Visit my store at weldmongerstore.com for TIG cup Kits, TIG Fingers, Gloves, DVDs, and other quality welding tools. New products being added weekly.
When tig welding on or near an edge, high speed pulse tig helps the weld stick where you want it.
Same settings work on thinner metal but of course , less amperage is needed and smaller electrode and filler metal work better.

Jody has been there since the beginning of welding. He may have even invented it and now he teaches us

I did this today with the same settings. And it does work. His machine is set from factory to a fixed 50% pulse width and that was also selectable on my machine. I also found that it really helps to avoid the corners getting rolled over and being at a lower level than you want it to be.

My buddy JD! I haven’t seen him in a while. June I believe. I can’t wait to hang out in September. FabTech is always a blast.

It also works when you want to TIG upside down (yes, watching the puddle from below sagging down towards you is a bit nerve wrecking, but it works!)

hey there! welding student here. what's the difference between cold and hot rolled steel? love the content Jody, been taking welding classes since high school and am currently enrolled in trade school, you've been a big help with all the content. glad I was able to support your channel through your store with getting some good quality gear. thanks!

Hot rolled steel sheet/plate/bar is formed into shape by rollers when it's red hot. Cold rolled is formed when it's (relatively speaking) cold. Hot rolled steel typically has a tough, dark oxide coating on it called mill scale, from the rolling process. For TIG welding you should grind that off, at least in the weld area, before welding. You can also remove mill scale with an acid soak, even with a mild acid like vinegar-it's called "pickling." Some other welding processes and rods can weld ok through mill scale. Cold rolled doesn't require the removal of mill scale and it is more dimensionally correct but sometimes the cold rolling leaves residual stresses that can be revealed by welding or other heating. This is separate from the usual heat shrinking/warping that happens with welding.

Thanks for another inspiring video. I got a pulse box when I got my Migatronic 160 Pilot 20 yrs ago, but never tried it. Time to dust off and RUN SOME BEADS! Regards from a W11 tig guy in Denmark.

When I read the video title, my first thought was 150 or higher for PPS, still if it works that's what counts. Such a wide range of variables to choose from with pulse controls, been playing for years.

Hi have you tried it yet? I also need to weld on an edge and I would like to try it too. My machine has a setting "Ratio of pulse duration to base current duration" and its factory setting is 5%. That would mean for a pulse frequency of 40 Hz the period is 25ms and the pulse is only active for 1.25ms. Does your machine have this setting too? What has worked for you?

I've just read the specifications for his MT200-AC/DC machine. The pulse width setting on his machine is fixed at 50%. Well 50% is also possible on my machine. Let's try that first. Maybe later a lower pulse duration might have advantages but Amp settings need to be adjusted as well I assume.

Does the high pulse rate have similar effect on welding aluminum in this joint configuration? I will try this weekend.

How do you prevent 'toe-nailing' when pulse welding that groove/fillet(?). It looks like it's easy to accidentally do on your set-up.

I would call that medium pulse. Go a lot higher in certain situations.
