A 7 day epic backpacking adventure on the High Sierra Trail!
The High Sierra Trail traverses the Sierra Nevada mountains from West to East in Sequoia National Park, California. The trail starts at Crescent Meadow in the Giant Forest, and ends at the summit of Mount Whitney (the highest peak in the contiguous USA).
I'd highly recommend this trail to anyone who enjoys backpacking! The scenery was first class throughout, incorporating stunning alpine lakes, towering peaks, huge waterfalls, and incredible views. The trail is well marked and defined, and appropriate tent sites are plentiful. As this trail goes through some more remote areas of the Sierra, it is easy to find solitude, and there is an abundance of wildlife (I saw a bear, lots of deer, marmots, pika, lizards, a snake, trout, chipmunks, squirrels..... and a few too many mosquitos!).
The weather was ideal on my trip, but you should prepare for anything, as the weather can change quickly in the high Sierra.
Please note: You do need a permit to do the High Sierra Trail. Check the park website for full details.
Some of my trip highlights were:
- Seeing a bear
- Precipice Lake
- Having Moraine Lake to myself
- Using the world's most scenic toilet
- Seeing a "firebow"
- Summiting Mount Whitney
- The giant pancake breakfast at Whitney Portal Store
Total distance: 73.7 miles.
Total elevation gain: 17,080 feet.
Total elevation loss: 15,427 feet.
Highest elevation: 14,505 feet.
Marmot attacks: 0

@@josephrobb2321 It'll be worth the wait! I had permits in 2020 and 2021, but had to cancel both years, because of a combination of covid restrictions, cancellation of the park shuttles, and wildfire closures. When I finally did it in 2022, it was definitely worth all of that waiting. Enjoy!

What a trip down memory lane. Back in 1990 we wanted to climb Mount Whitney out of Whitney Portal but couldn't get a permit. So, we did the same hike you just did, coming from the west. So neat to see the trail again after all these years. We did stay at the Kern river hot springs. Yes it was hot but we cooled it down with a few pots of the cold Kern River! Thanks for sharing!!

It's a wonderful trail. It was amazing how few people were out there, between Precipice Lake and Wallace Creek Junction. Probably even fewer people back in 1990?

Great video! Really enjoyed how you put it together. Came here to ask your pack weight when you started, but saw it in a comment below. I have the same pack & also think I'll be sitting at about 30lbs at the start.

Amazingly beautiful trail! But I don’t like all the mosquitoes. Ha ha. I did part of this trail last year. When did you do this?
@MaylesTrails
@MaylesTrails Год назад
Haha yeah, I agree! Only 2 of the 6 camps had mosquitos though.... But they were insane in those 2 places! I went July 4th - 10th.

@@MaylesTrails cool. They were really crazy at Tamarack Lake when I was there. I have subbed. I also have a hiking adventure channel, if you could check it out. Thanks.

what size pack did you use?

I used the Gossamer Gear Mariposa. Excellent pack. It's a 60L total capacity, 36L in the main pocket, and 24L in the exterior pockets. At the start of my trip, my pack weight was about 30 pounds, but about half of that was food + bear can. I didn't weigh it at the end, but I definitely packed far too much food! Lesson learned!
