This reviewing gig is pretty fun until you get something like this. I feel bad for you that you had this experience (presumably) early in your channel history. But being honest about the faults without ranting just to entertain will earn you respect. Well done.
It's a good feeling to put something out there to hopefully save someone money, I had good fun with these solely because of how messed up they are, I don't wanna imagine what it'd be like to be in the position of spending 2k of hard earned money on them though. That wouldn't be fun at all.
Made them better built and then completely messed up the tuning. There open backs have always had massive treble spikes too so not sure why people give Hifiman a chance. The only i like is sundara but it still has an irritating 8khz peak.
Doesn't look that bad on the graph, apart from that 900 Hz centered hump and the general wobbliness. And the chanel imbalance across the entire frequency range... I get it that it's hard to make a good closed back, but why even release something like this? Especially when there are actually decent options from Shure and AKG for literally 10% of the price. Do they not care about brand image and reputation?
Here's a fun fact, the driver in these bags of shit is 100% the same driver they use in the commonly sold for under $120, yet equally terrible sundara closed back just in a different orientation. Ask your enemies if they like honk
@@CammyFi Man, those were a huge disappointment for me. I was hoping that maybe they'd managed to up their closed back game since their previous closed model, which was unleashed upon the world quite some time ago IIRC. I REALLY wished for a closed back planar in that price range.
They're absolutely beautiful headphones. But your explanation of the sound really dampens my enthusiasm. Channel imbalance! Damn, I wonder if you got a defective pair. Thanks for another great review.
They sent me 3 sets...all of them with the same erratic FR and bad channel imbalance. I sat my SO down to listen to them as well. She has little to no critical listening experience and she said immediately "don't like like them," she also heard the channel imbalance and described an effect similar to what @CammyFi called being in a cave. It's just a bad model that was released before it was ready, unfortunately.
I had the Audivina and returned them immediately. Easily the worst HP's ever for classical music, worse than the earbuds that came with transistor radios in the 1960's. Trash.
I cannot believe the positive reviews on headfi it just proves that listen to the price and not the actual sound. A random person not interested in sound at all could hear these as terrible.
The R9's after a pad change to fenestrated sheepskin sound great imo. Tones the bass down a little bit so it doesn't drown out the mids and highs. And slightly improves the detail to my ear. Also the pads are thicker than stock, look better as full sheepskin, and feel more comfortable.
I don't know about your units, but mines are good, construction is not the best but sound is amazing. I have a FOCAL Celestee and AUDIVINA is much better in comfort, transparency, details, sound and almos everything. The level of details is just amazing. Don't know why you have such a bad experience. It is true it is different from everything I heard, but details are there. Soundstage is amazing for a closeback headphone, it is true that don't isolate a lot.
@CammyFi probably my old ears can't difference sounds very well. But listening Numb from Marina, the voice is far, the piano is excellent, the violins amazing and pure, and everything is there. I'm happy with them atm. Also Steve N Seagulls is great for listening with them.
@AVICK_22 Fair enough if you like them, but my opinion of them very closely matches other people's opinion whom I've spoken, and people who tried them at canjam when I was there also.
@AVICK_22 Adding on, of course, there will be a few people who like them, but my goal is to provide unbiased reviews with a mix of subjective and objective points of view.
