High airflow fan: typical 3 blade ceiling fan. Moves ridiculous amount of air but you dont really feel the air current moving. High static pressure: standing fan, wall mounted fan. Less air moved but the air can push through windows.

Although that's the best analogy of common examples, to be more accurate: Fan #1 (High Airflow) ...can move air with more speed Fan #2 (High Static Pressure) ...can move air with more force. So generally, while Fan #1 can move the air faster, Fan #2 can move it faster _through a filter_ ...or radiator, etc. ...Fan #2 does this by generating more pressure than #1 is able to, which forces the air thru tight spaces (aka restrictions) more effectively.

That was quite a good explanation. The part where you explained how dense blades are required to push or pull air against resistance was most interesting to me. So for a case, I'd use low static pressure fans with exception of: lower front with dust filter (to overcome the filter's resistance better) and as the continuation of air coming from a non-stock CPU fan that is blowing sideways. Since you were talking about the importance of RPM for static pressure fans, that also means that you probably don't want to throttle them as much as air flow optimized fans via PWM.

The other day someone asked me why does a helicopter have such a few blades on its rotor and a jet engine compressor has so many blades in it. I suppose I could have answered that a propeller in an airplane or a rotor in a helicopter needs to have a high velocity to change the momentum of the air in question while the jet engine has so many blades for it needs to build up pressure and there must be no gaps in between the blades which would let the air escape if the pressure build up is higher.........well not much for an axial compressor , but it is pressure not velocity that is of prime value.

Carmel Pule' True! I studied aerospace engineering in university and did an internship in a turbo engine factory. To build up crazy amount of pressure at the High-pressure compressor zone, they even coated the inner tube with graphite to act as dry lubricant. Allowing the blade of the rotor to touch against the wall, forcing high pressurized air to enter combustion chamber. Also, there are stator blades in between each rotor blades. The stator blades have a aerodynamic cross section and are placed in a specific pitch. Thus, decreasing the velocity of the airflow to drastically increase pressure.

Ok smartasses, I just came here to buy a fan. Not a jetplane!
@drkastenbrot

The actual reasons go a lot deeper than that but this is a pretty good simplification. With a jet engine, all stages are designed to handle air at much higher density than helicopter blades. This is how they can get so much thrust in such a small form factor. To be able to "grip" that much air, a high disc load is required, lots of surface in contact with the air. Putting all that force onto fewer blades would stress the blades way more, limiting how fast you could run the turbine on top of lowering the efficiency. Sadly, its a mess or a lot of effects and factors playing into the final specifications, but the basic ideas are quite intuitive. With a helicopter, its mostly about efficiency. Look up disc load if youre interested. Distributing the weight of the helicopter onto fewer, larger blades has a big efficiency advantage, although some particularly heavy helicopters will end up needing more than two blades to support the weight. Its similar for drones.

Tao what ur professional opinion between the gray version and the Brown? the reason I ask the previous video the person tested the grey and there I bit loud the 1200 rpm ones, but he said the brown ones were better but the only difference I found so far is the price, lol grays are cheaper, I'm looking into buying a few but would like an opinion ty Tao
@TaoMStudio
@TaoMStudio 3 года назад
@Rom3 Hi, the grey one is indeed a bit louder when rpm goes higher due to the design. It is designed to move large amount the air. The brown one is designed for moving air in a confined space(high static pressure fan for that) due to the design. In my opinion, the brown one is better option overall for modern PC build due to people require better performance on air flow and acoustic. Hope this helps.

So as a case fans we should use Static Pressure fans for intake and High Airflow fans for the exhaust?
@jackarolax5770
@jackarolax5770 4 года назад
Airflow fans for the case and static pressure fans for the cooler or radiator.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Год назад
@@jackarolax5770 And in tight cases (like mini-itx), pull fan on CPU heatsink can actually be better than push. I saw a good 5c decrease on both CPU and GPU just by making a CPU fan into a pull instead of push (A noctua one just like in the video), which is also right up against a low pressure exhaust fan, which creates some kind of magic, probably because the CPU fan gets exhausted immediately rather than spreading out through the back of the fins after being pushed through, which also helps to pull air more evenly from the rest of the case, right through the heatsink. It might be warmer air going through the heatsink, but since the flow is straight to the exhaust (less than an inch away), it overall improves the airflow in the entire case. The extra space of not having a fan in push position in a tight case, also gives room for air to flow from other components.

Wow useful info! So for a psu mod I would choose an high airflow fan ?
@TaoMStudio
@TaoMStudio 5 лет назад
Hi, it also depends on your psu. I would go for a high efficiency psu, so fan won't spin until it reach certain load. You also want it to be quite so spin at low rpm. Please read the specs on the fan/s you are choosing. Hope this helps.
@themacfan
@themacfan 5 лет назад
@@TaoMStudio it's an 80 gold certified xfx psu . The reason for the mod is that the original fan started emitting some crackl sound like . So I was thinking maybe I could upgrade the psu with an quality fan . BTW the psu fan has only 3 wires .
@TaoMStudio
@TaoMStudio 5 лет назад
HI, there is no right and wrong answer here. For the balance of quiet and efficiency, I would go with low spinning fan. The 3 pins it has on the psu, I am assuming that the fan will be spinning constantly. (aka no pwm)

What if my exhaust is pointing at some obstruction (like a wall)? In that circumstance wouldn't a static pressure fan do better?

Or what if my exhaust is going through an expandable tube? The tube creates some resistance. Wouldn't a static pressure fan be more helpful there than and airflow being used to exhaust?

Even it blocked, you should keep using dynamic pressure fan as the more blades in static pressure fan is intended for "locking" air from reverse direction.
