my thoughts at three am: MS GOLDBERG, MS GOLDBERG, MS GOLDBERG, MS GOLDBERG, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RUB YOUR HANDS BETWEEN YOUR HANDS BETWEEN MY *KNEEEEES*
I actually prefer this to March of the Falsettos, it's less creepy and fits somewhat with the themes of In Trousers better than March of the Falsettos did with Falsettos
@@flodotstatix In Falsettos, March Of The Falsettos is supposed to show the lack of maturity of the men. I think it kind of fits in with the part that Trina is singing (since she complains about men), but, yeah, this song fits in more with all of the songs of this musical, while March of The Falsettos doesn't go as well with the other songs.
In Trousers: The Rape of Miss Goldberg by Marvin Everyone: Marvin does _WHAT_ to Miss Goldberg??? Falsettos: Marvin Hits Trina Everyone: Marvin does _WHAT_ to Trina??? Some things never change, do they, Bill?
Maiden of Cats it’s not rape. well maybe it is because “rape” in this case means stealing. he wants to steal her glasses because they’re a sign as self-confidence and he wants that because he’s a closeted gay wanting to convince himself he’s straight
I kept getting confused over the “Marvin gets the things he wants, except the things he wants” part and then I had an epiphany. Given the fact that this is In Trousers and no one knows what’s happening this is obviously just a theory. Anyway, the “things Marvin wants” is a heterosexual relationship, at least that’s what he’s supposed to want so he creates this fantasy about his teacher. The whole “except the things he wants” part is referring to the fact that in this fantasy he does get what he “wants” from her, but that’s not what he really wants cuz he’s gay.
@@beefykeith48 there are a lot of kids listening to this album. this musical is deliberately vague and confusing, so you are NOT hot shit for understanding something that someone doesn't. given your profile picture I'd guess you're about 16 TOPS - I bet there's a shit ton of stuff you don't understand about this musical either. get over yourself.
I would just like to inform you all that when William Finn was asked about High School Ladies at 5 O'Clock, he said that he's "gone back and tried to figure out what it means, but it doesn't make any sense"
Kinda like "in case of smoke, please call the mothers on their phones and say their sons are all on fire" in Four Jews In A Room Bitching he doesn't remember wth that lyric means either
Marvin doesn't even KNOW Ms. Goldberg; he's never seen her eyes. He craves her as the perfect woman, just because he projected his own image of the perfect woman onto her, like he did with Trina. But, he needs to see her eyes, to prove to himself that he is RIGHT and really does love his platonic ideal of a woman. He didn't like those high school girls he knows? He justifies it as, "Well, they don't really COUNT as people/women, unlike Ms Goldberg/perfect womanhood." In the end, he gets what he wants, he sees that Ms Goldberg is just a person, when those sunglasses are off/he sees her eyes. I am procrastinating a paper rn
I thought it was funny how when marvin tried to convince himself he’s straight he’s “into older women” and in falsettos Jason is always paranoid about becoming like his father, though he has an entire song about how he likes rebellious mature girls
I listened to this at like 4 am and I had to go back and make sure that this was real and That I wasn’t dreaming and I was horrified when I found out it was real
Yeah, don’t expect Bill to remember anything about it... he says it hardly makes sense. The things you learn from being his student at NYU for years...
Ik this is an old comment but I once met Bill Finn at a Brandon Uranowitz show. I almost bumped into him, got really nervous and stuttered before making a quick exit.😅
High School Ladies at 5 O'Clock is actually...a really great song? It feels so eerie despite the mostly upbeat tone, building up to the song following it, which is a little more obviously disturbing, forming a pretty impressive contrast imo. The music in this musical is just really hecking good tbh, I can't believe it's so underrated even amongst the Falsettos fandom.
I always interpreted high school ladies at 5 o'clock to be how Marvin thinks women think, especially since he's only fourteen he's assuming the women around him are there to serve him, be fun and be the stereotype of young women especially of the time.
I don't get why people are getting angry when people say they found this song from TikTok. Just be grateful that In Trousers is getting recognition and people are actually searching up the original source. edit - i still kinda agree w this but i hate how people misinterpret the songs meaning and spread false things when they barely know the story of in trousers please
I honestly feel blessed that I wasn’t aware of this when it happened 😂 It probably would have given me major anxiety I like sharing this niche interest with a small community ❤ Makes it feel even more special.
@@jamesblake5215 MISS GOLDBERG, MISS GOLDBERG, MISS GOLDBERG, MISS GOLDBERG! ((what does Marvin want from miss Goldberg? what does Marvin want from miss Goldberg? ))
Tenya Iida yeah but like some people use it out of context and it’s infuriating. most of the people using this on tiktok aren’t interested in the musical. it’s just how i see it.
hepahepa hepatitis It doesn’t.. matter.. if someone is into.. the musical..? Hello? Whomever said someone had to be truly invested in where something originated from in order to like the byproduct of said thing? Even as a theatre kid myself, this mindset bothers me greatly. If people wish to enjoy this song, let them do so without them being invested in where it originated from. This is akin to saying that in order to be into a particular scene from a movie, you *must* read the book that the movie bases off of. That’s just not how it works.
i could actually write about these songs for days william finn is a genius in trousers is undoubtedly the worst of the marvin trilogy, and is still a masterpiece
@@yeehawamber507 in the Marvin Trilogy, there is three musicals: In Trousers, March of The Falsettos, and Falsettoland. March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland were two one-act musicals combined to make the now two-act musical Falsettos.
@@confetti_kisses427 omg what's ur analysis of in trousers (the dream) because I've been trying to analyse it for so long and I still don't know whats going lmao
Ok theory, Miss Goldberg throughout the show seems to kinda know Marvin is gay ("does he like to screw his friends", set those sails seems to be about her urging him to discover himself, etc) and it seems like "Marvin always gets the things he wants except the things he wants" also alludes to him being gay, but to me, it sounds like the last two of the "except the things he wants" sound like "accept the things he wants" like she's trying to get him to accept his sexuality. It's probably nothing, but I think it's interesting at least.

when miss goldberg is asking marvin what he wants and marvin sings lalalala over her its becuase he wants to ignore the things he wants because what he wants isnt miss goldberg who he describes as "perfect womanhood"
Okay, I get that the second part is a weird skit that Marvin wrote, but what about the first? I don't understand why is Marvin screaming and I just don't get anything of it. Can someone please explain me?
this is going to be EXTREMELY long winded, so i apologize in advance. okay, so! both parts of the song are fantasies, with the first vocally led by his sweetheart and backed up by his wife & ms. goldberg. in my opinion, the first line "we be practicing adventures of a sort which divert you but will never ever try to hurt you" shows that marvin lacks the capacity to understand girls / their actions and doesn't feel attracted to them, but also doesn't feel particularly threatened by them either. the ladies themselves initially seem disposable & like possessions rather than people ("we be waiting on the streets / tap us on the feet and we go for a walk") as if they're waiting hand and foot on marvin, and almost seem like admirers from the line "we admire the photograph of marvin on the stage." they also repeat the same titular phrase and refer to themselves as mumbling and repetitious, which is marvin's irritation for them shining through, as he's mocking them/their voices and isn't able to discern each woman from one another because he's not interested any of them. they're representations of how marvin views women, as well as what he's forcing himself to want. (he mentions in a later song that he feels nauseous when girls in the hallways touch him, which furthers the idea that he wants to mold them into something he can somewhat tolerate, aka this fantasy he can control.) however, as the fantasy progresses, they become more vocal and diverge from how marv imagines him- his sweetheart asks if he's "better than a banana" which could be an innuendo (asking if having sex with him is better than masturbation? dunno), and he immediately screams because he's no longer in control of his thoughts. his sweetheart keeps asking (in a super taunting way) if he touches, drinks and screws, to which marvin continues to scream no, which shows that he's disgusted by the thought of having sex with her and that there's little to no intimacy in their relationship. all three then ask if he likes to screw his *friends* (meaning men), to which marvin yells "DOES HE?!" because he's so confused about his sexuality and genuinely doesn't know. at this point, he threatens his sweetheart by holding a chair above her head, obviously upset that she evoked the feelings that he's actively trying to repress. immediately following this is his fantasy about """raping""" his teacher to prove to himself that he's heterosexual and desires women (but that song is an analysis of its own, whew). i hope this clears some things up, sorry for the length!!
lions for scottie THANK YOU SO MUCH! I really needed it, and don't worry about the lenght: I like complete explanations. Again, thank you for taking your time to write this
Anita078 you're super welcome, no problem!!! 💌 i love analyzing in trousers more than anything (this song in particular), so getting all my thoughts out was fun! (:
@Cowlan no lmaoo. but there's no denying the subtle messages in these songs. Especially HSLA5OC. unless I'm overthinking it. But it takes alot of overthinking to write an analysis of every song in this album
let me try to explain this.. Marvin is a closeted gay and this song takes place specifically when he is 14 he is having a fantasy about his teacher the r!pe is a metaphor of him forcing heterosexuality on him instead of an actual person. he takes of her glasses instead of actually assaulting her attempting to strip her of her confidence because he is jealous of the fact she is so confident with who she is and he is not so much. This musical is Marvin reflecting on his past relationships trying to figure out why his current marriage is going down the drain , this musical is pretty much part 1 of 3. i hope this cleared it up a little bit.

he doesnt actually r-word ms goldberg. but making her take off her glasses, is a kind of deprivation of dignity because hes forcing her to reveal something to him that she very aggressively wanted to keep hidden.
I love how in high school ladies at 5 oclock the ladies ask if marvin likes to screw his friends, and in falsettos marvin refers to whizzer as his friend, even in their last song together.

I like reading all the comments of the people from TikTok being hella confused and not knowing what’s happening in this song LMAOO Edit: for people who don’t know what’s happening in this song: in the reply’s I tried to explain what’s happening to the best of my ability because, I love this musical and I want more people to enjoy it ☺️
In Trousers is the prologue to a trilogy about a guy named Marvin. The three parts are In Trousers, March of the Falsettos, and falsettoland. Marvin in In Trousers is younger and while going through his childhood he deals with family trouble, sexuality, puberty, anger issues, etc. In this song specifically it’s super hard to tell what’s happening but, here’s my best guess. Marvin in his head knows he isn’t straight so he sees all women as object and as carbon copies of one another (they aren’t interesting to him). Like when their singing the, “la la la” thingys in the song I believe that’s all he hears when women speak to him because, he has trouble understanding women as a people. He also has trouble with the idea of straight sex. So when she says, “ is he better than banana?” (Y’know like masturbation) his immediate response is to yell. The second song The R**e of Mrs. Goldberg is Marvin’s fantasy about his teacher. The r**e part of it is more metaphorical in the sense that she has no idea he’s fantasizing about her. And since Marvin has no idea what he likes in women (CUZ HE DOESNT LIKE WOMEN) he try’s to convince himself that Mrs. Goldberg is the peak of beauty (WHICH DOESNT WORK CUZ HES GAY) so, he pretty much just fantasizes about her in the hopes of turning himself straight. and then the rest of the trilogy I’m not going to talk about cuz it makes me really sad. ( falsettos is so good like I can’t even get myself started cuz I won’t stop. I’ve been listening to it for years now and to this day it remains my favorite music of all time its so heartfelt and simplistic if you wanna watch it there’s REALLY GREAT bootlegs on y O utubE) anyway that’s my analysis on this song in specifics. And honestly if you want me to go more in depth in the whole musical I can I LOOOVVEE ITTT.
How did tiktok get in trousers out of all theatre songs. It took me a whole ass year to find in trousers after falsettos and tiktok went fuck falsettos we in trousers 😗✌️

Hey I’m really confused, I’m really really new to falsettos and everything surround it so I just wanna know, is this it’s own musical or is this like part of falsettos???
originally falsettos two acts were seperste shows. in trousers is the first in the trilogy, then march of the falsettos, and then falsettoland. so in trousers is technically a prequel
why does the harmony thing part from 3:07-3:12 sound very familiar, like something from falsettos (I ask this cause I know a bunch of the harmonies or runs from in trousers were then kinda implemented in Falsettos in some very similar ways)
i know you commented three months ago but listening to it it sounds similar to the harmony where trina sings “marvin isn’t like he said, you’re probably gonna hurt his pride” during this has better come to a stop
