Is the gain maxed out on the Orange? I own the IRT120H and have always lusted after Orange amps but have been underwhelmed by the amount of gain on tap every time I play one, whereas the Laney has gain for days. Love the voicing on Orange amps too but imagine it would get lost in a live mix in a band with more than one guitar. Can see why they're so well suited to Doom 🤘
As much as I love the Orange (own a verb 100). The Laney sounded best for the riffs you wrote. Thanks for such a great channel. You are my go too when I need to hear what a certain amp sounds like.
yes, the Laney sounds better "alone", but the Orange cuts through the mix. I am the JCM 800 2203 guy, but the Orange is sexy. But i dont need more amps .. dont need more amps ... NO MORE AMPS ...
Well I have to say that I subscribed to this channel the day I saw your videos about that Laney amp. I have the 120w version and I love it. It’s hard to find good and recents videos about these Laney IronHeart, totally under rated amp. It would be great to see more videos of it. Regards
Is anyone here just straight up for the bad ass riffs and songwriting, I could play for a lifetime and not right riffs this bad ass this is such good content
I have owned the Laney for a bit over a year now. It took a little effort, at least for me, to get the tone I was looking for, but the tonal options are so wide ranging you can't go wrong with this amp. Throw an overdrive into the mix and that creates even more possibilities. Needless to say, I thought the Laney was more aggressive sounding to my ear. That would be my choice.
We won. Plain and simple. Although, I do think the Laney could have used a little more presence or highs. And a huge thank you for the blend at the end. A much fuller mix and sounded perfect for this riff.
As good as they both sound by themselves, together they make magic! Also i do think the Laney could've used a little bit top end to balance it's tone out.
The Laney for this one. it would be interesting to compose different style Djent to open chords like Deftones for you in depth of the Laney. Great work!
To my ears, the Laney sounded better. I wasn't a fan of the top end fizz of the Orange. I'm pleased about that because I bought the Laney head 2 days ago. Great video, as always. Great sounds, great riffs and tonnes of really useful info. 🤘😎🤘❤️
Really good demo! I've had the IRT60 a long time and was curious to see it compared with another amp, and it really does hold as well as I thought. One note that seems often overlooked: the Lead channel has some kind of integrated mid boost, so it sounds extra chunky while the Rhythm channel sounds a bit more open. This could also affect the perception a little (but sounds great in the context here).
I can never dial in a tone I like on the lead channel of my IRT-60. The rhythm channel seems to have more gain than I need anyway and sounds better for rhythm and lead work.
Got a IRT60 for a couple of months, let's say it wasn't exactly what I was looking for or wasn't what I was expecting from it, for that matter. I guess this video proves that sometimes we've got to experiment more with what we have before calling it quits. I truly like the Laney best in this comparison. My Laney still has something in it to give!!
Yeah man, definitely give it another shot. It has a lot of options to get the sound to your liking. I personally always use the built in boost for adding gain and I like to experiment with the push pull eq to find the right tone.
@@SonicDriveStudio Agreed! I fired the IRT up right after work and yeah, it's a great amp. My main gripe with my unit is the buzzing noises that I can't get rid of, like that 50Hz hum that's inevitable when playing single coils, but happens with and without any guitar plugged in (all my guitars have humbuckers and sound dead quiet with other amps). Maybe it needs a recap or more filtering in the power supply, I guess one day I might mod it with a choke too.
I also have an IRT 60, I found it weird to have crappy sound at home, and good sound in rehearsal. Find the sweet spot 😉 Mine is on the variwatt, I have to past noon. For that roll back the volume on each channel because it's loud as f**k If I don't it sound very fizzy, scooped… Increase the wattage and all the mids comes back, shines and the sound became very balanced.
Ive owned the Laney irt studio and own the irt60. Played both a lot live. My band mate used the Powerball. This was a perfect combination because of the different voicings. In in this time I liked more than the Engl. But this Laney is difficult to play for fast Tracking metal. It has a place in my heart
I guess amps and cabs/speakers are a lot like spices in the kitchen. You need to use the right flavours for the meal you're preparing. In this case, I liked the Laney more. Smoother sounding in its distortion and it fit the mix really well, but that's just a subjective preference. The amp blend sounded really cool and it seemed like the Rockerverb was able to add more hair and aggression to the mix, while the Laney gave a bit more clarity or articulation. These were a good set of amps to test against each other and pair up. As a band member and hobby recording and mix engineer, it's really great to learn from your videos and get a sense of different sounds, how they can work together, and getting to understand what an amp and cab give as their sonic personality. Thanks Jon.
I've tried using an Orange Rockerverb in a studio, and I own a Laney IRT Studio (Ironheart series). This video, to me, confirms my responses: The Laney is just more tight sounding, and it has loads more options (including re-amping!!) for finetuning, whereas the Orange sounded more flabby/spongy. Great for doom or sludge, but that's not my shtick 🤘😎🤘
The laney is shockingly good but the clear winner is both of them, panned hard left and right. Also those keyboard parts or whatever it is during the song sound freakin killer man!
The Laney cuts like a knife through the mix, while the orange delivers a big fuzzy chunk down low. It’s all personal preference but I love citrus 🍊. Both great amps!
I think them being in different cabs kind of isn’t doing justice in the comparison. I would love to hear both amps through one cab because I think the cab is coloring the differences in the amps big time
They both did excellently in the mix, but I think the Ironheart edges out and could do even better with very high gain, Metal-oriented works. That said, I’d be curious to see how an Ironheart 120 would perform against the Fireball 100 and the Diavlo RD100H for the seriously heavy stuff, including the very low tuned demonstrations of the 8/9 string variety where voicing and tightness also become important factors.
I own a Orange Rockerverb MKIII 100 and was genuinely a bit annoyed admitting to myself that the laney wins this by a long way. A head that costs less than my cab.. I just have to buy one!
That riff is insane sounding. I love it so much. Great video I enjoyed this and I liked the Laney more not only for its sounds but, for its looks as well and just the overall things you seem to be able to change on it. I don't own ether amps FYI. I was thinking of getting the Laney at one point but, I have been looking at many amps so its still all up in the air for me.
You should get one if you like clarity, it’s not a super saturated sound so it’s not quite like a 5150 and it’s not as “honky” sounding as a Marshall, so it’s definitely it’s own sound. So really unless you like stoner and doom tones you’ll like what it can do.
Laney is more focused and sits better in the track as you said. Orange is more open and would be better imo for more complex chords and ringing arpeggios (tonal mids sit lower). The real winner is the Laney left Orange Right. Aggressive, focused, tasty, and open - all at the same time. Love it! I appreciate these comparisons - nothing like coffee and great sounding amps in the morning.
Weird enough that I have the early version of the irt 60h, and the other guitarist for my band has a rockerverb 100. I personally love my Laney and haven’t really had much luck with the orange amps I’ve tried before. Not to bash on orange, but for the money there’s a lot better and more versatile options out there. I love my Laney
Wow ! Thank you very much for that awesome comparison. Personally I'll choose the Orange over the Laney... unfortunately for my wallet ! I found the Rockerverb have more complex midranges and yield more definite notes in the high pitch register. In my opinion , the Orange opens more sonic possibilities for different style . But both are good choice though.
That was great! I liked the Laney better but, I love the Orange's "thickness". They compliment each other well when combined!! Would be a killer set up for 2 players in same band to balance things out. I've played in bands where the 2 guitarists had WAY different tones and that is not so great. Lol Keep up the good work!
They both sound amazing but the Orange has a bit too much bloat in the low mids where the Ironheart has more of the cut I would want from a british flavored amp.
Wasn't expecting that battle. I use the Laney as a Djent machine for the chugs. But I always dial down the lows, which would have made these two sound closer in this comparison too. But yeah, this Amp is really flexible! Though I should add that the Rhythm Channel is just giving you the option to dial in another tone. It sounds the same as the Lead channel. Still really useful feature! More Amps should have this. And "setting the wattage" means that this thing has a built in attenuator. Don't know if you can use it without speaker though.
Very good Comparison for me because i always dreamed of an Orange amp but i still owne the Laney. But i always struggle to get a good sound in the Band Mix with a second guitarist. Most of the time i can`t hear my own Guitar :\ But here is see that it`s not a Problem of the Amp but for my plaiing and my settings on the Amp.
Laney hands down, not least of all because you can EQ it any way you could possibly want. Here specifically it had everything the Orange did plus none of the fizz hissy high mids. Also, the Ironheart has the same tube setup as most ENGL amps. Jus sayin
The laney sounds more aggressive, with a bit more lows and low mids. The Orange is definitely more focused on the middle and higher mids, classic orange tone. They’re both killer amps, and complement each other really well.
Ever so slightly, I like the Rockerverb better. The Laney is more aggressive, which I like, but the Orange sounds more controlled and concise, if any of that makes sense.
I'm biased, but the Laney wins. I owned the larger version of that amplifier for a while and loved it. Sold it for my Axe FX II, which I don't regret, but I do sorely miss the sound of a Laney sometimes. It has a less hi-fi sound than the Orange, but I feel like that adds a ton of character.
The Laney seemed a bit scooped and the Orange had more balls. But both sounded good. I’m not into these kinds of tones so perhaps I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Definitely, Laney fits better in context of the riffs. Orange gets in the way of the drums, while Laney sits in the mix better without loosing attack and aggression. Cheaper doesn't mean worse. But Mesa would be an even better fit... I know it ruins the point of the video)))
orange sounds like a proper tube amp, laney don't. I feel like laney is like a half assed british amp, most of their amp dont have distict sound like hiwatt, marshall, vox or orange
Old Laney amps definitely have their own sound. I agree that the Ironheart might be a blanket statement regarding modern high gain amps, but I can assure you nothing sounds like my GH100R, for better or worse 🤣🤣
