High Mileage Family Car Skoda Superb Gets New Life 

Theres something very satisfying about working on your own car and trying to keep it on the road for as long as possible

Do this complete overhaul, plus an engine rebuild, drive your car for half million kilometers, and THAT'S the way for being environmentally responsible, not being FORCED to dump your car after few years, to buy some new electric scam!

Outstanding work. Also want to say thank you for such a clear and easy to watch video. No annoying jump cuts, no thumping music where it's not needed, clear and straight to the point. This is going to be a huge help for when I have to do the same for my Dads Octavia as it's rear sub frame is just rusting out.

Great stuff. I bought a 2001 Passat TDi 130 about 8 years ago for £160. Fitted a cheap but branded control arm kit, a head gasket, tidied up the subframe and axle and it's just passed 500k miles last year. The found a black 2005 Passat TDi 130 Highline for £250. Had only 130k miles but was very tatty but thankfully no dents. New set of brake calipers, discs and pads, engine mounts, 2 new wings and a few other minor jobs. Total cost £650 including purchase price. Spent a week detailing it and it's an extremely nice car now. There are some bargains to be had out there if you can do your own work

Hey! Nice video really. Just a small advice. Never put any grease on ATE dry guide pins. They are meant to be dry. The force of rubber actually pulls brake pads sligtly from calliper when the brake is not used. With the grease on the guide pin this doesn't work and brake pads will always touch brake rotor which eventually results in overheating of rotors and vibrations during braking. 90% of mechanics make this mistake. Also use only genuine ATE rubber part of guide pins. The correct compound of rubber and grooves inside are essential to proper function.

I got a 2016 Skoda Octavia Scout with 190.000km/118.000miles on the clocks. My plan is to own it as long as possible(especially because there's no loan on it), and thankfully I live in an area where they do not salt the roads which is a big relief for me personally because I hate rust lol. Lots of snow, but no salt. Just had it in for an MOT and it cleared with no remarks, and just had regular service so all is well. The only thing I'd like to do is change all door/window seals because they squeak so much, especially during winter. Also the interior is making too much noise almost like someone placed styrofoam in between the dash just to be an utter devil 😏 Then you got things like moisture entering the rear view camera, blinkers in the mirrors as well as headlights. Still a good car, but nothing lasts forever so just got to try to stay on top of things.

Satisfying process, but painful to watch everything being assembled without a gram of grease or anti-seize, the next mechanic to work on this car will be swearing in Polish a lot....

Did the same thing to my Pontiac G6, replaced almost everything for the sake of keeping it on the road. I didn’t go as far as you did with wheel bearings, and every bushing, I didn’t get to the front subframe bushings (rear subframe didn’t have bushings). I did it by hand though, I don’t have any air tools

Superbs are just superb cars. Whether or not it did need all that work done to it or not, it's a good investment to a car that is reliable.

I own the same car and have also done some of that work. Here in Portugal we don't have the rust problem, mine's body it's 100% new. Mine it's a silver gray 2010, Skoda Superb Elegance Estate with the 6 speed manual transmission and the CBBB engine (2.0TDI - 125Kw) and 270.000Kms on the clock

I love this video, amazing effort Martin! I wish I had a place to wrench myself. Maybe one day. By the way, I have one tip. At 25:05, you can spray linseed oil inside all of the holes. The oil will stay stick to the inside for a long time and prevent from eventual rust forming.

I didnt know 240K miles is considered high mileage for cars. My car is at 300k and not missing a beat right now, and its a smaller older Skoda. That being said good on you for keeping this car going!

Put the jack stands on pieces of plywood 20mm or thicker to aid stability! Especially on pebbles as to not sink down or become unstable.

I can say that Hammerite Kurust also works against the rust, just remove any rust flakes, brush Kurust on it and put coat of paint on surface

Really nice job. However, I would advise you to get a few pieces of plywood and place them under your floor jacks when using them in gravel. That really looks dangerous. Also you might consider applying a product like Fluid Film to the under body to prevent future rust.

I still have older simpler cars with less electronics. I routinely fix them and keep them on the road. I’m not paying a mechanic to rip me off.

Great work Martin. Just one question. Why do you tighten the bolts upto the correct torque , then tighten up further . Always taught your just dragging metal.

As a treat you could have installed a pdc system in the back since everything was taken off already...
