The tenth lecture on women of the Gilded Age in Southampton will tell the story of Grace Clarke Newton. As the daughter of the prominent New York art collector, Thomas B. Clarke, Grace appears headed down the typical path of a daughter of privilege, adored as a child and destined to marry well. Yet something in her romantic, poetic nature sets her apart and adds an element of mystery to her brief life.
John Held, author of “With Brush and Bridle,” has alerted us of our error in misidentifying an image from his book in our presentation focusing on Grace Clarke Newton. The image from page 36 of his book is of R.L. Gerry on horseback, not Richard Newton and is seen at the 20:20 mark of this video. We apologize for the error and for our failure to obtain permission to use the image.
