It's a battle royale review of higher-proof/overproof Tequilas as I try to squeeze in a really long video before the summer heat retakes Chicago. (Scotch malt drinkers and rum drinkers are pretty used to cask strength or overproof bottlings, but in Tequila they're still hard to find.) Everyone wins, except maybe Mezcal and definitely all the Tequilas bottled at 40% or lower. To my surprise I don't knock over any of the bottles.
Stats:
-Tapatio 110 Blanco (La Alteña NOM 1139, Los Altos, Lot TB110-16 09/07/2018, 55% ABV), 88/100.
-Don Fulano Blanco 100 Proof (Tequileña NOM 1146, Los Valles w/agave from Los Altos, Lot 008DFB19, Bot. 896, Non Chill Filtered, 50% ABV), 87/100.
-Chamucos Diablo Blanco (Casa de Piedra NOM 1586, Los Valles w/agave from Los Altos, likely bottled in 2018, 55% ABV), 85/100.
-Fortaleza Blanco Still Strength (Los Abuelos NOM 1493, Los Valles, Lot 12-5, 46% ABV), 85/100.
-Casa Noble Joven (La Cofradia NOM 1137, Los Valles, Barrel 1082, 288 btls, 51% ABV), 86+/100.
(After-the-fact note: when I went back to stock up on a few of these after making this video, two of these - the Tapatio and CN - had been abandoned to the closeout section. By contrast, the Patron Silver chunk of the Tequila shelf had a serious dent in it. This is why we don't get nice things.)

I just picked up a bottle of Tapatío 110 last night. I have a pretty decent tequila collection, by my goodness, the 110 is sooo delicious! I’m going to savor this bottle as long as possible.

Just bought a bottle of Don Fulano Blanco and I must say it was not that great, overly grqazzy,medicinal,very little agave sweetness, mouth feel was lacking not a creamy oily mouth feel.Great looking bottle with just o.k Tequilla...The Forteleza on the other hand is AMAZING and only 2nd to Calle 23 crillo cheers

Oh no! The 100 proof, right? I was rather fond of it here, but it might be worth a revisit...

A very informative tasting. I've always preferred mezcal to tequila and I guess one of the reasons I gaven't explored more tequila is the abv. Just a couple of weeks ago I decided I had to do something about that and got the Fortaleza. It's a shame you have to spend this kind of money to get good stuff and there's not much of it in the U.K and going back to the scoring point I can't imagine scoring a tequila more than 88. I'm on the lookout for more of it though. Cheers

Thanks! I remain agnostic about just how high tequila can go, but I'm pretty sure that if the producers have (especially financial) reason to shoot for quality and integrity then we'll start seeing more of it. Once the interest in ridiculous charcoal-filtered extra anejos or whatever starts to pass, I'd like to think someone out there is going to start making the stuff the really old-fashioned way (underground fermentation puts, direct-fired stills, etc.)

@@Hirsine Thanks! The Fortaleza (IMHO) is perfectly fine, I just can't justify it when it's priced where it is. As for agave vodka, the diffuser-made stuff is pretty much already there...

Hi Scott, there is also an Tapatio Anejo with 38% ABV for the same price as the 110. Bielle also offers a Rhum "Ambre" with 50% ABV and aged for 18 Month. Do you think its worth to try the Anejo and the Ambre? When you reviewed the Clairin Rhums you gave the aged ones a lower ranking, because the oak stole the complexity of the spirts and made them more like bourbon, but with the Mette Plum Brandy the 2 years in oak worked great. Do you have a rule of thumb or something to know which distillate works with oak? And last question: Dont the prices for some eau de vies, rhums and mezcals seem a little high, especially the ones that are just aged for a few month in oak. Probably not comparable but for that prices you can get 15+ year old whiskys, rums or armagnacs - age is not everything but the cheapskate in me is thinking that. And lastly this will sound really silly, but did it feel weird at one point to try expansive white spirits. I think i assosiate them with vodka and have a bit of a blockage. Can you relate?

I'd be curious to try the Tapatio Anejo but no, I wouldn't expect it to be better than the unaged one at way higher proof (I'd also be curious to try an unaged Mette plum spirit, actually!). And no, I don't know if I have solid rules yet. 😅 Think about the differences in cost between whisky and (say) eau de vie like this. In the US you can buy say ten thousand calories worth of milled grain flour (ultimately your source of alcohol) at your grocery store for around $4-5, maybe ten bucks if you get the good stuff. But plums, say, will cost about $2 a pound, and you'd need 50lbs to get the same amount of starting energy. That means, even before your raw materials hit the still your expenses are an order of magnitude higher if not more. Combine that with a much smaller production scale and not being plugged into a big logistical system and, independent of the question of quality and QPR, it totally makes sense to me why a lot of these artisanal unoaked spirits cost the way they do. Casks cost money but not too much (you can still easily get a new 200l American oak cask for under $200) warehousing costs money but not too much. So one could well turn the question around: why is old whisky so expensive when the young stuff is so cheap?

@@differentspirits4157 You are a genius. It makes more sense now. I think some agave plants for mezcal are even 10+ years old, in contrast to some grains which can be harvested twice a year nowadays = not comparable. Thanks for answering. Kind regards.

@@jonscr6499 Yup, and then imagine a couple of guys spending a day driving out to the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere to harvest those agaves by hand and carry back whatever they can fit in the truckbed. Not to say that mezcal or whatever else can't be overpriced, just that there's another order of pain-in-the-ass involved! 😁

Which tequilas do you recommend that have a rich thick/buttery/creamy/ oily mouthfeel??
@differentspirits4157
@differentspirits4157 3 года назад
For maximum butter, I think high-proof valles distillate is the way to go. The Casa Noble is nice if you need some oak in there, but I'm tempted to pitch something like the Cascahuin Plata 48% (review forthcoming). Ask me again tomorrow and I might say different!

Whats a good party-big biting tequila?
@differentspirits4157
@differentspirits4157 2 года назад
Biting, as in shot back after biting a wedge of lime? Not really my thing, honestly, but I'd say the best deal in party-big tequila at the moment is the Cimarron series. Sold in liter bottles, cheap, silky (in a good way), made by the fine folks also behind Don Fulano here.
