high E @ 2:19 !! Michael Spyres sings Polyeucte's Act III cabaletta "Oui, j'irai dans les temples", Mark Elder, conductor. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Opera Rara Chorus. 4 Nov 2014 Royal Festival Hall, London
Michael Spyres - Polyeucte
Joyce El-Khoury - Pauline
David Kempster - Sévère
Brindley Sherratt - Félix
Clive Bayley - Callisthènes
Wynne Evans - Néarque
Opera Rara Chorus
Les Martyrs (The Martyrs) is a four-act grand opera by Gaetano Donizetti set to a French libretto by Eugene Scribe. The libretto was based on one written by Salvadore Cammarano for an original Italian version known as Poliuto, which had been banned by the king of Naples for being "too sacred". Pierre Corneille's play Polyeucte written in 1641-42, the story of which reflected the life of the early Christian martyr Saint Polyeuctus, is the original source for both versions.
Donizetti became angry at the King's decision and, with a commission from the Paris Opéra due, he paid the penalty to the San Carlo for not producing an original work as a substitute, and left Naples for Paris arriving on 21 October.
As his first of two commissions for the Opéra, he proposed to revise Poliuto and, between 1839 and 1840, a French text was prepared by the noted French librettist and dramatist, Eugene Scribe, which conformed to the conventions of French grand opera but which incorporated 80% of the music from Poliuto. Revised to suit the taste of the Paris opera-going public and with the title changed to Les martyrs, the opera was presented on 10 April 1840.
When eventually given in Italy, Les Martyrs was initially presented in a translation from the French version under several titles including I martiri. It took until 30 November 1848, months after the composer's death, in order for Poliuto to finally appear at the San Carlo in its original Italian three-act version, the one which is most frequently performed today.
It is regarded by one writer as Donizetti's "most personal opera" with the music being "some of the finest Donizetti was to compose".

I doubt that this is falsetto... I think it is head full voice. In many other videos he clearly hit high e in full voice, so I presume that this is full voice too. Fact is that is really difficult in opera to keep the same resonance as long as you move to higher notes. In other musical genres, they can compensate making their voice "dirt", hoarse... in opera, notes must be clear, unless you want people booeing you. Whilst for rock audience, for example, if you scream you are a hero. Different contexts. If I were in those guys, I'd try to be distance from notes over the high D. That is the limit, where an opera singer has still an advantage on other professional from other genres.

luca sanfilippo, it takes a lot more strength and support and training to hit a “dirty” (I assume you mean either a belted vocal fry or a growl) E5 than to sing it clean, but i still get your point.

I agree that it didn't sound "falsetto" but simply voice placement and he could have taken it higher. Had it been "falsetto" the sound would have been softer/lighter/weaker. I don't know of any trained tenors that can't achieve sopranist tones with like or better quality. I just did it and I'm not trained but aware of voice placement and how to achieve. :)

This makes me think Ed Sheeran refers to all this by setting up the idiom "bad habits" - he probably wouldn't dare to. It's a heavy metal thing, heavy metal wants perseverance though. Yeah, those hittings the hard rock singers - only the strong survive - do it "habitura", and lose their voice in the middle of a stadion. The Weeknd did. Isn't The Weekend some baritone...

I agree with you BUT criticism in opera was always a major part of the opera world im sure you know that in the past singers were torn apart from the audience if they felt that the performance wasnt up to their standards and in some of the european houses they still do it some of the singers make the opera houses sign a agreement saying that they will stop or kick anyone out if they start booing or bashing them aloud during the performance, criticism was apart of the opera world ever since the monteverdi and vivaldi days pretty much since the dawn of opera...I don't agree with it but im not surprised when i see it done im kind of use to it already and if its being done in the opera houses i wouldn't be surprised to see it on the internet then again trying to sound smart and show off isn't anything new on the internet

As a veteran singer I feel saddened by the fact that this falsetto high E impressed so many. I was not impressed. I think Michael is a very gifted singer, with a fantastic instrument, but real high notes for tenor, above the high C, must have all the focus, intensity, brilliance and power of the high C...more in fact. And they should feel connected to the torso/chest. Gedda's famous high D's in Le Postillon de lonjumeau are a perfect example. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LVdOknrAZKY.html @5:53

@TheSandkastenverbot
@TheSandkastenverbot Год назад
@@davidwelch8288 Terms like Falsetto and Head voice are used very differently among different singers. Singing terminology is actually a huge mess, there's always a lot of guesswork involved. Some would call Spyro's high E head voice, others reinforced falsetto, yet others light mix. Anatomically speaking it was cricothyroid dominant. Be that as it may, Joshua was right in saying that this high E wasn't sung in the full voice that is usually used on such money notes and actually in maybe 80% of all opera.

@peterbernhard7415 Год назад
@@dylanjwebmusicYour last statement I find interesting, as I got my own thoughts on physiology. As I am editing this comments because you cared to reply to me , it occurs to me that there are, there do exist "cords" that anatomically do not connect to muscles, as they fix the joints, the knees for instance - which makes me wonder if the vocal cords connect to muscles... which is not even a beginner's question, as you voluntarily sing, and singing is steering the cords as you got muscles that connect to nerves thus to will. Unedited previous text wants to allude to the parallels of regular muscle training, working out, that seems to attain what in body building is sheer strength by applying crafty different ballet angles.... my own experience was that doing different angles ("ankles") might hurt in the beginning as the certain muscle fibers have never been involved in what had been routines to you (ballet is "ballare", but there is some Russian word "bol" that denotes the hurting, and balniza is the hospital) Now If you "just try" you might add more parts of a package and this might add to the sheer strength of it all without even heighten up specific muscle strains. A ballet dancer will not cope with a weightlifter but have astoundingly more strength than a regular guy with just the same diameter. Just to oppose the voice to the "rest" of the body: maybe you get "knots" like muscle packages if you get stuck in routines that are about sheer force that you in fact gained by versatility. So, the point with voice is that the force never suffices. Even Arnold is not a cumbersome inversatile sort of governor, as I now recall: Schwarzenegger was said "to have been" a wrench. Some low down is: strength of muscle and nervous versatility of "breaking" (what you know) both interact (which, as it occurs: new to me, sorry: that muscles gained would add to the brain, no singer would agree, "I think". With jogging, I'm sure it directly acts on emotions). Sorry for very bad English. I will edit once more, as soon as possible. I could hardly remember what I said but I understand it all the more so. This is not to forget about, the above. Thank you!

I don't care what register he was in for that high E. I enjoyed the energy behind it, and it felt buoyant and the vibrato wasn't bad, I personally found it surprising that he leapt the octave in the first place, the timbre change was really sudden Which I thought made the note thrilling. I felt like the sudden Timbre change for the high note did seem to almost add tension to the end, although someone else could say it sucked the tension from the ending and they wouldn't be wrong. It's perspective I guess.😀 Eh, anyways! Bravo Michael spyres!

Spyres has a stunning natural gift and a perfected technique where he can sing the bass, the baritone, the tenor, and the very high tenor. He mastered Rossini and particularly French singing but not limited to it (he sings in Russian and in other Slavic languages, as well). I liked his overall performance but not the high E. He switched from full chest directly to falcetto and back, which is in my take a bit disconnected... In below links you would see he can take Eb6 with chest voice. He could have attempted E6 without a false vocal. That would be majestic! This is still cool but he could have done better. He has such skill. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8WODsv0FFlg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gye97Un9h8k.html

That's mix, not falsetto, folks. Ain't no-one hitting an E in what everyone is calling 'full voice' without blood on the carpet and a tonsil in row C! It's also not true falsetto - look at the mouth shape and the energy involved. If you hit that note with that mouth shape and that energy, in falsetto, bad things would happen and the tone would be completely different. If other people think they know singers hitting it in full voice, it's that their mix sounds like full voice - please see Bon Jovi et al for reference. Same happens for female pop singers and the age old question of 'belt' - same range, same issues - if it's safe and impressive then it's mix, it just sounds like chest.

Hope you do, too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QIsJgmUfEBI.html

Ok folks.. Donizetti is a great composer, but he had some pretty f:ing hard strettas.. like one in Don Pasquale and so on. I've done Nemorinon and DP tvice so I have balls to say, that Michael S. here is doing extrodinary job by singing that very high and very hard and nobreathingtime scene that way. Good job indeed!!

there has been a high E sang, thats it. its bloody hard, and nicely done, no matter whether this was done "properly" or falsetto, but for sure not "disconnected"

That octave jump from high e to super high e - or whatever you can call it - was well done. There is no possibility of having more body in it since it is an attack. There is no preparation for the jump. I think he did very, very well....and avoided harming his vocal chords. He is a light tenor, no doubt about it with an excellent middle range too.

It sounds very French Grand Opera to me. It looks a bit disconcerting, but that's only because he's doing something virtuosic and unbelievable, despite the fact that musically it's a logical place for the voice to go.

The secret to how that note sounded was that the conductor used his baton to hit the singer between his legs, but unfortunately the videographer did not give the full picture.

Ich finde, Michael Spyres ist (deutlich) besser als viele Sänger, die in den Medien als "Startenöre" oder gar als "Opern-Weltstars" bezeichnet werden - ich denke da z.B. an einen gewissen José C.!!

Michael Spyres is a real thrill to see in person. I saw him at ENO last year in Benvenuto Cellini. He's not only a virtuoso singer with a very beautiful voice, he's a tremendous actor. Go see him if you can!

Opera is not just about the high notes folks. It's about the 300 hundred notes before that too, which he sang admirably. He could have dropped it down a few notches, and it would have been just as impressive and more elegant.

2:25 hit the note (not the road) which I consider an E5 sharp which suits me fine as I just came about explaining "why are there no black keys there and there" with natural barriers. Even a baritone, regular guy, could not possibly cross the E/F4 border line, unless he really feels harrassed, really "hair-razed". Bitte nicht berühren. Rühren does not seem to be some labour there. So this is heavy metal, it was foreshadowed by the "stelly" violins, the danes, to be or not to be. You must survive, hold on for a minute. Madonnas waiting "I'ma" (consider the B. Mars project in 23). This was great!
