Using our 1150R to recovery a tractor/trailer that jack-knifed and went through the barrier cable system during a heavy storm. One of the drivers jumped out of the truck during the crash, but survived with only minor injuries. The high winds made this a "tricky" recovery.

No offense intended but I'm a retired police officer in Florida and I have to say. FL would never allow a tow truck service to have operating emergency lights and sirens. I mean they aren't even considered first responder so there's no need to be in that much of a rush to get to a scene for tow guys. Its to dangerous to allow un emergency driving trained civilians to do. can't help but laugh every time I see that on your vids. I like them anyway so I'm not downing the vids.
@RonPratt
@RonPratt 4 года назад
I also mean no offense. In your statement, however, you make many assumptions. As you are retired, you may not be aware of a lot of the changes in the industry. First, we are Emergency Services as defined by the state of Missouri: revisor.mo.gov/main/OneSection.aspx?section=304.022&bid=34605&hl=TOW%u2044 There are many towing/recovery companies who DO train and have certifications. I have multiple certifications from my industry, police, fire, and DOT. We are extremely active in our local Emergency Services community. Last week we were called, because of our training and equipment, to assist local FD with recovery of a fatality victim from a semi crash. I won't go into details on here, but we were "hands-on" and welcomed by ALL agencies on scene, which included 2 fire districts, local PD, the county Sheriff, Missouri State Highway Patrol, the County Coroner, and the MSHP Major Crash Investigation Team. I understand you have your work history and I thank you for your service. Please understand that there are PROFESSIONALS in my industry who are willing, trained, and certified. We can be a useful asset in the Emergency Services community, if we can get past the long-held negative view of our industry. Granted, I do not agree with every towing/recovery company being allowed to perform the same services as we do. We have taken the time, effort, and expense of investing in equipment, personnel, and training. I don't understand why you would laugh at that??? Respectfully, Ron Pratt

Every minute that wreck is on the road increases the chances of secondary accidents. So getting tow trucks to the scene ASAP is a good way to prevent others from being hurt and tying the road up for longer periods. Maybe FL should rethink their rules on letting tow trucks use emergency lights. Especially considering how high of a non attentive older drivers you have on the road. Heck most don't even notice their turn signals are on while parked in the left lane.
@caasiwms
@caasiwms 4 года назад
@@RonPratt I am thankful that their are trained professionals such as yourself who can be trusted by local law enforcement agencies and other first-responders to run code. Most people don't realize it, but in terms of accidents, especially on the freeway, the longer there is a blockage or any type of hazardous situation, the greater the risk of secondary accidents. Also, you never know what other situations may be going on that are being impeded by an accident. What if first-responders are on their way to a house fire or shooting, but they cannot get there because the road is blocked due to a wreck? How about a medical transport bringing a needed blood transfusion or organ transplant to a hospital? Wreckers should ABSOLUTELY be considered first responders and be able to run code. Also, it is my experience (at least in Michigan) that running amber/white lights (like tow trucks and road work crews do) gets far less of a response in traffic than first responders running red/blue lights. Traffic is much more likely to slow down and move over for a stopped police car than a stopped tow truck. This translates to a much higher safety risk to the wrecker operator. Even if it was just while on scene, the ability to run red/blue lights would greatly increase roadside safety for tow trucks in my opinion. As always, I am amazed at your professionalism and kindness, and your speed and efficiency when dealing with situations. You are an inspiration to a young truck driver like myself. Keep up the good work! God bless and be safe, praying for you and your crew into this new year!

I drove OTR for 35 years and in that time I worked for two HD Wrecker comps. One in "New Dirty (New Jersey)" and the other down in Bama. I will say that 99.8% of the time a empty trailer is a blessing (That other 0.02% ya just gotta live with 😁)". That wind was giving you a fit for a moment there. Oh!, and one other thing... When you were backing up between the truck and the passing traffic, you could've made it through there if you had twice as much room 🤣!!! Love the videos Sir.

When I drive by a scene like this I don't think much of it. I take a split second to say a prayer that everyone is alright, then keep going. To an average eye this would seem like a usual scene, but due to the high winds, combined with the need to lift the trailer (WITH traffic, bear in mind), and the trailer being tangled in the barrier cables, this is trouble. I now understand a little better just how rough tow operators have it when they have to respond to a scene like this. I am so sorry you have to deal with situations much, much worse than this one, Ron. You are an amazing man and I am moved almost to tears with how professional you handle your calls like this.

Plus, it’s cool he’s learning the family business from the ground up. Was surprised to hear the woman driver bailed. But then thought, if I was in her shoes, what would I have done?! Guess it’s not fair to judge another’s reactions if we haven’t been in the same type of situation ourselves. Thank you for sharing and as always, Godspeed.

Makes me want to go out and order a new rotator everytime I watch you in action with yours. Even on this job which was tricky due to the high winds, it worked great and it saves soo much time. I've got ramps that I've built just for situations as this. However, by the time I got them in place and re- hooked a couple of times, I would have spent far more time and had to have blocked the road for at least a few minutes at the rear of the trailer while I set the ramps and slid it back onto the highway. BTW, that would have taken more than one total reset. I've resisted a rotator because of it's initial overwhelming cost, the fact that I didn't think it would work well on narrow mountain roads, and I'm getting old, just as my beloved Holmes 850 is. Oh, don't get me wrong, I have other, "pretty" recovery trucks that actually do most of the work around here. "Grand pa" and the "ole 850" only go out on the bad ones, where experience and "grunt" is needed. GOD Bless and thanks for the video

Man, that truck amazes me every time I see it in action! Amazing power! I know it was an empty trailer, but still. :) Your work ethic says alot about you, Ron - all good of course! You are genuinely concerned about your fellow man - that is a breath of fresh air in this day and age, let me tell you! You push yourself as hard as you can, so that others can get off the road as soon as possible, for their safety. Lots of respect from me - you have the soul of a warrior. :) I know how much all that rigging weighs - I pulled a winch cable out of a heavy truck 100' to retrieve my recycling truck that nearly went through someone's house, after sailing down a short 14% grade on glare ice in the city. I know that stuff cannot be easy to toss around! I don't mean to bring down the mood here, but I have to ask a big favor, knowing you are a man of deep faith - I just got news today that my mom's cancer has returned with a vengeance - it has spread through her whole body - bones, organs, everything. She's already beat it once, but this sounds really bad to me. The doctors say it is still treatable, although I feel in my gut this may not be the case. If you could say a prayer for her, I'd appreciate it. Typing through blurry eyes ... God has saved her once - hopefully He will decide it's not her time just yet. Thank you, Ron - we love you.

First time in 46 yrs driving that I heard of a driver bailing out and having it work out for them! Remember back when I was 17 (last Wed I turned 63) coming into N edge of London Ontario, truck sitting in field. Could see the tracks were it run off road to were it sat. It missed a billboard by only few feet. Driver that valid out didn't though. Never bail out! Especially a Volvo with it's integral brush cage! She is lucky to be alive!!! As always Ron Pratt, thanks for reminding us to drive safe. 😷

Hi Ron: Very nice and safe removal, even in the wind. The truth is Guardrail and cable stay guardrail is not intended for 18 wheel trucks and buses. The 42" tall median barrier is the only safety item that will keep a truck or bus on the highway. The Barrier that you see most of the is only 32"tall and trucks can climb up on it or break thought . I designed Interstate highways for 40 years. I enjoy your clean show and that you are a christian.
@RonPratt
@RonPratt 6 лет назад
I'm not as educated about the cable systems as you. I have seen the ones in our area perform remarkably. Of course they destroy anything that comes into contact with them... Thankfully this truck did not meet oncoming traffic when it went through. I was surprised that it went through until I noticed that it broke through where the cable system anchors and transitions into the galvanized railing system for the bridge. I am very pleased that you appreciate my family-friendly format. Thanks for watching and God bless.

The tire lift came with the truck. I just don't use it very often, because it is heavy and cumbersome. The truck I had prior to this truck also had a tire lift. They are very useful, but they also have their drawbacks. First, as I stated, they are heavy and cumbersome. Second, they have a poor weight distribution. On the rotator, the weight distribution isn't as much of an issue as it would be on a 25 or 35 ton towing/recovery unit. On the positive side, once the main beams are in place, the hookup is quite simple and quick. There are certain trucks and buses that require the use of a tire lift to be towed. As always, thank you for your input and God bless.

Daggum, those are some stout "L Bars"! (yes, you are correct, this is the first video I've seen, where you use the tire lift), time is of the essence! The Driver JUMPED OUT!?!?!?!? Wow, incredible!!! Yep, that Cold Front was "something else"... I replaced the clutch in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler, prior to that Cold Front coming through Kansas City. As always Ron, another fine example of a Safe Recovery, and a great video overall!

WOW! Sounds like this crash can go on those videos "And they walked away". I do not think I would have jumped out. I think I would have stayed buckled in and assume I would live. That driver must have been in fear of there life. To choose to jump or bail out. Nice work on your part Ron. Even with the wind being so strong every thing seemed to go good for you. I also like how you try to get the job done and get off the roadways asap. Good safe practice/procedure.

A smallish van ran off the M23 (here in the UK!) a few months ago, just into bushes at the side of a four-lane stretch. Clever police shut ALL FOUR LANES and diverted all the traffic somewhere else, causing havoc... Why they couldn't work in two lanes I've got no idea... Health & Safety I suppose!!

Jake, watching Ron do what he does really makes you wonder about the others that have huge rotators and all the extra gear but can't seem to do anything near what Ron does with that one truck. And has anybody ever noticed that we NEVER see "OMG! Armagadden!" moments in any of his videos? Very professional in ever way, no phony stunts in his videos.

I shouldn't be critical of another driver, but anyone who decides to bail out of a truck while it's moving is obviously not properly buckled in. I could say more about bailing out, but I think I've said more than enough already. Nice work, Ron. In addition to a nice bath for the rotator, do your straps get a nice scrub-a-dub after they get all filthy and muddy on some of these jobs? Not to mention your work wear... Mike definitely got the dirty end of the stick on this one, doing all the underneath work. Two thumbs up. Safety first !

My god! You're so efficient. I wish the OPP here in Ontario were as demanding as the police are in the southern states for clearing a wreck. Here in Ontario, that would have been a 4 to 6 hour road closure. I love your videos.... please keep posting. Some day here in Ontario, they might get what it means to clear a wreck in minimal time. You're awesome Keep doing what you do and come up here to Ontario to teach the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police and Ontario wrecker drivers what it means to be efficient. We need folks like you to show them how it's done!).Great job once again. Keep up the great work! Love you guys!... God bless. PS.... Love that you've got Mater on your DB.... so cool!

vetterfellow it's the highway patrols policy and best interest to keep the road open whenever possible. On top of that rotators are designed specifically with that in mind, to recover accidents while maintaining the flow of traffic as safely as possible
@RonPratt
@RonPratt 6 лет назад
vetterfellow I didn't take it personally when they asked. I have worked and trained with most of the people that were on that particular scene. There were multiple incidents on both sides of the interstate at the same time and their resources were stretched thin. Also, they must report in to dispatch with updates so they were asking me so that they could determine where their resources could be transitioned if needed. They know that our team will do a good job. I simply took it as part of a necessary information exchange. I can see how it may come across as rude or brash, but I know these guys and that was not their intention. Thanks and God bless.

hi Ron , great jobs on your channel, i volunteer for first response here for search and rescue (USAR). don't do M,V,A but train with fire, and have been in the comms unit to see how hard it is for them. for those that watch, to get to the point. first responders have to give sit reps back to comms as they are the eyes to those in control back in the comms room controlling the whole of the area. when you get your head around that the scene is run from a remote communication centre normal part of multiple jobs at the same time and all they have to go on is those radio calls to make decisions and apply resources. so the question can be direct and to the point, as radio chat has to be short to keep radio channels free. anyway, I'm ranting and it was just headsup to your viewers, PS last thing to blow me away was on a flood welfare job, team had stopped for a coffee in a small town isolated by flood water (we there to help locals), lady in the cafe shouted the team coffee and pie, its unbeleavable how generous people can be!!
