HIGH-SPEED, ACOUSTIC HOLOGRAPHY WITH ARBITRARY SCATTERING OBJECTS.

For the first time, UCL researchers show how sound waves can be used to levitate and manipulate objects quickly, even with objects obstructing the sound field.
Previous research has already shown that levitation is not just for Harry Potter. Objects can be moved in mid-air using the force from high intensity ultrasound waves to hold something in place, also known as acoustic levitation. This technique also makes it possible to create interactive 3D images, such as holograms, in mid-air that you can see, feel and hear.
However, until now, this could only be done in an empty space; anything in the way of the soundwave would cause the levitated objects to fall.
For the paper, published in Science Advances, the research team has gone one step further by showing how acoustic manipulation is possible outside of such a controlled environment. Levitation and acoustic control can be achieved in real-world scenarios, integrating external objects such as nearby walls, the dashboard of a car or other common appliances.

It's so cool seeing phased arrays not just used in RF but in ultrasound as well

imagine having 1000 x 0.1 [mm] size objects that you could control individually mixing that with the RGB lights. You could create temporary 3D objects with multiple layers... :O Mind blowing what you can do with this

how could u individually control them though, wave interact with all the particles

It doesn't work like that.

The more particles you have the less effective the nodes become. Also the complexity of the space where you can move a particle becomes vastly more complicated.

will be cool for a holodeck could you imitate some objects and terrain with the force? still not receiveless which would be good for pyramid construction and alien abduction.

Will this tech be able to feasibly levitate multiple particles in the future in order to display complex images and scenes? I'd imagine that after 1 or 2 particles the sound waves would start creating a lot of interference patterns that would because exponentially more difficult to control. Even with fine control of 2 particles at high speeds the complexity and clarity of the 3d images displayed would be highly limited. I hope I'm wrong though, it would be wonderful if this tech has a bright future.

Could you shape a fog cloud with ultrasound?
@purdysanchez
@purdysanchez 6 месяцев назад
If you injected the fog into static nodes very precisely, you could see the effect, but this technology probably wouldn't keep the fog in the node for very long

Look how long it took for phones to become what they are now. Yes, we do have an abundance amount of technology but certain projects can only move forward with sufficient, stable funding. Don’t worry, we’ll have hologram text messages from our friends and family eventually:)

@corvus8638 6 месяцев назад
I’d imagine real world application of this technology would be quite complex so will probably take some time to develop. Also I’d imagine the end goal of this would be to use particles of light rather than a tiny ball so that a person could physically move through the hologram

we are unlocking the abstract and mysterious science of sound probably mastered by our very very very old ancester. There are so many evidences of sound technology in pre history that it's obvious for me that something incredible is hidden in this forgotten knowledge.
