Maybe learn to work on the car, it could be interesting to folks and much cheaper for you. Changing the throttle body should have taken about 15 minutes and maybe cost 200 bucks
Lexus has/had a customer support campaign for throttle bodies. They’re known to fail. $200 for the throttle body is nonsense, counter price is somewhere around double what he paid. And of course eBay used has the chance of also being bad or failing in the future.
@@danervin2530 then...where would you buy your new throttle body fot the gx? partsgeek is $245 amazon is 406..? Part Number: 220300S021 Supersession(s): 22030-0S021; 2203038041
@@duaneafields I meant nonsense as in “you’re way underestimating parts costs”. I would open a customer support case and try and have it comped at a dealer, or at least ask for assistance, with it being a part that was involved in a customer support program.
You and I both timed buying one of these just in time. Prices have exploded this year on GX460s and 470s. For some reason though, it's even worse on 4Runners, so I bet more and more folks are going to fall in love with the GX platform going forward.
You get a standard v8 and more off-road capability than you’ll ever need in the gx yet as of right now about 50% of used gxs’ are cheaper than 4Runners. The rest being equal. The newer gxs, gls and LCs are the modern suv enthusiasts rig IMO.
I think people just like the body of the 4Runner more and they don’t care about the v8 which is good because Gx’s are about the same price as a 4wd sr5 but with upgraded interior
We own 4 Toyota products. Two GX'S and two third gen 4runners. They have a combined 1,200,000 miles. We abuse our trucks. We change oil every 25,000 miles. Off the top of my head I can tell you we have replaces two radiators. Around 12 coil packs. Two C.V joints. A alternator, plugs and wires. We have never put a timing belt on either 4runner. None of them are sexy. They don't get great mileage and they don't have an abundance of power but they quit.
I had VERY similar experiences to yours. Bought a 2012 SUV in 2020. Wanted something a little newer, however 2012 was the last year of this particular model of SUV. Got it from one state over. It was about an $80 Uber ride just to go pick it up. I too paid for a pre-purchase inspection. As you mentioned, it was well worth it. The vehicle was/is in great shape however, as you pointed out, more likely than not, when someone is planning on getting rid of a vehicle, they tend to stop doing any maintenance in the years or months leading up to it. So, fortunately while I have not had any engine or transmission problems, in the past 18 months, I have replaced the radiator, new shocks & struts all around (TWICE.......but that's another story), a set of tires, a new battery, power steering flush, brake flush, transfer case service, front and rear differential service, and recharging the A/C system. I'm sure I might be missing a thing or two that I've bought. Again, all 'routine maintenance', but it has added up to a very significant amount of money, as I prefer to go to the dealer. I have had absolute HORROR STORIES (over the years) by going to (supposedly) 5-Star (Google) reviewed independent 'mechanics' (places that have been in business for decades). You take the vehicle in for "A", and they fix "A", HOWEVER, along the way, they've broken "B", while fixing "A", that you don't even find out about until months later. Just 'do the work yourself' sounds good, HOWEVER, if you're NOT mechanically inclined (and have never been), do you really want to START, by messing with a highly computerized $15 or $25,000 vehicle? Not to mention, I have no 'place' or space to 'work on a car', I don't know anybody who knows about cars (to help me), and my nightmare is to mess something up, be unable to get it back together, and HAVE to walk into the dealer (and be at their mercy), with a bunch of parts in my hand, saying, "HELP!" LOVE my vehicle, and hopefully, after putting all this money into him, I can get 8 or 10 years of relatively problem free driving life out of him. I think your point is............(and MY advice to anyone looking to buy a used vehicle), unless you plan on doing the work yourself, it would be wise get a pre-purchase inspection done AT THE DEALER and to budget (at least) $2,000 for 'routine maintenance' items over the course of that first year or so. $2,000 is a lot of money (for a 9 to 5 person), but my radiator alone was $550 with parts & labor.
You're a crack up... Thanks for the laughs. I'm on my second GX build - sold the first one just to do it all over again. I want to sell the second but can't find a third for a reasonable price anymore! The secret's out mate.
I had that same throttle body issue on my 2000 Land Cruiser. Took the intake pipe off and sprayed some cleaner into the throttle body. Ragged out the carbon build up and that solved the problem.
Taking my '13 to Sequoia National Park, Lake Tahoe, and back down the California coast with other stops along the way on our 2 week road trip in late July. Can't wait! Love this rig!!
A single tear was shed hearing he paid the same price I did for my 470 w/ +80k miles. Granted service history was immaculate and they did intake manifold gaskets, timing belt and water pump.. tough pill to swallow however still happy knowing I have such a great platform
I've owned both a 460 and 470. There are significant advantages to the 470 which I believe are reflected in the less than expected price discrepancies.
We are on our second one, yeah I hear it all of the time about the fuel economy but you buy it for a reason. Both of ours have been bullet proof, no issues ever with these.
My 9 month cost of ownership has been under $100 for a 2012 model: Oil filter and change, air filter change, and inside air filter change. I keep it stock, it's more than adequate for my basic outdoor offroad camping use and normal family road trips. However, don't ask me about my monthly gas expense. ;) Love this vehicle. Like a crossfit athlete with a bowtie.
I have a 2017 premium with 60,000 miles (bought new) and zero issues, mechanically speaking. There are a few areas I dislike. The cabin seems a bit noisy if you press in on some of the plastics or while going over bumps. They creak and make a cracking sound, so to speak. Lexus has mostly fixed the issue (under warranty) by disassembling certain parts of the trim and adding felt or quiet tape. I only take it to Lexus for service. It’s pricey but I feel it’s worth it. Having a well tracked maintenance service record by the dealer will add value, should I ever sell it. Good video and looking forward to more.
I get 16.5 to 18.5 MPG here in central Florida depending on how much city only driving is done. Just drove a 1650 mile roundtrip to NC and averaged 17.6 mpg. Average speed on the way home was 72.
That’s pretty close to what new 4Runners get interstate driving. Consistently topped out at 18.5(75-76mph). Because they’re shaped like a brick and really want for a 6th gear at 70+, their mpg does improve a few mpg if you keep them below 70mph.
cleaning the throttle body likely for the first time in 150k miles actually broke it. The bushings were shot from working against the build up and when they remover all that , the valve wouldn’t stay put. Maybe they tweaked it during the cleaning but I wasn’t going to split hairs at that point. Just wanted the truck running.
Excellent vid. Very entertaining as usual. Love love my Gx. To me there's Nothing better. Get 21 highway. Around town...not sure. Really don't care. This thing is so good. Even have had people stop at traffic lights and ask me about it.
I got a Gx470 10 months ago, $13k. So far, Eibach suspension kit, wheels and 285/70-17 tires. Unexpected maintenance: Fuel cap and battery. Scheduled maintenance: DIY Aisin timing belt kit. I really like this car
@@ramccall runs good and strong. I get some code every now and then about 4L switch or something and I may need rear brakes done soon. I had to replace the alternator about three months ago.

Very Interesting...... my 2004 GX470 may be VERY different from your 2010 GX460.. My GX470 is AMAZING and rides MUCH better and quiet than my 2019 Tesla Model X. With 150,000 miles on my GX470, I have changed many sets of tires, battery, CV joints and a radiator. That's is all... LOVE LOVE LOVE my GX470 and I get average 18 MPG..... Thanks! We go a bit deeper than the local state park but it doesn't matter. I'm just trying to have a little family adventure and keep the kids happy-ish in the process : )
15 MPG, yes, stock. Around town (fairly flat land) we are getting 16-17mpg Interstate runs 21 mpg. But, its a stock GX460 without air suspension, and any aftermarket addons.
We just finished a 2k mile roadtrip. Lots of national parks so idling and stop and go between long freeway runs. We got 16mpg with the roof rack on (just awnings mounted). I did 75-85 a lot as we were in western states with high speed limits.
@@v1rotate391 a dealer by me had a 2013 Base with 40k miles (mint) going for $29k - early 2020. I called to set an appointment that same day. When I got to the dealer it was already being viewed for purchase. I haven’t bothered entertaining these price increases since. Would rather purchase new assuming no eye gouging.
Hey, odd question, but I'm in Northern CO and am looking to get a gx. I am curious if you drive yours on 287, or east on I 70, and how does the ride feel on the concrete highways with expansion joints? My f150 feels like I'm going to bounce off the road and hoping the lexus might have a smoother ride
This video is almost 2 years old and all that service will be due again in about a year. But nothing breaks. Nothing ever breaks on this thing. Ive got 170k now. Zero repairs since the throttle body I talked about in the video.
Nice! Perfect review for someone who isn't loaded and looking to get into one of these. Even with gas as it is Im picking one up this Fall in the same mileage and year range. Definitely subbed.
Throttle body is an easy job to do in your driveway. I just bought a GX with 160k on the odometer, taking her to the local Lexus dealership soon for inspection.
Just came across your channel! Tulsa local myself! Been looking at the 470/460 to replace my 02 sierra. Thanks for the videos and info!! Love the video styles
Good looking GX you have put together 👍🏼 Thanks for all the helpful information ! I myself have a high mileage 2017 GX Premium I bought with 109,000 miles one owner . I will also have Lexus do the 120,000 mile maintenance package it’s around $1,100. I’ll have them do it that way they can give it the once over & I’ll be back to good . I’ll do the little things after that. Thanks again and see you down the road !
Mine is mostly because I never leave the neighborhood unless I have a shoot (2-3 times a month) or hit the trail. I'd probably get a bit closer to you, but yeah AT tires and a roof rack definitely don't help. I wonder what's going to happen when I lift it (soon)...
We got a 2011 with 123k miles for $18.5 a year ago. Scored a front set of Dobinsons 2" complete struts for $400 and $2.64 for the rear lift using washers on the air bag sensors. Have wheeled it hard a few times and never had to lock the center diff because ATRAC is amazing. Can confirm 11-12mpg with 33.5" Kenda Klever RTs ($800 for 5 of them). 4.56 gears would help a lot but I'm too cheap for that. Got a JW Roof rack ($787) to carry our giant Tuff Stuff Alpha tent as well as their rear tire carrier ($1,061). No maintenance issues so far 10k miles later. Taking it to Colorado for Christmas with the wife. We love it so much we got her an 04 GX470 as well. There is a ton of value if you don't use it on massive commutes. Be careful the GX bug is infectious. My dad has had a GX470 and has a GX460 now. My coworker also picked up a 2006 GX470. Thay are amazing cars especially if you have kids and love adventure.
Nice video. I have the same vehicle; same year. My biggest complaint is a rough ride over anything other than a glass smooth highway. Engine is low on torque too, so the trans shifts a lot at highway speeds. I am getting better gas mileage than you, though. I am 80% commuter and get 17-19 mpg at 70-mph. Drops quickly in town driving to 13. No major problems so far at 125,000 miles. Did have to change a leaky radiator, one side mirror, and a front wheel hub bearing. Otherwise no issues.
Wow I'm getting 15 and on road trips getting 17.5 with a cargo box and AT tiers.....Flat lander and closer to sea level though. Good stuff ! Stop being a sucker for Toyota mat dept though :) "Hey we need to do this fuel thing that is going to cause your throttle body issue later" Toyota's fix themselves.....er at least that's what I tell myself :)
Mpg estimates are for stock tires and stock weight. What do you expect? Also it depends on what you do with it. Offroading, overlanding, yields lower mpgs. Not gonna help your 15 mpg factory rating
I have a 460. I use regular gas - probably fine, since it's the same engine (and probably same tuning, based on identical performance numbers) as in some models of the sequoia and tundra, which are regular gas vehicles. No engine knocking from what I could detect.
I gave that a try when I first got mine. It resulted in a 10-15% reduction in gas mileage for me which is what a lot of people report. That negates the savings for me not to mention the extra carbon build up. They are tuned slightly different, the ECU just retunes it to retard detonation when it detects knocks or pings I believe. Lots of people go your route though. It’s a parenial debate on iH8mud.com Good wrte up on it specific to Lexus models here - fourwheeltrends.com/what-happens-if-i-dont-use-premium-gas-in-my-lexus/
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods I've read incessantly on this. Agree with you - there's a split of opinion on this matter. I'm by no means an engineer, but am technically minded and now find myself in the nether of the KCLV rabbit hole. There is definitely a power deficit to using lower octanes, primarily due to the ignition timing change, like you said. Whether that amounts to a corresponding reduction in gas milage...I don't know? Hope you enjoy this stuff. blog.rr-racing.com/news/2017/01/24/improving-knock-learning-and-power-on-lexus-ecus/ www.fjcruiserforums.com/threads/toyota-specific-pids.739248/
@@TopgearFTW I just spoke with a dealer here in ABQ about the gas octane issue. I'm in line for a 2022/23 model and wanted to know. They said there is no need for premium gas from the 2019 and newer models. More specifically, for around town driving, using regular is just fine. I'm not sure what changed, but I guess they figured it out. For those with older models, it is still recommended to use premium fuel, only, for all driving (hwy/city).
I have a 2016 GX and consistently get 21mpg on road trips going 75mph-85mph in mild elevation. You're getting 11mpg because you went with BFG KO2s, while great performers they are HEAVY and will utterly destroy your efficiency.
It’s cheap too, you can do your whole truck for probably less than $200. I did my doors for like $30 (bought $56 of material and have a bunch left over to do other parts)
Anyone know what a "4x4 service" is at the Lexus dealer? I would hope it includes a trans drain a full, since off-roading generates alot of heat in the transmission.
4x4 service at Lex/Toyota is fluid changes on both the diffs and the transfer case, plus greasing the propeller shaft and driveline. Sorry, Transmission is a separate service. Transmission service requires a special machine to regulate fluid change pressure, the diff and transfer cases are just a drain and fill service.
Bought a 2014 with 123k miles … came to pick it up and the radio stopped working… they said it was updating but never came on… so i took it back smh. It also had a weird transmission jitter.. i’ll be back with a GX with much lower miles or maybe the 22’
I did a pretty extensive roof rack video on how I load the platform, and talked about how I mounted it then. I didn’t go into detail because I got lucky and got my mounts from a friend who had a connection in Yakima. Mine are from Yakima Australia so unfortunately you can’t get them here. They do have a solution for the GX now though which is very similar.
Thank you so much for making great content, although we missed the haunted ghost town video... That being said, how in the eff is your fuel mileage so bad? We average 16 city / 21-22 HWY @ 75mph on the east cost.
I rarely leave the neighborhood. My kids schools are close, my wife works less than a mile away and I work from home. Plus, its hot as shirt here so I idle a LOT more than normal.
Tires are another culprit. The stock tires and wheels have much lower rolling resistance than ATs and weigh about 20lbs less (unsprung rotating weight) per corner.
I average 15.3 but there are lots of hills where I live. Road trip from San Francisco to Los Ángeles i just averaged 20.1 mph cruise control at 75 (very windy too).
I have a 14 LX570, visited some buddys in the SF Bay Area, and on my way back to LA, i got 21 MPG setting the radar cruise to 85 with AC on. I thought the dash computer was breaking my balls, but when i stopped at the pump in Lost Hills, i was pleasantly surprised to find that it was indeed getting 21 MPG. Even after i passed the grapevine, my average was 19 MPG which is still 2 better than EPA

Thanks! I've had a good experience from Tri-city transmission in Tempe and Brakes Plus in Gilbert. BP is hit and miss by location but the guys at the Warner shop are all 4x4 guys. That's where I take it for fluids, etc. I used to take it to Chandler Toyota but they didn't exactly nail it on my throttle body so...

@@WastingTimeInTheWoods I said “poor man’s whatever” as in people are calling it their poor man’s Overlander or their poor man’s off roader etc. “landcruiser “ in your case . Sorry I didn’t painfully break it down to begin with.

Maybe you can send me some message and I'll try to remember to watch for it. Keep up the great videos. James
Honest feedback, but the complacent lack of car knowledge on a channel that mentions over landing as one of its primary points of focus is pretty off-putting.
I showed the Odometer 1 minute in when I talked about the mileage we had added, but I guess I could have read it out to be more clear... It had 151K when I shot this video. 181k now and zero new repairs. Thx for watching!
Everyone always mentions fuel mileage on these, but never mentions how expensive the GX, or any Lexus for that matter, is to insure. A 10yr old GX is more expensive to insure than a brand new 4runner(by a bit, but still).
So no coolant leak issues on this one? I was all ready to take delivery of a 2011 tomorrow, now I'm reading LOTS of issues with "valley plate coolant leaks"
You paid to have it inspected by a Lexus dealer and they didn’t tell you all of those services were needed? If they did why didn’t the selling dealership take care of those services or adjust the price accordingly?
Carbon Build-up? I thought Toyota GX or Landcruiser is Very Reliable and since it is Port Injection, carbon build up is not on its vocabulary. Now I'm having second thoughts in buying a Toyota GX!!!
With bigger tires, rims and all the weight of roof rack added, expect to get less than the rated mpg. My 2011 gx460 can get 26mpg on highway driving at 60mph.
She does. You can run her on 87 but Lexus says that will cause carbon build up long term so you may end up needing a valve job or new plugs more often. Also, you loose like 10% on the fuel economy so not really worth the savings for me. Dudes run em on 87 though...
