New subbie! I've been teaching for 25 years. The last 15 years I've been a world language teacher. Last school year, I was re-assigned from high school to middle school level, and I had to reinvent how I taught. I discovered interactive notebooks, and was hooked. But I didn't know how to start the year off using them, which is what I want to do this year. Your video was the most clear, concise and easy to wrap my head around the what to do and how to do it! As a language teacher, there is a natural connection to how students learn math, which explains why I loved geometry when I was in high school! I am going to binge watch and use your videos to make the transfer from your set to how I would set up my notebook for my language class. Thank you for sharing this, you rock!, and I can't wait to see your next video!

Brianne Beebe I just set up my teacher store on tpt...kind of...I'm stuck. Afraid if I don't use fonts, banners, and backgrounds correctly I'll get kicked off! Any suggestions? I'll look to see if you have a vid for that.
@BusyMissBeebe
@BusyMissBeebe 6 лет назад
I don’t have a video about TPT. When it comes to fonts and images, make sure you’ve read the terms of use from the creators. Usually it’s fine to use them as long as you’re not distributing the fonts, images, etc as your own work. (In other words, since you’re using them to create your own products it’s fair and legal.) It’s a good idea to add in a terms of use page that copyrights your work and also gives credit to the creators of the fonts, images, etc that you used.

When I was student teaching, my host teacher had students staple in their notes sheets. That year, we had some special staplers, but it usually works well. With middle kiddos, they need few and simple shapes to be able to cut quickly. I made the mistake of having them cut 3 maple leaves each for a project and it took over 20 minutes.

I love using Interactive Notebooks. In my content, having a good reference is so important for students to be able to apply their knowledge. Notebooks help keep students accountable for curating reference material. Once students are absent they know to get their notebooks up to date. Before notebooks students would just let whatever content they missed slip. I'm working on getting the TOC page and everything else up on my blog.

I've gotten a lot of good ideas from this video. Trust me, I've taken notes! What state do you teach in? I teach in Alabama. It's interesting to see different policies. For instance, my district will not let us grade their notebooks. I think it's very important, but hey...what can I say...I'm just a teacher who is in the line of duty every day. LOL
@BusyMissBeebe
@BusyMissBeebe 4 года назад
Hi! I teach in NY. My district is somewhat hands-off. They are just now creating a district-wide grading policy. It's great because we feel that we are trusted as professionals to make our decisions, but it can be frustrating when we do want more guidance on something. I'm so glad this video was helpful to you!

Do include warm-ups or QOD's in your notebook? If I did a warm-up everyday would I end up running out of room? Do you also include the worksheets for practice that you do in class?
@BusyMissBeebe
@BusyMissBeebe 6 лет назад
Sort of. Students have the choice to use their notebooks for warm-ups or a separate sheet of paper. My students last year either used the margin in the notebook, a page at the back of their notebook, or the back of their homework. For our in-class practice, students may keep the papers in their pocket page, but most throw it away after I check it.

One question I have is regarding Thinking Classrooms. I have started implementing a Thinking Classroom structure in my middle and high school math classes, and students have moved away from writing down notes as rigidly as they had before. I think too often students are copying down the steps and then "mimicking" the steps they copied down, which shows me that students have learned how to mimic, but they don't actually have a deep understanding of the math concept (this is shown when students are given a problem that doesn't explicitly follow the steps from their notes, and they may have to think outside the box). Do you find that these notebook counteract mimicking? What does your lesson structure look like? Thanks!
@BusyMissBeebe
@BusyMissBeebe 3 месяца назад
Hi. I have a video on my lesson structure. But it’s the traditional math lesson structure. You can adapt your notes for your teaching style. I give my students guided notes since I teach geometry and there are so many diagrams.

I wish I did. I didn't feel it was fair to force this whole way of teaching on someone else. I also did not feel comfortable with students sharing supplies or sitting at tables together. My school wasn't really clear with protocol at the beginning of the year - they were still figuring stuff out. I had to make a decision right away. I'm dying to go back to INBs next year.

I have a question about the grades, Does it affect their progress report and report cards?
@BusyMissBeebe
@BusyMissBeebe 5 лет назад
That is totally up to you as the teacher. My school has a culture where many students wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t for a grade, so I add it in as a quiz grade at the end of the quarter. I grade pretty leniently, and frame it as an “easy 100” (getting a 100 for something that they should be doing anyway). In the end it can help them out a little bit, but generally if a student fails their notebook, they were already failing anyway.

But when I was student we had an entire course in 6th grade dedicated to how to organize, how to take notes, how to study, etc. I loved that course, and wish it was offered to every student. Teachers are so overloaded with standards to teach that it's hard to teach those skills now. Very sad indeed.
