinking about DIY or just wants to get great value theater mains, I can't recommend these enough.

Great Video!!! Your educational content is always Awesome!!! Got a 5.2.4 with Imagine X from PSB plus 2 polk HTS-12 powered with Onkyo TX-RZ740 and an emotiva a2 for LR Front speakers PSB X2T towers. Got 2 EQ one for HT and an almost flat one for 2ch. The PSB work very well both cases in my opinion.

Truly great Erin! I think there are 3 points to make out of this: 1: need different speakers for each case. 2: the home theater room has to be dadicated and treated acousticly, due to very high SPL's. 3: I prefer listening my hi-fi rig at night or with eyes closed. I feel I focus better on hearing only. When you watch a movie you satisfy also your vision so you are in a different state of mind.

I’m both. I have a dedicated stereo amp hooked to the preamp LR front of my AVR. Movies with EQ and music without EQ. But I did integrate a sub to my stereo to mitigate the dips in the bass.

@@ErinsAudioCorner I was thinking. I've measured my best recordings on CD and best result i have got is 17dB of dynamics (used foobar plugin, don't exactly remember how it calculates). So that would lead me to conclusion that if I do not like listening very loud (more than 85dB - usually 75dB) I'm good with almost every speaker and every amp.... So why on audio websites they always tell me that my 400W amp is too weak for my Dynaudios? What this is about? If they have 86dB@2W for most music probably i do not use more than 2W per channel. Sometimes, when I get louder (95dB and more) my limiter kicks in... But in my subwoofer ;-) Other thing is... Do you know what is the dynamic range in movies? Just by watching them casually I can hear that it is much more than music. But just curious... Based on your wideo I got the feeling that Home Theater requires better speakers. And this is my observation as well. If you have good HT speakers they most likely will sound great in 2 channel system (as you mentioned EQ may be required but this will be easy. Unlike audiophile speakers. Have you ever tried EQuing B&W speakers?:D)

I remember the old model JBL speakers had a built in relay switch which functioned to change the movie or music mode. Yes, in one speaker cabinet there are 2 sets of speakers, you can set the mode from the AV processor. But now modern receivers can change movie or music modes digitally with just one speaker

This flowed real well Erin, covered the generalities real well. Another factor in why 2 channel system guys don't EQ is that 2 channel amp systems do not have it natively built in or make it easy to implement. Tape monitor loops where you could implement a graphic or PEQ at line level are pretty much gone. Pre out / Main In is also rare in 2 channel amps and EQ's may not deal well with the voltage swings there. I am lucky enough to have a good room for my 2 channel setup and got good response the old fashion way through setup ( and Yamaha Pure Direct mode really does sound better than when tone controls are in the loop) Like you, my music is in the 85-90db average range ( If a snare hit doesn't startle you, it's not loud enough 😁)

The high end Linn streamers have room correction built in. Personally I find eq muddies the mid range and sound stage, and can cause strange holes In the frequency response. Although I have a Sonos one which while not true hifi does do room correction really well. I think eq works much better when it’s digital, especially when you have a digital crossover.

@@cybergornstartrooper2157 Room correction is EQ. If you're using room correction, you're using EQ. All it is, is shifting the intensity of the signal at certain frequency ranges.

@@chrisanderson4387 I fully realise this hence why I use the terms interchangeably in my comment. Perhaps I should have chosen one and stuck with it to avoid confusion. My point is eq can cause the midrange to be muddied but done well, especially in the digital domain can enhance the listening experience. I have the Yamaha a1010 and eq on this amp, while effective in movies, is not so good for music which is why i always defeat it for music using pure direct.

Hi there, I am currently looking for a pair of bookshelf Speakers 🔊. No plan on getting a sub so I prefer the speakers with good bass. I understand that I need a 2 channel amplifier as well. My budget is $500. What would you recommend?

This was fantastic. I have so many questions now about how a recording can capture instrument directivity (say, your sax example) in the original venue, and then how the devil you're supposed to reproduce that in your room with a speaker that has a fixed directivity. No wonder room treatment is so important. The room has to be near dead for this to have a hope of working. Not mentioned (or maybe I missed it?) the center speaker. Especially for those of us without a screen. You've spoken on the issue before, might be good to reference those.

Room treatment for first reflection is key. Makes a huge improvement if done right (left, right, floor, ceiling)

do you know of any videos showing exactly how to calculate where the first reflection points are based on your speaker position relative to walls? I've seen videos of people saying to treat the early reflections but no direction on how to find those points

A great amount of information you share. One question for you, and this came to mind when I was replying to one of the comments: what about speakers which are not boxes? You don't do high-end stuff (though I noticed you tested a $5k Klipsch), I understand, but when I see Home Depot (Magnolia) offering up Martin Logan hybrids for HT I have to wonder how well they are working out as such. I've not heard such a set-up myself but have seen images of such rooms and I do question how well dipoles can work for HT.

Hi Erin! What speakers are that in your home theater? They look like they use the new SB acoustics beryllium dome in WG with purifi (which sounds promising), but I can't find anything that combines those 2.

Those aren't the ones I actually use in my home theater; they are just ones I was demoing for review. They are the March Audio Sointuva. I am planning on the posting the written review for them today. :)

Erin, can you revisit for me the Kef Ref 1 short port vs long port and how it impacts sound quality. These to be used in a stereo/home theater 2 channel system. For me the long port, goes lower but sounds less controlled, the short port goes less lower but gives me a tighter base response with little to no overhangs. I know the short answer is whichever sounds best but I’m not sure which one is more accurate and true to the audio being played. You mentioned you liked the short port in your home theater room but then when moved them up to your two channel stereo room, either port made much of a drastic difference. Well, this really confused me. Can you tell me, given what you were hearing and based on your measurements, which port sounded more like real to the event it was reproducing? Something else that I might add to help you assess my situation, the speakers sound the clearest mid vocals when I use little to no tow in. I find if toed, it sometimes reproduces vocals less clearly. I hope you can offer your thoughts here to help me get the most out of these magnificent Ref 1 Metas. Thank you, DS

Either type of speaker can, in theory, be used for either application, however, home theater speakers, in particular, usually have a very different tuning to pump up the mids and midbass response moreso than the upper treble. If you're comfortable with using EQ, it is entirely possible to correct for this in the vast majority of cases. The other potential downside to trying to run home theater speakers for your HiFi is that you've likely had to make some compromises to your front stage and amplifier setup in order to get surround speakers and a receiver with enough channels and capability to run said surround sound. So, in a lot of instances, a home theater setup may be a few compromises too many for a HiFi enthusiast. Obviously, all of these problems can be resolved if you're willing and able to throw enough money at the problem, but it's still an important thing to recognize and many people just getting into either hobby may not understand this just starting out, so videos like this have a lot of utility.

Good solid hifi floorstanders for ur left and right. Then add in same brand sourround speakers for the rest. Best of both worlds and a huge front line of sound for ur fronts .

So in Home Theater, I would most likely need SVS center channel speaker and SVS PB Subwoofer; and in "Purist" Stereo 2.1, add a SVS SB-1000 pro and some hi-res Raal tweeters?

I do care so much about linearity and high output; plus, it would be great to hear what speakers sound even without equalization, so yeah I'm into home theater and 2-channel music. I am willing to upgrade from my Polk T50 floorstanding speaker that I purchased since the mid-2010s (probably later 2010s but I don't have the receipt from Best Buy regarding my purchase date). The speakers that I have that can play down to around 35Hz or so. I'm going to go for neutral-sounding speakers front speakers (I do not have room for a center speaker for the time being as I'm in a small room in a rental house).

You can DSP the frequency curve to correct for preference but extended dynamics and controlled dispersion is what you pay for.

I’m confused tho. Are all reflections equal to the direct freq on axis response ? That is, when a sound wave from the speaker hits a bare floor isn’t it going to reflect an uneven response then let’s say reflection from drapes or a table , or a sofa? Thanks

Checked out a few of your videos today. Found them informative and entertaining. But I was also the kid who got the book on speaker box design from the local radio shack back in elementary school. Having that experience with geometry and algebra going into middle school kinda surprised the teacher. haha Was hoping you had checked out the Dayton AIR series. I've heard very good things about the B652-AIR for their price and was thinking that they might make a pretty decent set for a cheap HT setup.

I'm actually someone who built a home theater for games first and maybe some movies and shows later. Most of the shows I watch are in 2-channel anyway, so I only benefit from the home theater with games and the occasional movie. I've been doing more movies since April when I started buying and ripping Blu-rays, but other than that, I'm none of the stereotypes you're presenting in this video.
