I show how I replaced my old inefficient water heater with a new heat pump high efficiency water heater. My old water heater was about 14 years old and has never had any maintenance performed on it. I knew it was only a matter of time before it stopped working. In this how to install a hybrid water heater video I demonstrate how to drain and remove the old water heater and install the new one. I show the start to finish installation process. Only a few tools are needed including a crescent wrench, pliers, and perhaps a hacksaw. Piping will also be necessary to connect the heat pump water heater to your house water lines. In this case I use CPVC.
I wanted to install a water heater that used less electricity to save money and also be more conservative with energy for environmental consideration. I was leaning on a tankless system because I like the concept of not storing hot water and saving space. However after watching @MattRisinger video about the perks of hybrid water heaters I did some more research. The heat pump water heater was determined to be the best fit for our water heating application and I hope to explain why in more detail in an upcoming video. Stick around for that one and thanks.

@@MrKistel it did. And I've decided to run it on 100% heat pump mode. Our hot water shower usage varies so we don't need to have it in "energy saver" mode. This HP mode will save us a ton of $ by using heat from indoor dryer vent too.

How did it go?

What made you pick cPVC vs. Pex? I will need a drill a hole in my garage wall where the water heater is installed for a condensate line, how big does the condensate pipe need to be?

Thanks, getting ready to hook up same thing only 80 gallon. Surprised you didn’t hook up an expansion tank.

Cool, I bet you will like it. The expansion tank may be a requirement is some install applications however it was not in this case.

Thank you so much. No body shows how to attach the electrical cables.

It does make a air conditioner type sound but it is not obnoxious, especially in a garage.

to speed up draining - have you ever hooked a hose up to the cold water inlet (you can purchase a 3/4 pipe thread x hose thread adapter) to hook up your drain hose) and an air compressor set on about 30psi in the hot water outlet and you can drain most of the water out very quidkly..make sure you disconnect electricity first as the video shows....

interesting idea

Seems some compressed air back fed through the drain line might have freed up the clog.
@rogerpullin8997

To speed up draining, I always open drain before turning off water to the heater, get a good flow going while still under pressure, then turn off water and open TP valve, (what you referred to as purge valve). As far as HP water heater goes, I am concerned with noise level

I am thinking of getting Hybrid heat pump vs tankless. Can you let me know benefits over tankless, if you know.

I am planning on doing an update video describing the advantages I have observed over time. Stay tuned! In general seems to be more efficient energy consumption wise.

How would you install the condensation line on a heater in the back of my garage, on an inside wall? Also, great video!
@MrKistel
@MrKistel 2 года назад
Thanks, and ya it can be tricky finding a way to run the condensation line off the water heater if you are not close to an exterior wall. You could maybe run a long drainage pipe, at proper height with some downward pitch, along the inside wall towards and exterior wall.

@@MrKistel you could also install a condensate pump, then you can run the drain uphill. Theyre cheap too

I'm looking at going solar electric 110 volts since 220 volts is around 10 grand to start if you like me are on a limited budget this unit will not work unless you are able to stay connected to the grid in my case it's 180 dollars a month to stay connected to the grid so now I need to find out if any of these hybrid water heaters are able to run on 110 volts
@MrKistel
@MrKistel 2 года назад
I actually looked for a 120 volt unit as well in hopes to run off a small generator if ever need be. I couldn't find one. Most units come with heating elements and these require the 240volt. I wonder if there is a way to customize one and disable the heating elements and run the heat pump off 120 volts. Hmm??!!

@@MrKistel unfortunately the Rheem ones compressor is 220 I had already thought of that don't need electric heating elements also they could be changed to 110 volt elements or even 12 volt DC depending on your system elements can be found in voltage ranges from 12 volts so 48 volts DC so the elements are no problem it's the compressor that's the problem I have found one from Japan that has the compressor separate but although it only needs a 15 amp breaker I'm waiting to hear from them as to weather the compressor can be run on 110 since it a higher operating temperature it could also be used for heating as well

Hey . So there is 4 wires in the top ! 🤔 you didn't use the 2 small red and black ones ?
@MrKistel
@MrKistel 2 года назад
I think the small are intended for service if I recall correctly. in any case they are not part of the normal operation of the unit.

You have to do your research. Most videos dont have all the info you really need to know. A lot of money to waste on a water you might not be happy with.
@fortmcmurtry
@fortmcmurtry Год назад
Its called a pressure relief valve. You shouldn't be putting out how to videos unless you're a qualified plumber. Also there should be a condensate neutralizer on there
@mikeyazel8725
@mikeyazel8725 Год назад
You dont have to neutralize condensate from a heat pump only from combustion units.
@jeffzimnisky7073
@jeffzimnisky7073 Год назад
No neutralizer needed. Thats just water. Gas fired condensating equipment produces acidic water due to the byproducts of combustion. Everything else you said is correct.
