Agreed. Most are worried on what they will be able to see when they pixel peep even though in reality, the photos one does are not really printed so big that the noise will be a problem. The same way they always argue which camera / lens is better VS capturing the moment and the technique behind it.

@@robinwong I’d even shot 6400 ISO on a Canon G7x, and at 1”, the sensor size is even smaller than M4/3. Converted to Black and White, it looks rather similar to shooting Ilford Delta 3200. 12800 ISO on it is highly intrusive though, even in Black and White.

Some of the most iconic photographs in the history of art have tones of noise and I don' t think that was a problem in any way. The digital era in photography is indisputably wonderful but it has made us watch the photographs through an enormous magnifying glass. Photographs are not meant to be watched like this but in a appropriate distance. So Robin I agree, those who suggest we should change gear and system, screw them!

Hi Robin, I like your emphasis on the silent shutter mode. I was also doing a photoshoot for a function being broadcast live over RU-vid in Dec 2020 just before total lockdown and under very low light with my OMD EM10 Mk2. I was on silent shutter mode and ISO 6400 (sorry no flash allowed!). I was very impressed by the IQ even on such high ISO. FYI I am a Nikon shooter but under such a condition I had to use the Olympus. I totally agree with you that even for the Mk2 which I got in Feb 2020 (now Mk 4 already eh), it is still a fantastic and feature-packed camera. Good presentation Robin.

It always confuses me to hear someone talk about how bad M43 is, and at the same time, talk about how good smartphones are. M43 sensors are about 8 times bigger than smartphone sensors. Something I noticed in more than one comparison with the Sony A7S cameras is that they apply HEAVY noise reduction in-camera, so their reputation may be attributed more to software than actual hardware. These days, there are so many options to remove noise in post-processing, anyone can produce reasonably clean images from any camera.
@robinwong
@robinwong 3 года назад
yeah I heard that the A7S "eats stars". That is bad!
@ToolCraze
@ToolCraze 3 года назад
I agree, stupid reasoning. People always can m43 a "small" sensor format yet are ok or go beyond and praise cell phone cameras. The truth is that m43 is a large sensor compared to smartphone cameras. People should instead call m43 the smallest of the large sensors.

I shot film for many years, and just about any print had grain (noise), which was not ever an issue. When I decided to go digital, I looked at several different camera reviews online and your review of the OMD EM5 MKII clinched it for me. I bought it in 2016 and have had zero regrets. It is my primary camera, I will use my old E-600 now and again. Also, my old E-600 produces phenomenal images as well. It has been said that it isn't the camera that makes a good photograph, but rather the person depressing the shutter. My first, and only, film camera was, and still is, the OM1 and I have shot only with Olympus since 1984. I have tried other cameras, both film and digital, but I have always preferred Olympus, I just feels right in my hand.

Hey Robin, how is it going there? Your shots are top notch! I agree with everything in this video. The story trumps noise all the time. When I was in my first years in digital photography, I was told by a couple of professionals that one of the the biggest differences between amateurs and professionals is that professionals do not fear using high ISO because they would rather have a sharp grainy image than a smooth and blurred one. I know a lot of small format users who tend to stay at ISO 800 max. One of them sort of missed to get a sharp image of his baby's first walk because the room was really dark, he stayed at ISO 800 and the shutter speed was really low, giving him adequate camera shake to blur the shot. Others miss their shots because, well, they leave their heavy cameras in their bags. I also do lot of low-light, high ISO shots on my GM5, which doesn't have IBIS. Oftentimes, during my midnight walk, I would encounter nocturnal animals and capture them at 20,000 ISO. Distant and weak light sources are OK with me, as long as I can see the target (subject) in my EVF, and get a lock. It's such an experience, actually. Cheers.

Hey Robin, nice shots. Wow must have been very dark for ISO's that high with 1.8 apertures and slowish shutter speeds. I've taken my m43 cameras to events like the midieval times dinner theater where they are very dark but I can still shoot with f2.8 zooms at f2.8 and high shutter speeds of 1/500th or faster and still be around 3200-6400 ISO. Great job Robin! Thanks for assuring people that m43 is more than capable than what the skeptics say.

Loved the "screw you" comment. Made me laugh out loud! I often think "it sucks to be you" when watching users of non Olympus systems trying to protect their cameras from wet weather. In wild weather at the seaside with salt spray, I see others spending so much time trying to keep their lens front glass clean. I just carry a bottle of water and give it a quick bath...cleaning is done in an instant! Every system has different features and each user values different attributes. For me, the Olympus system best fits my needs. For others, it doesn't. Whatever works for you is totally cool!

Robin, you totally nailed it. I agree with you on all the points you make! I might add the OM-D Series 10 is a perfect example of clever understatement. You can take it anywhere and get great pictures from places where a big SLR would get you unwanted attention. Nobody would suspect you are going to take seriously good pictures with it. Now that I got a used EM1 II I use it less frequently, but the EM 10 II will always accompany me when I travel light. And I use it as a second body for livestreaming.

I short a lot of available light in the early 60s around the NY art world with Tri X in a Nikon F. You had me grinning from ear to ear when you told the story of not being believed that you could shoot silently using the electronic shutter. I can still hear my Nikon’s shutter and mirror noise as I held my breath like a target rifleman at 1/15th knowing I was disturbing a poetry reading in a silent space. I worked with my limitations then in exactly same way You did in this shoot and you juggled the parameters and the priorities beautifully. I completely agree with your choice of the 75 and 45 mm lenses because I own them and use them regularly.I don’t have the 25, so I don’t have a feel for it, but the specs fit the situation beautifully. You give an accurate account of the trade-offs real photographers face all the time. Like recognising the need for sharp shots of the drummer and guitar player and using whatever shutter speed was necessary and accepting the resultant noise. Thanks

@mikechan31

Well said Mr Robin, I agree that the moment captured is much more important than just technical aspect of a photograph. Olympus used to have a slogan under their brand logo: Capture your stories! I have been a MFT shooter for few years but have been recently bought myself a used Sony A7II for precious landscapes photography & some shallow DOF moments. But I still kept my very old & yet trusty workhorse the Lumix GF1 with its low profile pancake lens Lumix 20mm Mk2 when I am not consider bringing the much bulky & generally expensive FF gears for general outings with friends and family. The GF1 is still capable of producing images (I shoot only in Raw & edit in LR) that is much more sharper & pleasing than using any of the latest smartphone cameras. The inconspicuous & lightweight setup is a bliss to carry & hold than any of my A7II setup. Of course, the newer EM10 series is just a personal taste of choice than my obsolete GF1 but what matters is the final image result I gotten with it. Like what you’ve mentioned in the video, did I care about the noise? No. Even if the noise is really messing up the colors I could always resort to convert them into pleasing B&W images with natural film like grain that is satisfying. With careful post production in LR, my friends couldn’t even tell any difference if those images are taken from pro FF cameras viewing from their smartphone & desktop facebook anyway! I bet most newbies don’t even know what sensor size is about and compare MFT sensor which is about a quarter size of FF sensor but yet still about 8-10 times larger from smartphone camera crowds, the result of MFT is able to produce speak for itself. Of course, to bash MFT or FF or each of the system does not make any sense. We are blessed with so many choices nowadays and from my general perspective MFT is a great street/general outings/ travel photography tool & for pros the ultimate lightweight handholdable telephoto zooms like 100-400 & 300 f4 Pro that non of the FF system can do. In the other hands, one should utilise FF’s higher dynamic range in landscape photography as well as the flexibility to offer more DOF control in portraiture photography.
@marc2670

Yeah, fully confirm, I don’t care high ISO at all. However, my small toddler is often moving fast and unexpected, that I needed to set my min. shutter speed to 1/160 in order to avoid too much motion blur. But therefore the IBIS is useless and my 12-40 2.8 slightly too slow in the night. I often end up with 25600 ISO. But it is ok, I can live with it. Still much better than a smartphone and the Olympus still has a super fast AF where I really can catch the moment. What I am wondering about RU-vid is that there are so many great videos about cameras, and you are one of the best, but nobody ever really tested camera on toddlers and small children. Since I became father I have found out, that this is actually a really great challenge for cameras. Maybe this could be once a topic for your vlog. I would definitely appreciate it.

Few weeks ago I was shooting a softball game at night. I had to use 8000 ISO on my E-M1 (mark 1). So that's not even the best m4/3 sensor, the camera is 8 years old now. I put the images through DXO PureRAW and I couldn't believe how clean they looked. You could only see noise at 100% magnification. And even then the noise wasn't bad. Point I am making is, m4/3 has been reached the sufficiency point for the past decade at least. Yes, FF will give you less noise, but as someone who's shot FF, I still prefer m4/3 because of all the other advantages it provides.

I currently shoot with a Fuji X-T2 but your principle still applies when I hear all of the rants about how you need to shoot with "full frame" because of the better low light performance. I didn't pick this camera based on sensor size but on the overall shooting experience. ISO 12800 shots with M4/3 or APSC cameras look perfectly fine to me and as a matter of fact I will often even add some grain either in camera or when post processing in order to give a more film like look. I almost always use auto-ISO with a limit set at 12800 and then I set my shutter speed and aperture to based on the situation. I have yet to get a shot that was unusable due to noise. I think the people that worry about that stuff really need to quit pixel peeping.

I watched this video on my 70" Sony TV and the images look fantastic! No obvious noise at all. Did you apply any noise reduction in post, Robin? And what's your default Noise Filter setting--Low or Standard? Also, the advanced noise reduction available nowadays is the great equalizer. Currently I have a 10 year old Nikon D7000, and your EM-1 ISO10000 photos look better then mine at ISO400 xD So a M43 would also be a significant upgrade in that aspect despite a smaller sensor, if I can't afford a, say, Nikon Z5. It's very similarly priced to the Em-1. The IBIS and colors are just so attractive on the Olly, "toneh" be damned. Keep smiling, greetings from far away in Serbia!

Thanks for the video Robin. As I've - fully scared of high ISO - fixed it to 200 on my Olympus cameras I will give it a try. Up to now I rather used a shutter speed of 1-2s handheld, which is not an issue with wider lenses, than actually increasing ISO. Hope to see you soon back being an Olympus Ambassador.

Thank you for this great video. I'm very amazed of the ISO capabilities of Olympus. I used a Sony a6400 with electronic shutter before at a street parade and I didn't know that it will create this kind of flicker (black horizontal stripes) across the pictures. It is just a hobby for me, so I don't know many technical details. Seeing these really crisp pictures (even with youtube compression), I wonder if it had to do with the lightning or the capabilities of the Olympus camera compared to the Sony one. Apologies if it is an amateurish question. Thanks again and best wishes from Japan :)

Hello Robin, very nice shots ! I totally agree with you : capturing the moment is the thing, it's much more important than having a noise free image. However, I can't help seeing that some images were taken at ISO8000 45mm f1.8, with the 45mm f1.2 lens, they should be taken at ISO4000 ... of course the problem is that f1.2 lenses are very expensive and buying the three of them is out of reach of most of us ... another point is that there are over there very good pieces of software which arte doing a great job on noise, I'm speaking of DxO Photolab 3 (DeepPrime feature) and Topaz DenoiseAI. Seeing the shot at a 4K resolution, I'm not sure you used one or the other on your shots. Did you ?
@robinwong

Of course, if you can afford the F1.2 lenses, you get more advantage. I did shoot a lot of my images with the 25mm F1.2 (not shown in video). I post-processed the images with Capture One Pro, with noise reduction left to default settings untouched. I adjusted contrast, white balance and exposure, mostly.

Another informative video - thank you. I'm pleased to have discovered your site earlier this year. Today's topic provided me food for thought in weighing the Pentax K-70 vs. KP as the replacement for my venerable K20D, none of which are micro four thirds, of course, but in light of your comments about silent shutters and higher ISOs, I lean toward the KP. I use Topaz Labs DeNoise 6.1 in post-processing, but your sample images are clearly superior even with the smaller sensor vs APS-C. Bonne journée from sunny -13 C Canada.

This is my second time watching this video. The first time I watched it was on a 55-inch TV. If I paused the video and looked close I noticed some noise. Here's the crazy thing. When I look at printed photos, I don't get close and use a magnifying glass to see if I can find problems; I just enjoy the photo as a whole. I know, I'm nuts. Some of the most brilliant photos that I've seen, blown up to about 3 feet by 2 feet, were taken on a 16 MP Canon. I don't think these pixel peepers love photography. They love tech, and photography is an afterthought. There's nothing wrong with that (though, I don't quite understand it) until they start dogging on photos because of noise. Some of the most famous photos in the world are noisy. I say just enjoy them for what they are: a moment, frozen in time, that someone captured because it made them feel something. If this isn't something you agree with, that's all right. You do you.

That's very similar to the kit and type of work I mostly do - providing campaign stills on a live set. M43 is perfect for that - reaching round equipment, silently taking shots one-handed using the FAS and relying on IBIS. Haven't been forced to use as high ISO as you, but 800-2000 is common, and have had no struggle getting images signed off from some huge clients.

Also maybe worth mentioning: silent shutter in artificial light situations CAN cause banding issues. Not always, it depends on the light sources. But it is something worth considering and a reason why you might not always want to shoot with an electronic shutter.

I think that sometimes this discussion topic comes from people sitting in Lightroom doing 400% zooms. Yes, there might be a point about detail preservation at really high ISO, but even then clients are fine as long as the composition and the exposure in general is spot on. I would much rather highlight the discussion about auto focus systems for low light, does the phase detect system (E-M5 mark III, E-M1 Mk II and up) offer a substantial improvement over contrast detection for doing stills in these conditions?
@robinwong
@robinwong 3 года назад
Hey Sune, Thanks! You are right, zooming in magnified view is counter-productive in real life shooting! In terms of AF, the phase detect will help more if you use C-AF, which I did not. I used S-AF for all my shots. While there was movement, the swaying, head ganging, etc, they were not like sports or birds flying, so singe-AF is more than enough to get the job done. I can tell from experience, AF can do a great job in low light even if you use the older E-M1, and the other OM-D cameras like E-M10, or E-M5 (older than Mark III).

Excellent low light shots and a great video! I'm curious about two things. First, in a situation like that do you spot meter, or use regular metering? Second, do you keep the histogram visible in the EVF, or do you just eyeball it as you're adjusting ISO?

Thanks for the kind words. I always work with evaluative/pattern metering, and I don't trust the histogram, they don't give me anything helpful when I need to shoot things quickly. I trust the "What You See Is What You Get" live exposure simulation.

High ISO with MFT isn’t such an issue now with software such as DxO PureRAW. I have a shot taken at a low light music venue with a Canon 550D (APS-C) that was shot at ISO 3200. Due to a sudden light change, it was two stops underexposed. I managed to rescue it with some judicious RAW editing, but it was very noisy. I recently tried DxO PureRAW using that image as the test one. The results were so impressive I immediately bought the software. I shoot music gigs with a full frame with fast primes at the moment because of the low light (usually 3200, but sometimes higher), but with PureRAW it now seems more plausible to use smaller, lighter MFT cameras and save my aging back and neck muscles.

Hi, I've seen your channel and I love it. I'm not an Olympus user, I have a Nikon 7500, but in the last few months I've researched about other brands. Olympus catches my eye a lot, but it stops me from the size of the sensor, well, like everybody else. I liked this video because it gets very close to what I do, I take pictures in theaters, because I am a photographer of a Symphony Orchestra in Mexico. Almost always the shots I make are with 1600 ISO with an 85mm 1.8 or 3200 ISO with an 80-200 2.8. Do you think an Olympus 10 MK II or 5MK II can perform well with those parameters?

Hi Robin. Great video clip as always. I was in the music business for 24 years !!! Absolutely agree with you regarding shooting in low light conditions using high ISO. Not a problem. The only issue which occurs using high ISO is when I shoot with telephoto lens - 300mm pro - for wildlife birds and need to crop in significantly. Best I can do right now in cloudy low light UK is using max ISO 2000, shutter speed around 1/2000 sec and aperture f5.6. Workspace is great to significantly improve image and then “polish” using Topaz De-Noise / Sharpening. So shooting with 45mm lens at very high ISO and for me a slooooow shutter speed is not a problem!!!! Take care and stay safe. Hope to see you again soon on Rob Treks chat show.

I think you nailed the problem I encountered. I took an owl photo in the evening at 300mm, f/5.6, 1/125 second, and ISO 12800. I had to crop substantially, and apply DXO noise reduction. The picture looks OK in Flickr, unless you zoom in on it. Then it looks very pixelated - flic.kr/p/2kqEjBr . After that experience, I'm limiting my auto ISO to not go over 6400, for wildlife photography.

Regarding high ISO... I took M5 Mark III for a testing session with new lens. A friend of mine took the camera and started to take photos, and only after that i realized that i let camera on manual mode. ISO was 3200, it was inside, only few lightbulbs, while aperture was fully open. Photos were like -1,7EV lower than balanced, but checking upon Highlights/shadow revealed that there were little to no underexposed zones. The noise is defnitely on the photos, but it actually looks very natural - like film grain. Regarding silent photography with Olympus - you can configure C1 to be M mode with silent shutter, disabled flash, disabled illumination and beeps. This way it will act as predefined quick "Silent mode". You would not just make no sound, but you would not disturb performers with lights which the camera may accidentally emit. When it comes to lenses, Olympus 12-40 PRO makes a noticeable "whoosh" sound when zooming, also lens makes a "click" when you engage clutch mechanism or hit end of the rotation. Those are issues only in videography or in situations like live recording. Prime lenses are in this scenario good choice - no clutch mechanism which can be switched by accident, and focus rings don't have border. There is one last thing i learned about silent shooting - disable Flicker Reduction. Some lenses may produce "rattle" sound with the aperture blades, when flicker reduction is on. So far i noticed this only on Olympus 75mm F1.8 and Leica DG 25mm F1.4.
