High Class - I Revived This 440 Powered 1968 Imperial Crown Coupe, Then Buried It In A Field

I swear we used to actually restore cars. But a surprising amount of my time at Rocket Restorations lately has been spent reviving Tom's quality acquisitions. Case in point, this 1968 Imperial Crown Coupe. It's big, it's beautiful, it's extremely green... It's the 4500 Pound Pickle. It's got a 440 that appears to be very fresh, and the gas in the tank smells like it was refined in the last decade, so the chances for internal combustion, tire smoke and tomfoolery are high. You'd better grab yourself a gas station corndog and strap in, because we're about to throughly test this classic land yacht. ‪@rocketresto‬

When I was about 6 years old, Both of my parents bought new cars. My mom got a 1963 Plymouth sport fury III and my dad got a 1963 Imperial... I remember lying on the package shelf on road trips in the Imperial because my brother and 2 sisters took up most of the back seat... I really miss the Fury though, I'd love to find another one...

About that second but unused cutout for dual exhaust. For some reason the Imperial hardtops all only came with single exhaust, but all the convertibles came with duals which would explain the unused dual exhaust cutout on your car.

I've always, always wanted one of these. I tend to gravitate toward big Mopars, and think I had too much exposure to the TV show "The Green Hornet," and Dean Jeffries' customized 1966 Imperial, "Black Beauty," when I was a kid. Anyway... I found a listing for a '68 Imperial Crown four door. The man who originally owned it died. It had sat in his garage for around 15 years because he had become unable to drive it, and the family was selling it. The man's son told me all about the car and emailed photos. It was a time capsule! beautiful dark green metallic paint. beautiful interior. The right front fender was replaced because of a minor accident that happened well over 20 years ago but, other than that, no damage or rust or... anything. It was loaded with options (power vent windows, cruise control, the auto-temp control, power seats and powered everything else, etc.). Oh, did I mention it had under 70,000 miles on it, too? The man's son told me he would sell it for... get this... $4,500.00! I told him that I was off to the bank and I'd meet him at his dad's garage, but he said that wasn't possible and he wanted to meet after he finished work the following day, to which I agreed. Next day, late in the afternoon, the guy calls, apologizes, and tells me that his family had an estate sale and sold the Imperial that day before he got home without talking with him about it. I felt like I'd just been gut-punched and I was heart broken in a way that only others who share my affliction (haha) will understand. Oh well... there's always the one that got away, right?

I once was tasked with restoring a 65 880 convertible so got a 68 Imperial for the good 440. After I pulled it I put the word out the Imperial was up for grabs. Several guys showed up and were angry with me for ruining the Imperial. I said I didn't think it was worth much because it was a 4 door. I did not know there was a mopar cult. I traded it for road runner disk brakes for the 880.

Imperial's were actually ahead of Cadillac and even cost more than a Rolls Royce(more so the 66 and older). I believe by 67 they started to be more like a New Yorker but nonetheless..Cadillac has Imperial in it :) Hell,every car copies each other even today!! You could also get a version of that Imperial with a table at the back,like you wanted! Mobile Director option it was called.. They even had a button on the floor so you can switch the radio stations with your foot,like the high beams, Truly Awesome! I owned a few of these all ran great and were quick cars for being heavy..One 1968 Imperial was a 2 door it had factory 440(obviously) with factory duel exhaust and a factory duel snorkel air cleaner and sure grip..You know the woulda,shoulda,coulda type deal.Don't worry I have several nice old Mopar cars,don't lose sleep over me being sad I sold the 68 years ago that's what I do,buy/sell and keep some,I am fine! Oh well,my comment of the week..Take it as you want.. P.S , Love the Channel..

67/68 design came in right after Imperial's arguably most famous design, the 64/66 models. IMO, a failure, especially that rear look. Imperial was coming to it's separate lineup around 55, when there was also a big push by Ford to amp up their luxury class, which also failed. Imperial took over Packard's spot in the luxury class. I'm a little surprised how flat the floor is, not really Hudson step down when most of the industry really was.

Awesome c-body. Parts almost non-existent for critical components. Surprisingly many brake and suspension parts Imperial specific. Even finding a later model brake upgrade for front (to get rid of the HORRIFIC Budd system) are tough yo source. A semi-retired guy in Portland has a spindle using 70’s GM rotors/calipers. And the extra-scary hacked & welded cast iron “new” knuckles sold by some RU-vidr in the SE. Criminally irresponsible to sell those.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
Technically these aren’t even a C body because they are so different. I don’t remember which chassis code they used in ‘68. I’ve used a drum to disk conversion bracket on a 64 C body, and that worked ok.

@@mopartony7953 I have become enlightened. I was told "Y" for the unibody Imperials, but that is only the vin prefix, and it is indeed sitting on the C-body platform. I was thinking of the earlier "D-body" platform, and thinking that these kept their own designation, but they didn't.

Sorry dude, but if you’re seriously blaming the president and his administration for gas prices, you have no clue how the world works. I, on the other hand, can thank the state of Washington for their ridiculous $.50 per gallon tax, and I can also thank that particular station for marking their fuel up another $.30-.40 per gallon compared to the next closest stations because they can. What a treat to see two of these '68 Imperials. That convertible is rare -- one of 474 built, and it looks quite salvageable.

Wow, I hadn’t heard the production figure on that. Yes, it’s in quite good shape.

All passengers get their own hash burners - I think that button in the box with no gloves is to open the trunk

Love it! I was lucky enough to be the second owner of a 69 Imperial Le Baron Coupe, mine was loaded, but no Sure Grip either. An unusual car for a young guy in the muscle car era, but it was only about $1600 as I recall, I couldn’t say no, and I loved it.

I had one of these. Everything on it is heavy. The entire grill is diecast. The gas cap is 6 pounds. good luck removing the front bumper; all the bolt sare hidden. The hupcaps are 3 or 4 separate pieces with a heavy diecast ring. Look at the size of the quarterpanels. Giant 4 piston Budd calipers. 5 on 5" bolt pattern no other MOPAR car wheels fit. It is entirely unique aside from drivetrain. Why do I think that mine had a Holley on it? Nice feature, brings back memories, Thanks

Turns out the Holley is correct. The blue car has it. This must have been swapped from a different application, because it has the correct Chrysler throttle and choke connections. I’ll take the Carter, any day…

This guy and I scraped that car. Biggest automotive regret of my life.

Question! Who else paused at 5:51 to see if they can figure out what the prescription was in the ashtray 😊😊. Yeah me neither 🙄🙄
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
The prescription is a bunch of glass fuses - a common one for these old cars. 😁

@@DeadDodgeGarageI should have known LOL, although I use an old Sucrets lozenge tin I've had since I was a kid LOL, used to keep my joints in it back in another lifetime LMAO 😂.

I had a 68 2 door 300 fastback with more MOPAR addons than even the fanciest Imperial ever made. My 300 even had addons from the ultra Rare Crown Royale [a diplomatic purposes only] little known Chrysler product. And a one-off pair of prototype heads originally designed for Mario Andretti for NASCAR. I lost it [I presume] where one of my cousins was last storing it, and I have no idea what may have become of it. It came with all the actual documentation.

My brother bought one of those . Was a fine specime. We pulled the engine out. Threw it in a 70 super bee and made it to the track. Looking back. We used to throw small block Chevy engines in the imperial. Then derby them. A small block Chevy will run longer than any other engine without h2o. Just saying ; )

I really enjoyed this. I have a 1968 Imperial LeBaron 4 door sedan. Yep, they are special cars indeed. Keep up your great work here. Try not be too hard on her... 😏 Cheers from NSW Australia.

Great cars...I have two 66s: A Crown Convertible and a LeBaron. Demo Derby outlaws; you'll know why when you see the frames...looks like something that would hold up a railroad bridge.
