High poly to Low poly Workflow : Retopo with 3D-Coat (2)

This is the second part of the high poly to low poly workflow tutorial for game assets. In this one I will use the retopology tools of 3d-Coat to create the low poly model.
3d-Coat can also be used to bake the textures like normalmap, ambient occlusion and diffuse/albedo map.

Honestly Dude, i know some of these videos are YEARS AND YEARS old. but that to me makes it even better. its become a lot easier to learn 3D, and you was "And are" out here giving out Info for FREE. you're a Real one in a world FULL of Fake ones.

FYI to all make sure you have the box checked for IMPORT W/O Voxelization . this will put your object in (S) surface mode (not voxel) (V) . I don't think it is checked by default. I would also rename your new retopo object when in the retopo room .it is named by default RetopoGroup1.

Yes, will come, the next one is retopo with Blender and retopoflow, also manual unwrap will be explained then. After that baking and then texturing, stay tuned.

you can duplicate the low poly before scuplting.... and bake it with cycles...

How do you keep from 3d coat selecting verts on the other side of the model and ruining the model by merging to them?

if you make clothes in marvelous designer and you want to texture it in substance painter, do you export everything as one object?

What if it's a mesh that can't be auto unwrapped? Can you just export the low poly to blender, unwrap, then back to 3dcoat? Or is it better to manual unwrap in 3dcoat if needed? Thanks for the tut btw!

you are welcome. you can unwrap manually in 3d-coat and blender as well, as you like.

I'm using 3DC too, but the problem was when I finish retopo my object with symmetry ON and export it I only seen half of the model. secondly, when I tried to go to UV Viewport in 3DC the retopo I made was not seen there, do you ALWAYS need to bake before seeing it in UV? I only need the retopo / UV without a normal map as I'm using marmoset for baking. I am from TOPOGUN which is not updated for almost 2 years.

Hey good sir!! Love your videos, but I seem to have a problem right after I get done baking my model. I have everything you have yet I just have the VoxTree tab only visible in paint mode as opposed to layers. I can't seem to find a source or a video on what it is that I am doing wrong. If you could help me that would be fantastic!!!!

Is 3D-Coat a good alternative for Blender including laying out of the UV? Im use to Maya and started using Blender, loving it but need sometime better for the UV and retopo tools. Also i Topogun any good?

3d-coat is great for retopo and uv but Blender with addons like retopoflow is great as well

Had a look at retopoflow, love it, but I want a UV layout packages as well. Looks like 3D-Coat has that. Blender needs some more tools for the UV layouts.

@Frosty Dog, sure 3d coat is great, but you had Maya? you could use the quad draw tool for retopology in Maya, plus since you already have experience with the Maya layout it will be more convenient

3D-coat has replaced a lot of my tools for making 3d-art, its very very capable! Keep using blender for rendering, but get 3d-coat for painting, high poly modeling, and retopo

I will show retopo for 3d-coat - because it is great - and, as I said, retopo with blender in the next part, which is also very good when using retopoflow addon.

I meant in 3D Coat. I figured it out by going to the Textures menu. Also, this retopo method is very very useful but kind of imprecise. I am used to working on the grid and I want my angles and lengths to be precise (especially since I plan to make modular assets) so is there a way to do that? Also, what workflow is better for architecture Low Poly and then Sculpt or the other way around?

I dont think that you need sculpting when doing hard surface modeling, checkout my new Blender videos on hard surface modeling.

Because I like to sculpt in Blender, it's great... and free. I use 3D-Coat most of the time for retopo and sometimes for texture-painting.

I know that low poly assets get triangulated, and I think engines (I use Unreal) automatically triangulate meshes. Is there any benefit with triangulating yourself before you import or does it not matter?

shamnik1320, it should be in quads, because of animation, except it is a non-deformable object, watch flipped normals to get better explanation

your first model was low poly, why create a new low poly in 3d coat ? pointless.
