I'm 55 today, just a kid growing up in the 70's, completely oblivious of the economy. Looking back, I realize how hard it must have been for my parents to raise two young boys, paying a mortgage, driving around in a POS Ford Pinto, but we made it through as a family. We got through it back then, we'll get through this today. There's always hope, never give up! Thanks for posting and sharing solid information and advice, we're all going to need it.

Im 67 today and bought my house which I still live in now at 13.85% rate @ 30yrs. During the recession after I got out of college, I decided to go into the grocery business because I knew that people had to eat. It was tough to see a lot of my friends get laid off at the time, but I made it through. I, too put 2 kids in college and started to invest in the stock market in 1988. I fully retired 8 years ago and financially free.

The 40hrs work week was instituted in 1940 about 82 years ago, and things have only gotten more expensive despite increased technology, why? Because the very purpose of inflation is to keep people from gaining back their time due to increased productivity... Only the owners of industry benefit economically from technology, this is not an accident...

The only way to get rich is to own successful companies if you can't build as company. Research and buy shares in them wait 5. To 10 years. Sell and put the money into money generating REAL estate. Leveraged at no more than 50% this is a form of capital preservation. And let Inflation eat away at the principle of the loan whilst you can easily afford the interest only repayments, rinse repeat. If a war is about to break out in your country just flee and try your best to hold stuff like valuable art. Artifact maybe even rare metals. Because they will flatern the whole country money printing to Infinite and basically nothing will have value apart from basic essentials like food water clothes ect. That is the final boss of the great reset

It's not 9% it's close to 20%. Because of this misunderstanding alone, inflation cannot be corrected by the Fed raising rates. What is worse. The government will not allow them raise rates to needed levels to reign in inflation. The country would go into default, which in all actuality, is what needs to happen. We need to stop kicking this can down the road.

I lived through the 70's, married and had a son, and bought a house. At one point our adjustable morgage rate went up to 14.5%. However, I think it is much harder today because we are a different nation today. We had problems then and those same problems have grown until we not only have different morals but we are not an independent nation. As you said, today we do not have tools to deal with inflation. During that time we canned everything and bought powdered milk, sugar sweetener and bagged cereal. And it was tough finding a job, there was nothing! It was tough and families were not small. There were a lot of faces to feed compared to the 3 family size today. Todays deficit is so far out of reach I don’t know how they will ever get it down!

recession becomes a problem if your investment portfolio is badly damaged at the same time you are withdrawing funds to fund your life now or in retirement. Also problematic if it harms our kids or grandkids. not everything is as bad for everyone. some are smart, some are dumb and yea some are just unlucky. my dad left me an inheritance of around $1.5m. real estate and some other investments in the stock market have kept the money flowing , amassing around $120k every damn quarter, aside from my job as an engineer. not to be brash as i know everyone has their own different situations in life but it's also worth noting that a lot of people have poor money management skills and strategies

Hi Brian, great content and so true, but the main difference between back then and today is that the housing crisis in America is horrible now. I grew up in the 70s and became an adult in the 80s. I remember my parents complaining all the time about politicians and the economy, but we were middle class and we had one main credit card and two store credit cards which my parents paid off every month. I went to summer camp for 2-weeks every year through the Teamsters - that's history now. You could still find jobs at factories where you could earn a decent living, even if you needed a roommate, but not like now where even working people have more than half of their wages going to rent and buying a house is out of the question. Whereas people could stick with retail or factory work for the rest of their lives back then, you can't get that now because retail companies are smart, they won't let you work full time, they will barely give people 20 hours a week, which keeps them from having to pay any full time benefits, so people are forced to get multiple jobs, and that's the reason they're always hiring because they know people are always out looking for something better. The reason they get away with that is because they've trained other Americans to blame people who need to work retail by saying they're lazy and should have went to school for a better job when that isn't an option for many people because some have police records, mental and physical disabilities which keep them from earning a degree and they're not capable of doing anything but retail-type work, that's the best they can do. I was fortunate that I have nearly 40 years working in a law office, but I'm sort of the last of my kind, many law firm jobs have been dissolved, leaving very few staff to do things that were a luxury for attorneys back then. I can give you an entire earful of what it was like back then working in corporate versus now when I see companies posting jobs on Craiglist, looking for people to run an entire office and want to pay them $15/hr where I make more than triple that. All the employment agencies I used to deal with are gone, and the ones who are still around have none of the prestige they used to have. Their staff come and go just like retail workers. So, no, things are really really bad right now and even if they get inflation under control, the housing situation will only get worse and the middle class will be gone and it's just have or have nots, and the only way families can make it is by all living together and pooling their money just to have some type of quality of life. I'm seeing this already, it's just that Americans are so snobby, they'd rather have the opportunity to brag that they kicked their adult kids out of the house and make them live on their own, rather than stay together, pool your money and teach their children about saving and investing their money, which would put them in a better position for when we - the parents - leave this place. That's what I did with mine. I wish my parents had taught me about saving and finances more than they did, so I had to learn many hard lessons on my own over the years, so I spent a lot of time teaching my kids about making good choices when it comes to money and being responsible, keep good credit scores, etc. Many boomers like myself are in the position we're in because times were better, and we were able to benefit from opportunities that are no longer available right now, especially to the younger generations struggling right now. People are going to have to come a realization that if they're middle class and want to stay that way, they're going to have to change the way they've done things and have a paradigm shift about that.

Hi I like your post. My adult kids live with me. My reasoning for not having them leave is everything is bad out therr. There is no way id kick them out. Why? My housing costs will be the same if they are here or not. They are both very hard workers. They have an opportunity to save. As long as everyone handles their own business and maintains their space everyone has a better lifestyle than without each other. Friends and SOs are welcome to visit. Its more than a roommate situation but closer because we have each other.

Everything you said is 100% correct.🎯 I worked in homeless shelters & in subcontractor companies for social service. I can tell you we are having problems in a magnitude we didn’t have before. Parents don’t want to parent anymore & it was devastating to witness. You see a lot of drug addiction& alcoholism so much self indulge. It’s quite sad the government right now isn’t our friend & isn’t working for the good of the people. I hope this country goes back to God. There is a lack of unity & that’s why we are hurting & bad in every single way.

Well said, purchasing power was tremendous. Do you know you could buy nine times the amount of gas in 1975? Compared to 2022? That Nixon ruined everything stable. It would help if you went to get an education to make it these days.

Yes, market crashes. Yes it has not bottomed, It has no business at this level in the first place, pumped up by the Fed and central banks around the world. You can still be 100% invested at this level. Good luck! I prefer to sell the bounce and keep 50% cash. I will not get back into the market more than 50% if S&P is not 30% lower from here. I trade and make quick profits. With this inflation and my expectation on the economy, I am ok with 70% cash. I don’t short the market. Just keep selling the bounce!

I am sitting on cash. I sold my stocks but the best part about this sell-off i have been mostly right, the worst part about it is that i don’t short anymore so I’m not making so much money but at least i will get to buy twice the stock with the same USD amount.

Yes and no. A CEO has a job of leading the company towards profit. It doesn’t mean he or she is able to do every employee job.
@mrz6480
@mrz6480 2 года назад
@@taoist32 I believe a ceo needs to know how to do the work before he can lead. That is a problem with corporate AMERICA these people went to college but never did the work in my opinion they also need to look at there business as a customer to be able to fix problems thanks for your reply I do respect other opinions
@taoist32
@taoist32 2 года назад
@@mrz6480 I’m glad you keep an open mind. The thing is, CEO’s don’t even need to start at the bottom. A public corporation can hire one from outside of the company. It would take far too long if every CEO had to start at the bottom. That kills efficiency. As for corporate profits above people, it depends on the company. All the big corporations do treat their employees like shit because they can always hire more. They don’t suffer any consequences. If there was a way to keep every top level executive responsible, honest, and loyal there would not be any big corporations. Just like in a real free market, corporations should be held liable for every injustice act they do. Unfortunately, you get these CEO’s and board members that use shortcuts and loopholes because, as you say, they are greedy. They know they will suffer no to minimal negative consequences.
