I have 10'3" garage ceilings but my garage doors are 7'. I want to get a garage lift so I'm creating overhead room and the ability to open my garage door with a car on the lift!!! All i needed was 9' door cables, a couple pieces of 2 x 4's and a handful of 3" lag bolts. Not a bad little job to do in a couple of days.

I'm Really glad you posted this video. I've had 2 door garage door companies tell me "it can't be done" without changing the angle of the arch brackets (to 32 degrees) and installing larger spools for the cables. Thank You !

Yep!!! I was told the same thing and told that it was dangerous to do on my own! They "Highly Suggested" I let a professional (Them) do it. I'm not saying that I couldn't have screwed it up!! I was a little nervous doing it, I just figured if it didn't work then I'd call them and pay them to bail me out! Haa! I'm glad it helps. It's definitely doable with 2X4's to create the arch angle! All I did was buy the 9' cables and used my stock spools! Thanks for the shout out!

You WONT need larger spools (drums) because the door is still only moving from the bottom edge that seals against the floor the standard 7 or 8 foot to clear the Lintel at the top

@@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes I agree. My thinking exactly! 👍

Is your door still working good ? How close to ceiling is your door ? Thanks for making the video very informative

Morning!! Door is still working great! I still can't get used to that little rattle / shake thing the opener does when closing to be sure the cable is tight but it's really quiet after that. I think I'm about 1'3" off of the ceiling. I added 2' of track and ordered 9'cables versus my stock 7' ones. I'm glad you found it informative. Thanks for the comment. 😁

You can mount your standard opener to the side for 1-car garage door. But I see you already did a jackshaft opener. The issue I see with a jackshaft opener is if the garage door has any issues they just fail miserably. At least with the opener you had if door gets jacked up the top panel can't get free of the lift arm. Curious why you didn't try to get closer to the ceiling while you were at it? I have an older 12k 4-post bolt in style AMMCO lift I just finished installing kind of like you did, one bite at a time. I already have 8' tall 2-car garage door but want to get it closer to my 10' ceiling and this inspired me to just do it. I use my lift as a mezzanine for tools on wheels (welder, table saw, extra storage, etc.) to park an SUV under it. I bought mine for working on cars rather than car storage. Both platforms can be moved since it is a chain style lift versus the modern cable style. I was fixated on a 2 post for so long, a 4-post is so much more useful and I'm glad I did it, money well spent.

Thanks for the comments and information. I thought about moving my opener but my kid needed a standard opener so i figure d" WTH! Haa! I've seen a lot of info on the wall mount openers so I figured I'd give it a shot. My only issue is that the wall mount openers don't really push the door closed so I had to play with the spring tension quite a bit. On the lift subject I have been on the fence for years about buying a lift and was, like you, fixated on a two post but decided to go with a four post for moveability. I have 7' doors but 10'3" ceilings. Wow, what brand lift do you have? Chain lift? I bought a Challenger. It was just about the only lift with short enough columns to move it out of my garage if i need to and don't need any more lift with 10' ceilings.

It's an Ammco model B4120-SN thats 16' L x 11.5'W (similar to FP14KA), previous owner bought it from the shop without the fancy Bridge jacks that don't bother me a bit not having. My plan is to use air bag jack if I need to jack up a vehicle off the runners. The only thing I would do differently now if money not an issue is buy a portable unit like you except I like the Advantage/Wildfire style with posts. After having and using the style I have I got so lucky I measured and placed it perfectly for my needs. You really need to watch that nothing goes haywire with the door and makes slack in those cables that goes undetected by the jackshaft style lift. Glad you got it figured out. Marketing really needs to stop touting them as being so superior, they really leave a lot to chance where the other style is tried and true reliability with safety measures not matched by jackshaft.

@@thereplacementfordisplacement cool on your lift... And yes on the opener. I watch it carefully to be sure the cable is tight. Genie does a weird little jerking thing when closing so the opener can tell if the cable is tight. Kind of funky but I'm getting used to it. Haa!! Thanks for the note. Have a great one.

Haa!! on the jerking motion!! Still not used to it yet but totally normal. Also I didnt put those cable spring tensioner things on the bottom of the door. Seems to work fine without them. Thanks for the note.

Planning on doing the same, been getting quotes and they’re $1600-$2000 minus the opener. They’re telling me I need all these parts but I can’t wrap my head around that. Essentially we’re just moving it up 24”! Common sense would be to simply add a 24” pice of track and move everything up. 🤦‍♂️

Yep! That's all I did! Got 9' cables and a 2' piece of track and bought the opener on Amazon for about $300

Crap! it was over $400. The one i got shows $479 on Amazon

You just have to space it off of the wall so the door won't drag on the wall as it's opening. That's what the 2X4's are for.

Put a jackshaft opener on it or else the door will be screwed with a residential ceiling unit.

You are correct. I put a wall mount / jackshaft opener on it. So far, so good... Thanks for the note.
