High up on the Dartmoor stream

Well a bit of a nightmare filming this one as unfortunately the idiot behind the camera forgot to check the settings and he filmed the whole lot in 5.3k narrow!! This not only made the editing er somewhat challenging but the smaller field of view meant a lot of boulder shots and "half" trout shown to the camera. Having spent the time and effort to march up on to the Moor and film I wasn't going to waste the footage so I've salvaged what I can and lesson learned for the future.

Thanks Chris ….that was good …lovely mountain stream …very similar to the mountain streams close to my home …and like you I love them 👍
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
Cheers, Rick, you're never going to catch anything above 1/2lb, but I think it's still my favourite type of fishing .

Nice area Chris. Just a joy being in a place like that. That's why I very much enjoy hiking up to upland lakes to fish.......solitude and scenery, but some of the wild trout are pretty big too. Had one close to 2 pounds the other day. I even think my slight preference is for these wild trout lakes over rivers now.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
Sounds like a good fish Carl, is that lake a day ticket water?
@carlhughes9584
@carlhughes9584 Год назад
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 Yes. But some of the lakes in North Wales uplands are actually free as no one knows who owns the fishing rights.

Wonderful video as usual. Quite envious of the number of fish you're catching, Personally had blank nights Thursday, Friday and Saturday without even any bites. Was on the Usk and it was rather chilly but the beatiful surroundings more than made up for the disappointing fishing
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
I've not fished the Usk Peter (another one for the list), but that sounds like some tough fishing. The great thing about this little moorland stream is that in most conditions, if you can present the fly properly, you're going to get some rises. Hooking them, now that's another matter.........

Lovely video Chris...maybe try using your 10ft 2 ish wt euro nymphing rod for some extra reach when dry fly/nymphing on faster, flowing waters...the softer rod action combined with fine tippets makes hookups and playing fish delightful in my view...I use my 10ft 3 wt Vision rod (which feels more like a 2wt to me) for most of my river fishing these days ....a very enjoyable video, thanks for sharing Dartmoor with us.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
I have tried it, but it feels a bit heavy and cumbersome. I might have a look at a vision one. I need something to go on the Christmas list.

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724Sorry to butt in, but I'm getting a vision nymph rod, but can't decide between a hero or a nymphomaniac? Which one are you going for Chris? Nymphomaniac is expensive but everyone raves about it. Apparently the 3 weight is super sensitive and more like a 2 weight which appeals ( I haven't got a 2 weight ). I have also been told that it makes an excellent Dryfly rod too. I've said I don't like euronymphing in previous comment, but having the Welsh dee on my doorstep and grayling season approaching, I'm thinking maybe such a good rod will make me start to like it and anyway it will make a great ultralight Dryfly rod when rivers are low.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
Hopefully tjk will come back with an answer Carl, hint hint.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
I see they do a 9'6" 3 weight version, hmm.

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I confess I didn't read his full message, but have now and he says his vision 3 weight feels like a 2 weight so I'm assuming he's got a nymphomaniac?

Nice one again Chris and what a superb stream and surroundings , very changeable here with levels up and down like a yoyo one day you can do ok and the next is a blank but either way it's just nice to be out , look forward to next video. ATB Mike
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
Hi Mike, still waiting for some proper rain here, we had a serious cloud burst last week which flooded the road to Crediton but hardly touched the river levels. I have to admit I've been ignoring our lowland streams recently as they're just too difficult. "There's gold in them there hill's " well golden trout anyway👍

Great stuff Chris, I'm sure the fish you got around the 7 minute mark must have taken the fly before it had even landed! Dartmoor streams are on the bucket list.

Chris I’ve noticed you measure your catch against your rod have you put markers on to check the size cheers
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
Hi Ian, Yes, I put one inch marks from 8 to 16", our club likes a return to keep track of fish size and numbers. Originally I used some thin strips of electrical tape, then rod whipping (which took too long) now I use a pen that rod makers use to sign their work covered with a drop of rod varnish, much quicker.

Pretty sure I've filled my water bottle from that exact spot. Fishing was the last thing on my mind though, I was more concerned with the squad that were tracking me. I would like to return one day, preferably when there's no risk of a size 9 army boot in the posterior.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
I wouldn't be at all surprised. It's not that far from the Army camp. In fact, there's a chance it might be possible to drive up onto the moor near the camp and walk back downstream to fish. Whether it will be any quicker is debatable.

Nice session amidst lovely scenery Chris. Are there not a lot of ticks in that bracken? Pity about the GoPro setting, yes we have all done that! I once accidentally recorded a nice time-lapse of me fishing the local river! It was useless. These days once the camera is set up I lock the screen and leave it. Bloody annoying when you accidentally change the settings. 😁😁
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
Never given ticks a thought Fred, but I suspect there will be some. Hopefully, the waders will protect me? I've been using the camera at work for some promotional videos and didn't change it back. I can confirm that your suggestion of proxy files worked 👍

Hi Chris, a lovely video - reminded me of my last trip just the week before yours! Can I ask where you were fishing - we spent our time on the Cherry Brook and West Dart (downstream from Two Bridges)? Cheers

Hi Robert, I've just been watching your video in preparation for a trip to cherrybrook (ashamed to say I've never fished it). If you register on the Devon Rivers forum, then I can send you some details about the stream in a private message👍 there's a recent post about fishing cherrybrook that you could add your experience to devonrivers.proboards.com/thread/1424/hours-on-cherrybrook
