First headphone review I've ever watched. "There is none headphone perfect". From an electric guitar, tube amp, and pedal hobbyist who is also a mouse and keyboard enthusiast, fantastic job. The best hobbies are those that give you the room to always seek something better. I've never spent more than ~$150 on headphones, and I thought that was enough, but always knew that guitars just didn't sound the same as they do in person. The best I've ever had, subjectively, are the HyperX Cloud II straight into my motherboard's integrated amp, so I basically feel like I know nothing. I'm a total noob to this scene, but so far, this set will be my entry once I can afford it along with a suitable amp. Thanks for a great video!

The Sundaras have been my favorite and end game headphone for everything since I ever picked one up new (open box) for $280. Haven't changed the pads or anything on the Sundaras and I am in love with them. Haven't used my DT880 or HD660S ever since.

@@MrJodete23 gaming in my experience has been fantastic. The Sundara is much more airy and open in soundstage than my 660s and DT990 600ohm. It also has the my clarity of details plus It can handle a little bass boost in EQ or dac/amp without distortion. Its also easy to power. I power it just fine with a $40 FiiO e10k

Keep your Beyer and Sennheisers u gone need them after some months. Hifiman doesnt last long and thats known to anyone. Personally speaking i get my third pair of Sundaras in 9 days from now. I hope these not have any driver problems.

I love the Sundara's, I just got them and they're everything that everyone has boasted about and more! I've tried the Thei Audio, Beyerdynamic DT 780 Studio, Sennheiser HD 58X, 600's, Audio Quest Night Owls, and the Sundara's are my favorite out of all of them by far! Great Review Zeos!

I just got mine yesterday and ahhhhhh!!! The treble is so good...clean, clear , effortless, non sibilant treble. Resolve Reviews has a video called Sundara-coming up for air, it's about as close to 100% of my thoughts you can get. Either they're building them better now or I got a good one cause when i grab it by the headband and shake it hard it doesn't drop spaces and seems sturdy.

I returned these for the Hifiman HE5se's. Less treble on the top end, but substantially more bass on the bottom. Also, in my opinion, better imaging and soundstaging. They list for $699, if you can still get 'em (limited edition cans), but I picked mine up on an Adorama sale for $300. Cost-to-benefit, my best audio purchase ever.

@@whn2309 I listen to a variety of genres: prog rock, "classic" rock, metal, alternative pop, folk/pop, jazz. The HE5se is a good all-arounder, so it doesn't really lag with a particular type of music. My amp is a Liquid Spark, which sits at the end of a chain that includes Tidal Hi Fi streaming to the Roon app, then through Fx Sound Enhancer and a Schiit Modi 2 DAC to the amp. It's a real budget setup designed to give me the best bang for the buck. Which it does.

I am a Campfire Cascade bass head and I approve this headphone. Not saying they have the bass you're looking for; but dollars to donuts one of the most pleasing headphones I've heard. Top 3 at CanJam in my opinion.

They sound like exactly the headphone I am looking for. I was having an ey on the DT1990 but I think these would fit my taste more as I am looking for a headphone that lets me comfortably listen to detail without making my ears hurt or my brain take fire.

At saturday I actualy went to a local hifi shop (its pretty cool I think) and listened to a few headphones cheapest beeing the sundara. I spend allmost all the time just listening to the sundaras and they left me listening for quite a while. I tryed most of the others twice but always came back to the sundaras. Didnt listen to a higher model from hifiman though as I couldnt afford it anyways. And you could, if you want to, drive this of a phone but the soundquality is seriously worse with less punch and energy in the base, verry hollow voices, sharp highs and actualy some distortion there even over usbc with a dac. With a great amp though they are absolutly amazing I cant wait for when I go back and buy them tomorrow.

It is from Sanskrit so not Sun☀️dara but Su - ndara like super. Sundara means beautiful. Similarly with Susvara means pleasant sound also su- like super.

Glad I got my second pair before this video came up. I even joined your patreon for this month just to see what you said about them early. These are a steal at $350. Bass heads might add a bit of EQ. I use +6.2dB with a Q of 0.48 and get a great thump. These are open front volume unlike Audeze with their thick pads so their bass extension isn't as far without EQ.

I've had mine for about a month, and I love them. My cord started to fall apart, though, after 2 days of careful use. Hifiman customer service is uninspiring, at best.

@@dennisvanderben2719 yes absolutely, I use them all the time for sound design work and producing and I also can do most of the mix on them with ease. I prefer mixing on studio monitors though. I think the bass on them is excellent, they dig pretty deep but don't hype it, so I totally understand that people who are used to headphones with stronger bass, that it might sound a bit recessed. I however think the bass, mids and highs are nicely balanced, it reminds me of good studio monitors.

@@dennisvanderben2719 Yes, I've used the K701, K702 and K712 pro before switching brand and pick the Sundara. I don't think the AKG K7xx line is bad, I just think the Sundara is a step up when it comes to resolution/speed. I also feel the Sundara has a more correct soundstage, with the AKG it can be perceived as a bit too wide sometimes.

I have to agree with you on the Sundara. When I got to review them around 18 months ago I really thought they were a great turning-point for HiFiMAN, especially in the build quality department. The sound, whilst a little bass-light, I thought was also exemplary of what HM can achieve when they actually get their shit together. Unfortunately, it seems more like they were an anomaly since every HM I've reviewed since then have had build quality issues.

I bought these a year ago (january 2020) based on a ton of research as i prefer open backs for soundstage and had wanted to try plannars for years. One year later and my only regret is that I hadnt tried plannars years ago. I love how clean these sound. The only issue i had was that out of the box i got a defective cable with a bad connection inside the jack which wasn't a big deal since i had also ordered a balanced cable for them.

@@shravananyam That's a Bluetooth with built in DAC. Not a passive headphone. Not heard much after the initial reviews. No modding ability really. Since it's got a built in DAC/amp with DSP it's been electronically correct and still have not heard rave reviews so I will pass. Right now the best closed passive planars under 800 are the 1060c by monoprice and they seem to be popular because you can mod them and remove the backs.

If you want something reasonably priced that will warm the Sundara up a little look at the hipdac, watch Z's review and then go watch a few more first. Anyone tell you you need a thousand dollar plus amp to bring out the "real sound" then don't subscibe

I had the Sundara's they were great on somethings, not so much on others. Especially games. Got some 1990s and have been very happy. Sundara's are like a 9/10 on somethings and a 7/10 on others. 1990s are like an 8-8.5 but on everything with better build quality. Still plan on getting another pair of Sundara's a bit later though. Really loved them for music. "Natural" is the perfect word. Nothing else I experienced in my price range sounded more like I was listening to real voices/instruments, they sound live but better.

Just out of curiosity, do you listen to DSDs and FLACs or try the sound quality with lossy compressions like MP3 and AAC too... Do these headphones amplify the lossy compression noise while listening at moderate to high volumes?

I purchased these from Amazon recently. I guess they are my first "real headphones" They do sound good to me but I just can't get over the lack of bass impact. If I were to return them and buy LCD-2Cs would they provide the bass impact or do I have to go with dynamics? If a dynamic what would be recommended for under $1K that will give me good sound and some bass impact?

At AXPONA HIFIman special was $280. Cable cloth covered. $80 for longer cable. Deep in booklet, they recommend 100 hr breakin. Replaced the 400S still working fine. Balanced sound almost obsoletes regular drivers at this price point.

I've been waiting for the Focal Stellia review because I have them on the way to me for a week but I also am getting the Sundara's to review so this was a timely review. The way Zeos described them is kind of how I expect them to be. But I am surprised just how much he liked them . Unfortunately I am looking for a modern day replacement for the HE-500 and as good as the Sundara's are I'm not sure they will fit the bill. but still can't wait to hear them .

I sold mine 2 years ago. The HE 560 is honestly a disappointment, and the hype around it has been more a placebo than what is actually based on reality. I A/Bed it over and over with the humble mid-end HD600 and ATH-AD1000x, and felt no reason whatsoever to keep the 560. For the price at that time ($700), it was absolutely crud. Really comfortable, however. The HE-400 (discontinued) honestly is superior sonically to the HE-560. My Stax L300 beats them all handily, except in the subbass department.

Oh snap, I see the Marantz HD-DAC1! Even though I moved on from that to my TA-ZH1ES, I still have a lot of love for it. I'm curious to hear what you think of it. On topic, I'm sorta interested in getting a pair of Sundaras, I just have my doubts that they'd be as good as the HE-500s. The HE-500s have been such a hard act to follow for me, even the HD800 don't quite measure up.

Same for me. Especially after adding a few mods to the HE-500, everything else is underwhelming. Then recently one of my drivers developed a 5dB imbalance, and Hifiman offered an 'upgrade' of the Sundara if I traded my old HE-500 in and paid the 'difference'... I didn't take their offer, I kept the HE-500 and built a resistor adapter for it instead, and never looked back. Sundara seems to be more like 'the best HE-400 mod ever'? But I've never seen a photo of the Sundara driver... curious to see if it's DNA is closer to the fivehundred series or the fourhundreds.... so that's just speculation based on measurement graphs and my experience modding an HE-400.

@@HungryCheff Step up in which way? Because it's certainly not in build quality ... and compared to Hifiman, that's saying something! XD ... but seriously, I've read a lot of bad things about Verum 1's having driver failure problems. Also, frequency response doesn't read better either.... never heard one, but I'm still totally sceptical about that one from the graphs and comparisons I've read elsewhere (SBAF etc).

Natural... that's just the word I used in my own review. They sound natural. Effortless, open, and natural. Like you, Zeos, I have a lot of headphones. Being a reviewer will do that to you. Sundara is currently my most-listened to. Not because it is my best headphone. That would be the Audeze LCD-3. But I don't listen to my best headphone 95% of the time. I save that for special sessions. The HD6XX was my everyday headphone. You know, the cans you grab when you play a game, or watch RU-vid, etc... now it is Sundara. Yes, I would like them to have more bass, like the HD6XX. But they sound so right, and beat the Sennheiser in every other way. They've just become indispensable to me. PS. The HD800 proves that bass and soundstage are not a necessary association. ;)

Add about 3 to 4 db of eq from 50hz down to 20 hz. If that doesn't give you enough bass with the Sundaras, you probably should just get some Beats. Ifi makes a Zen Can Signature series for Hifiman phones with a button to activate an eq curve tailored to Hifiman phones in general, and the Sundara, in particular.

Beware! After owning a pair of these for 15 months (1 year, 3 months) the right channel began distorting and then died completely, This was not a cable problem. For the first 12 months I was not able to register these headphones on the Hifiman website due to endless errors in page scripts. Despite errors on their side of registration, they refused to extend the warranty and are asking $180.00 as a replacement and want the money up front before even providing the details of how replacement will happen. Otherwise, nice headphones - if they worked.

Are these (used) worth $100 more than the Takstar HF 580 and if I don't mind taking the foam out are the Thieaudio better sounding than these? Bass doesn't matter to me, I'm more about accuracy.

I’m searching for an upgrading for my fidelio x2 since after many years of work they are breaking up. I was interested in the sundara because by description they seems to have a similar sound signature. Would they be a good choice considering that I value soundstage, speed and I don’t mind a slight v shape? Consider that my budget is 450$, I generally don’t like the senheiser should signature and that I’ve a decent fiio dac/amp combo?

P.s.: for those who can be interested, in the end I bought the lcd2c as an upgrade, compared to the x2 the sound is much cleaner, the base is outstanding, the midrange is really nice and the treble I would say it’s very similar to the x2. If you love the base it’s a great upgrade, but if you love the x2 soundstage you may be disappointed in the absence of it in the lcdc2 that compensate it with a much cleaner imaging.

My sundaras the bass really depends on the song. A lot of hip hop bass doesnt boom much. Throw on some modal soul (we all make mistakes the song i think it was) and oh dear god its perfect. Perfect wub wub cans and classical

Hi! You guys might help me here. I bought the Sundarars and a Ifi Zen dac. I wanted to plug my headphones to the balanced output so I bought an extra 3.5mm female to 4.4mm male jack adaptater. The problem is that it got worse, so much worse... there was a buzz sound and the music got all messed up. Si I send back my adaptater thinking it had an issue... So my question is : is the Sundara stock cable balanced ? Do I just have to get a working 3.5mm to 4.4mm adaptater to use the Ifi zen dac balanced output? Thanks. Hope someone find this message

Hi!The stock cable its not balanced,u need balanced cables that end in 4,4mm and an adapter 4,4 mm to 6,3 mm or xlr or 3,5 whatever u need if u want to play them unbalanced if u have different amplifiers!Sorry for my bad english!

I just got a pair of Sundara, had them about a week now. I think they sound great. Plenty of bass for me, and I'm a bass player. The only thing I don't like is the cable. The cable it crap. I ordered a new pair of cables yesterday.

Gotta say, from my experience with the Sundaras, i think the most important part of this Video is his comment on grainyness. The Sundara just isn't. And that's what sets it apart.

Love ur reviews Z. I recently got 6xx and sundaras, The 6xx mids are good but standard kill them imo. The build quality on the 6xx is disturbing I had to buy new pads and cable. I did spend 25 bucks on a cable for sundaras well worth it fabric cable. I'm a musician 🎸 and the sundaras sound much closer to my hedd MK2 speakers then the 6xx, I wouldn't want to wear the 6xx for more then an hour or two. I also own the Beyer 880s, I would buy sundaras again. Openbox 300$ worth it imho. Thanks for ur vids

Can anybody clarify for me? The ear pads don't look easily replaceable. Last cans I had with a pleather ear cup started flaking apart after a couple years and it really sucked because the manufacturer doesn't sell the pads separately.

I don't know if it's just because I'm use to them or what but I don't find the Aiva's to be violent or overly bright sounding at all anymore. I never liked bright headphones until the Aiva and now I can say that they're my favorite headphone I've ever had and I've had a few good ones, hell I still have the LCD-2C and HP-3 and I love both but they're just a step behind my beloved Aiva's. Anyway, about the Sundara, I think I might get a pair for shits and giggles.

I significantly preferred the DT 1990 over the Sundaras especially with A pads. Siblance can we be an issue with them but it's easily fixed with eq. Also Quality control is a big issue with Hifiman.

When it comes to Dac's and Headphone Amplifiers you can absolutely trust Zeos opinion if you throw out his ridiculous anti Blue LED obsession..... But I know his opinion of how a headphone should sound is so far away from what I find enjoyable that I watch the videos while paying no attention to his opinion .... But lately the Stellia's, Sundara's and several IEMs my opinion is almost the same so now I'm worried....am I going deaf ?

Guys anyone know what format Zeos uses as his Music Player on his PC? I think both Zeos and Joshua Valour Use the Same Player. I’m just sure there’s better than VLC player which I use. As for the Sundara Cans they look great and I have the HE4XX but I wonder if they are that much better than the HE4XX.

Where did you get these exact cables? I only find some either with only one ring on the ends, which plug into the drivers or 2.5mm ones. But the Sundara needs 3.5mm ones.

Oi, Zeos. With a slight modification the Yoke from the Phantom can fit into the headband of the Sundara. Makes it a bit tighter on the clamp but more comfortable IMO.
