i am going to make these for tomorrow afternoon tea, , .. and my manservant is on vacation, so I have to make it myself, and my last manservant ran away with my silver plate also.
I was at a book reading on Friday where everybody was much better dressed than I was (although so ridiculously spaced out chairwise that they couldn't really see each other so I wasn't sure what the point was. But I digress, they had the most interesting cucumber sandwiches with something like a deviled egg filling with a cream cheese base as the spread and finely chopped dill sprinkled about. Luckily I had nobody that I wanted to impress so I wolfed down as many as I could without being asked to leave. One of those foods where your mood actually lifts. At night, just as I was about to sleep the following words escaped my mouth, "That was amazing". I still don't know what the book was about, but I think I'm going to try and replicate this sandwich. They also had one with a soft Roquefort-esque cheese spread. It was good too, I guess.
Let me know when your book comes out. You're obviously a great writer. I've read probably millions of RU-vid comments. Yours had me tasting the sandwich you described. Now I'm putting dill on the grocery list. The only one I don't have or I'd make myself a sandwich now.
Beautiful video. If you freeze the bread before making the sandwiches and use a serrated knife to gently cut off the crusts as you make the sandwiches you will get a nice clean edge without "squishing" the edges and they will be nice and sharp. That is a trick I learned and it works very well, you just have to work quickly before the bread starts to get soft again..so have everything ready to go beforehand.
You made me smile with this video 🙂 That pesky manservant absconding with the silver! These sandwiches look really tasty, shall have to give them a try.
Bread crust can be made into bread crumbs for other recipes. But, that said, people should eat their food however they like! Good video, nice sandwiches. 🥒🍞😊
Lovely! This is an excellently simple but complete recipe. I'll be making some on the morrow with cucumbers from my vine on the porch. I'm already drooling.
I need those sandwiches! 😋 yummm! I completely agree whole heartedly that sandwiches taste better cut into triangles! Why is that? It's a mystery to me.
I never peel cucumbers, according to dieticians most of the nutritions in the peel so I always leave it on and I include chives; but great job you made me feel hungry lol!
With cucumber sandwiches they should be sliced length ways & always with the crusts cut off-definitely no dill & no cream cheese (although I like cream cheese). My mother was a housekeeper in a house with a butler & that was always they way afternoon tea was served.😊
You manservant is on his annual day of leave, as opposed to being on a day of annual leave - excellent! That is so funny. But that aside, your sandwiches looked excellent. I will give those a try soon. Cheers.
Why would you take the skin of cucumbers? tbh even my dad does the same thing but i really hate it... the skin is the best part, the thicker the skin, the better it tastes..
Sorry James, but there are a few too many mistakes for my liking; Firstly, never cut the sandwiches with a flat blade knife (it squashes the cut edges together and doesn`t present well) you need to use a serrated edge knife and cut lightly. Secondly; cut the cucumber as you did, but remove the inner watery core (otherwise it makes the sandwiches soggy). thirdly; The butter needed to be firmer. seasoning with salt & pepper and adding Dill is great.
Crusts are for peasants Lol That blunt knife squashed those poor sandwiches. Did the last butler run off with the knife sharpener too? Oh dear, oh dear! 😂
These hothouse cucumbers don’t really need it, you can just run a fork over the skin, so the slices look and taste perfect! But if you wish to peel them, do so, of course.
I really like English cucumbers because they have no seeds & they’re much crunchier than the soggy boring American variety. I say this for the benefit of those who’ve suggested you remove the seeds.
Irony that west and east embraces different ideologies. Cucumber's skin is fiber ... Infact good for bowel and settling of gut, so keep them. Bread crust is excess flour into body, hard to digest so we chop it off and throw. And what's with "high society" the world's society has a mix of poor and rich people, in mind, values, attitudes and thought. Unfortunate that your society considers itself rich with a cucumber sandwich! 🙆🏻👍🏼 Good luck for future buddy
Get your loaf of bread sliced lengthwise and take the seeds out.......cut cucumbers length wise. Chop dill fine. Nobody wants dill stuck between their teeth. Cut crusts off.......Buy square bread. White bread.......Otherwise....you do not have a high society sandwich but you do make a good sandwich.
ive always wondered wtf a cucumber sandwich was and boy howdy this looks like the most confusing tasting thing in the world i cant even imagine what it would be like and i really dont want to know

I like this twist on a cucumber sandwich. Personally, I feel that an American audience would be rather unenthusiastic with the traditional; Bread, butter, cucumber, salt recipe.
The cucumber should have a spot of vinegar on it before being divided onto the sandwiches .. Your Manservant should be reprimanded for not telling you ..!
This video is awful.... I don't get if the whole "manservant" thing is an inside joke or something, and this recipe needs to be presented as a twist or take on the typical recipe, as there are many differences from the plethora of other articles and videos available for this snack. On a side note, the presenter lacks any emotion; he seems to have a "meh" kind of attitude throughout the entire video. I'm ending this feeling actually kind of turned off to these finger sandwiches now. Thanks a lot.
Hauke speaking here: I found Dave's take on the sandwiches cool. Where better shoot this sandwich video than at home in front of drawings by his children in the almost-dark? :D
