Chris Godber talks about saxophone set ups, what makes the biggest difference? Mouthpiece, neck, the sax itself.
In this video Chris demonstrates 3 different high baffle alto mouthpieces to show that even similar mouthpieces have differences.
Mouthpiece 1 - Vigilante NY II
2 - Miami Dukoff D6
3 - JaryCustom Deep V (DV)

Man, I can't get over how much you sound almost like me on the alto! Thanks for sharing which alto mouthpiece Paul Taylor plays on. I thought he played with a Gaurdarla alto sax but it's a Vigilante which all this time from his debut album, I never knew or even heard of this company. Again, thanks!

yes for many years he did play a Guardala on alto. Jennifer Price (owner and maker of Vigilante Mouthpieces) used to work for Dave Guardala, she made the mouthpieces while Dave did about 30-45 mins worth of finishing work on them. Well after Guardala did his shady stuff and disappeared that left quite a hole in the mouthpiece community. About 8 years ago Paul Taylor talked Jennifer into making mouthpieces again and starting up her own business under a different name so as not to associate herself with Dave's dealings. She still makes each one by hand about 4 days worth of work for each piece and no two are exactly alike. Paul is playing one of hers now and has been for the last several years. Check them out at www.vigilantemouthpiece.com

The newer chinese mpcs are CNC, so they get the facing about perfect. The interior is left a bit rough, which doesnt interfere much with the sound quality.. and you can easily sand it down. I see some sellers now have that same bullet design with the larger opening in the table,

Hey Chris. Nice demo and talk. I am interested in Jazz and R&B. My YTS-200AD come with a start mouthpiece that makes it very low sounds like for school band. I watch people online playing Tenors and they all sound like an octave Higher. To the point that I was wondering if something is wrong with my sax. Now I understand they are not playing Altos necks in their Tenors (that is how they sound to my ears) but using a more high pitch mouthpiece. I have to ask, what should I do?

Hi Fernado, sorry it's taken so long to respond. I didn't see this until now. Hopefully you found your answer by now, but just in case.....when I was starting out I was confused about this a well. Different mouthpieces can shape your sound and make it brighter or darker (warmer) sounding....some of this is the material the mouthpiece is made of, but mostly it is the internal parts of the mouthpiece, for example the camber small, medium or large and the baffle or no baffle. The overall sound concept still comes from you, the player, but a mouthpiece can help open up your sound some and your creativity for playing, though it will not magically make you a better player. Some of the people you hear playing tenor may well be playing in the upper register or the altissimo range which is beyond the natural range of the horn and is a practice of overtones. Thanks for watching!

Do you know if you have any advice on what vintage saxophones i should look to buy, because im currently playing on a very classical sounding Yamaha, and im looking for a Sax that has just that ronchy jazzy sound... Any Ideas? Brands?
@ChrisGodbersax
@ChrisGodbersax 7 лет назад
The mouthpiece will make more of a difference than the saxophone itself. That's why I did this video series. Though the saxophone does play a role in the tone as some play warmer or brighter than others, it doesn't have as big of a change as your mouthpiece/ligature & reed set up. Are you playing alto or tenor? Try some brighter mouthpieces first, it will be much more affordable than changing your saxophone. There's a lot of bright high baffle mouthpieces, these are just a few that I'm showing here. Jody Jazz DV, Beechler, Dukoff, Theo Wanne to name a few. If you're playing alto also check out my other video reviewing the new Jody Jazz Super Jet Mouthpiece, it's very bright and may give you the sound you're looking for.

@ChrisGodbersax

Sure, everyone will hear something different. This video isn't really about which piece sounds better as I like them all for different reasons. The main focus is to show that aside from the player, the mouthpiece / reed set up makes a bigger difference than the sax itself (video 3 compares saxophones) The biggest take away is that the equipment will only take you so far, the rest comes from you, the player. But if you like the Dukoff piece, you should check out my newer video playing the Jody Jazz Super Jet! It replaced my Dukoff as I liked it a lot better and it's been my main mouthpiece lately as it does it all really well!

Sorry for the delay I wasn't getting notifications on this video, I play size 2 on legere signature for alto which is a 2.5 for most cane reeds.

Everybody says the same, but I have never seen any musician performing with a plastic mouthpiece...
@ChrisGodbersax
@ChrisGodbersax 4 года назад
yea plastic mouthpieces are the cheap ones that usually come with a horn. Hard rubber is a much more common alternative to metal, a lot of players play hard rubber. Vandoren makes some great affordable mouthpieces made of hard rubber, I covered one in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3oNvQRWyYvM.html

To bad vigilante charges $750.00 Ouch
@ChrisGodbersax
@ChrisGodbersax 7 лет назад
yea they're pricey. I supposed though if I spent 3-4 days making each one by hand I'd have to charge a lot too haha. The closest thing I've found to the tenor Vigilante is the Theo Wanne Shiva, but Theo charges $750 for those as well which is a bit much for a CNC piece, even as good as it is. Keep your eyes out on ebay as used ones pop up occasionally.

You should try a vintage Brilhart Level Air in around a .080-.085 tip. They are way off what size is stamped on them, so you almost have to have the seller measure it to know for sure. If you get a good one, they are absolutely incredible. A lot like the Dukoff, but not as bright, and slightly less buzzy.
@ChrisGodbersax
@ChrisGodbersax 7 лет назад
yea those are nice. I used to have one on tenor, very guardala like, but when I got my Vigilante it was no comparison. I have no idea what the tip opening was like you said I think they vary. Never tried one on alto, but I'm more of a tenor / soprano player so I haven't looked that hard. Will try to do a video of the Super Jet soon as I'm really liking that for the way I play. Once I get Dave to open up the JaryJazz DV though it'll probably dominate.
