This was long overdue. It’s fun to kick it barefoot around the campsite, but no sane person familiar with the jungle would ever walk around it without proper footwear. At least in Central America, every other thing growing in the underbrush has thorns. Some of the stuff is strong enough to go through the bottom of a rubber boot. No thanks.
The style of this footwear is referred to as the “mamluk pucker” and it is primarily used for making boots. I went with this because I wanted a high-top pair of moccasins in conjunction with the shin guards. The reason for it the possibility of dangerous snake bites. There is one snake here in particular, called the yellow jaw, that all locals are deathly afraid of. They are not at all common, but you only need one encounter with one of these to have a very bad day. I’m often hours of walk from any human being, so a bite could prove potentially fatal.
