Highbury Fields Forever - walk from Homerton to Highbury Barn via Hackney, Dalston & Newington Green shot in 4K

This walk from East to North London starts on Homerton High Street. We take a look at the Tudor Sutton House built in 1535, before walking through St. John's Gardens to Hackney Central. Along Mare Street we ay homage to the Hackney Empire, designed by Frank Matcham in 1901 as a Music Hall. Our walk takes up Graham Road to Ridley Road Market, Dalston and then along Kingsland Road to the Rio Cinema. Next we go up John Campbell Road and Mildmay Road to Newington Green where we look at Richard Price's Unitarian Chapel built in 1701. From here we pass along Ferntower Road to Petherton Road where the New River runs beneath a green strip of land running along the middle of the street. Highbury New Park takes us to Highbury Grove and we turn up Baalbec Road to Highbury Place. Highbury Fields is one of my favourite spots in London, a beautiful open space covering a high ridge of land which was once known for its springs and conduits. We walk around Highbury Fields contemplating the possibility that the name suggests that this was once the location of an ancient burial mound or barrow given that the area was previously known as Newington Barrow. Our walk ends at Highbury Barn at the site of the former pleasure garden famed for its milk, custards, and concerts.

Wonderful video which really brings back memories to me as I was at school in Homerton in the 1960s and used to do the journey between home (Dalston) and the school four times a day. I used to rush (and I mean rush!) home for lunch- the dash along Sutton Place, through the churchyard to Mare Street to get a bus along Graham Road to Dalston (child fare 2d!). Those were the days, and this video brought them all back.

Aaah Homerton and Dalston. Great memories from when I lived there, also in the early 90s. Definitely agree that it took an age to get out of Hackney to go elsewhere in London.

We used to call it front line lol Oh man..I used to live on Newington Green..Mildmay..Cromwell lived there..all the back ally's behind the shops connected..I played pool in the Turkish cafés... My kids loved Highbury fields..the park and water feature..the pulley and the sand pit..seven steps bagels..I worked there lol wow flash back..I could tell you a thousand stories 💞

Watching this as an ex pat who once lived in Highbury pk opposite Addington mansions. Left in 1975 aged 15, nice to see my old stomping grounds. Memories of my late Father waiting for me outside St Joan of Ark primary school, then walking to the Lido in Highbury fields for an evening swim, 10 pence admission. The bike shop opposite the school where i bought a new one for 6 pounds in 1970. Going to watch the Gunners in the old stadium and an evening chipper meal from beside the Barn pub. Walking to Highbury Grove when older and having Rhodes Boyson as head master. Fishing in Clissold pk and the solo walk home through the spooky lane. Lovely memories altogether long live Highbury.

Once again, this video ends at my favorite time of day in this series of walks. At dusk when the street lamps are coming on and the lights are visible in people's windows. I can't help but think how beautiful it all is and what those folks might be doing - sitting down to supper or watching TV or reading their kids a story. Some of the architecture is lovely - more than it has a right to be. Old houses and apartments built centuries ago, are weather-worn and grey, yet they look so warm and inviting. Thanks to John, we get to see these sights and hear about these areas that we otherwise would never know about - even know existed. Wonderful stuff.

That was enjoyable. The bit I really knew was Dalston market. Would get taken there from Leyton, on a single decker bus by my mother in the mid 1960s. Ravel Shoes had one of their first shops in Dalston I recall!

Great video Thanks. I lived on Holloway road in the 60s ( next door to what is now the court) and then moved to Copenhagen street. Went to Hackney tech after leaving Maggits school on Penton rise. Now live in Bulgaria, so these are great to watch, my old manor. I was a van boy on the Evening News, my run started at Penton Rise and finished at Highbury corner. RIP Manzies at Chap.

Mate this video is so nostalgic for me. I'm from Stoke Newington and I had a mate who lived on Greenwood Road off Graham Road. And I went to school at Canonbury primary school, the whole Highbury Barn segment of this video take me back! Thanks for bringing back good memories of North London. 🙂

what a great video, made me laugh when you stated the Arse have nothing to do with Highbury haha....anyway back in the day I used to walk to see my Club, Tottenham from St Pancras, there were several ways I could go but I remember walking down to Tottenham from Dalston on many occasions, used to have a Pie n Mash shop on the High St Dalston, not forgetting I could rarely walk past a decent looking Pub without going in for a quick Beer, no wonder I started walking at around 09.00 hours to get to White Hart Lane for a 15.00 kick off...Happy Days, yes John the History, love it so much, keep the videos coming.

Thanks Michael. I did read that about St. Augustine's tower but then it didn't give a date only that it was early 16th Century(same period as Sutton House). However at least one person in the comments here has said that it's much older than that.

@@JohnRogersWalks there’s been a church on the site since the 13th century at least, but the tower would have been extended upwards in 16th century. Used to teach children about changing Hackney in that tower! I really enjoy the walks you do especially of new and old haunts of mine. You always seem to go a different way than my routes.

Thanks for another great walk, John. When I left school in '87 my first job was at the Hackney Gazette on Kingsland Road. So many fond memories from that period and this brought them flooding back! You're certainly right about the Hackney Empire seemingly being under perpetual threat. I remember attending a Billy Bragg benefit gig there in 1988 (for the princely sum of a fiver!)

Fantastic walk My mother's family were Hackney born Well Street pre war My aunt moved to rent in Graham Road before moving to Enfield Saturdays in my early teens spent walking the market of Ridley road and highlight of pie mash and liquor Jellies eels scared the life out of me Mum used to tell tales of seeing famous acts at the Empire pre and post war and hiding under the seats so that they could see the second and third performances for free

Homerton Grove Adventure Playground is just behind St Barnabus Church where the film started. This was begun as a community occupation of bombed land in 1969 for the purpose of children's play and involved some of the people who started Chats Palace. A local man paid for a JCB to clear the site of rubble, still piled in two humps on the site. It was a squat until it received the first Lottery grant in Hackney and the Lottery demanded a lease before they'd release the money. The first anarchist club in the land was upstairs at The Lamb on Homerton High St, which no longer exists, although Lamb Lane does. Sutton House, during it's 'derelict' phase was a squatted community centre offering gigs, cinema, cafe and theatre. The National Trust has preserved a 'squatters room' and a mural. In St John's churchyard at the crossing of the footpaths there is a small metal sign on the railing which says 'Round these parts for many years was seen Blind Fred. A sunny soul'. It also says it in braile.

Ooh brilliant. From here, in East London, E5 to where my sister used to live in Newington Green was a walk I used to do daily (actually I was living in Graham road at the time but had a boyfriend in Chatsworth road) I used to walk up Navarino Road and up to the back of Ridley Road, Cross over at Dalston and walk up one of the roads on each side of the railway to Cannonbury. Sutton Place is one place I would love to live! those houses with their shutters etc are beautiful as is St Johns Churchyard and the little secret or walled herb garden. I was watching Modern History channel and Jason, the Knight, was saying things called The Ship or Ship street which are not geographically near anything nautical are remnants of the old Compost collectors from Medieval tines but they changed a letter or two as our sensibilities have changed over the centuries lol! Highbury Barn is where a friend of mine lives and I always tended to walk everywhere and once youre at Finsbury Park or Highbury if coming from W1, youre basically the most part of the way home from the West End. I used to really enjoy walking from Soho to Hackney and used to do it weekly. I think its about time I started again as your fitness takes a massive hit if you cant go for long walks. Once the lockdown is over I am starting walking again as I dont like the idea of Public Transport post Covid.

Seeing the Empire reminded me that the last time I went in person to get a copy of my Birth Certificate was to Hackney Town Hall, almost next door! Oh yes - and guess who's parents got married in that same Town Hall? Was born not too far from where you ended the walk; Woodbury Grove off Seven Sisters Road.

In the midst of all the mad rush to throw up huge office blocks by developers, what a treat to see Georgian terraces in all their splendor. Tremendous too to see a Tudor house, Sutton House still standing and now preserved for future generations. Hope the Hackney Empire survives-too few theatres outside large city centres but we have one in Martinsburg which is AmDram but we are proud of it. Thanks very much John.

There was a Lido at Highbury Feilds near to Highbury corner...I lived by the Junc of Southgate rd and Balls pond rd until 1963

In the 50’s and ‘60’s if you went for a swim before 9am, it was free admission - tolerable as a kid in the summer if the sun was out. The water temperature was always written on a small chalk board by the turnstile gates - Fahrenheit only. Never higher than upper 60’s that early. Learnt to swim there. Very dangerous diving board - eventually removed - as the deep end was only just over 6 feet deep.

You walked right past my front door on homerton High Street. Tha graffiti covered block is being pulled down and replaced with a 12 storey building. There was a petition by local residents to make it lower but of course, we were ignored. Great walk! Nice vid.

21.30 Established in 1888 The Mildmay Club and Institute Union is one of the few surviving working men’s clubs in London. Grade 2 listed.

Foreign Mission's Club - great place to stay near Highbury Fields, which you walk through back and forth from the tube station. Highbury Baptist Church, beside the Fields - lovely people, and here's a great tip - if you're staying in that locale and need to get to Heathrow, get yourself to Arsenal station which is nice and quite (except on match days!) and a lovely way to ease out of London and prepare yourself for the looooong journey back home to New Zealand! cheers John, John.

You mentioned the lottery for hard to let council housing. Back in the early 80s i slept the night outside the council offices in Hackney in February to get into one of these lotteries. We were lucky enough to get a maisonette on the 7th floor of a block on the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs. It was fantastic with views across London . From the front balcony we could see the Greenwich Naval College. The Isle of Dogs would be a good place to do one of your walks.

Having just consulted The London Encyclopedia I think Sutton House followed by St Augustine's are, as you say contenders for oldest building in Hackney and 52-55 Newington Green, which you glanced at, goes back to 1658.....above a great cobbler's shop. Lovely video with some great memories for me, as I grew up in Canonbury, which is very close to Highbury Fields. It would be nice, if you could, to do a walk around Canonbury as there are some wonderful buildings and history there, including the Tower theatre, a house in Canonbury Square George Orwell lived in, and you can walk up Upper Street to the Regents Canal, and Chapel Market. You mentioned the new river, you were not that far from New River Walk.... Just off Essex Road. When you were in Highbury Grove, you passed the school. It's a very modern building nowadays, but still has the old columns (for wont of a better word) of the original Highbury County school, which then became Highbury Grove. Parts of four weddings and a funeral were filmed at Highbury Fields, and the singer Sade used to live in a house in fieldway crescent (I think it was) and used to see her around a bit. Also, the football pitch at the top, I used to play football on with Tony Hadley and Steve Norman from Spandau Ballet on!! Subscribed!!

Kingsland high rd does indeed have some great cafes. One of my favourites is Kingfisher cafe on a corner almost opposite Ridley Rd. Old school English grub, really really nice. No airs and graces, but proper food. Speaking of Ridley Road, who remember's the bagel shop on the corner?

Highbury Fields was my Ponderosa in the sixties, from the cinder pitch down to the swings, paddling pool and open air pool. The pool was freezing even in the height of summer. You are right about the Italians, my grandad moved up to Holloway. Enjoyed your walk.

Highbury, my Highbury. The green plaque on the side of the pub (20:13) commemorates the Peasants Revolt of 1381 and Wat Tyler's attack on the local Manor. Leigh Road lost most of its old buildings to a 2000 kilo bomb in WWII, another failed attempt to destroy the Cossor radio factory, which was a centre for radar manufacture during the war; the Film School opposite was the old head office. Most of the bombed sites in the area (Gardner Court, by the pub; where the "new" buildings are in Grosvenor Road, Highbury Crescent and Fieldway Crescent etc) were missed attempts on Cossor.

Thank you John so many places that were pivotal in my early life, Highbury has always been a magical place , Highbury Gardens , Fields and Barn a wonderful place to wander through and around, Ridley road with my mum and Dad in the fifties and sixties, Newington Green, The Hackney Empire and the Rio oh yes shows, gigs and films, and you touched upon the New River , made my day , I love all your videos but that was really special and nice,thank you so much, take care my friend , see you soon .....

I like the way you point out so many different archictectural styles. Some of these I can directly relate to--there are buildings of identical type here in Vancouver. Also common to my immediate neighbourhood is our own Rio Theatre, a venue saved from developers by the domnations of ordinary people all over North America.

Another interesting walk from you John with plenty of information as I'm so much into history I was mostly from Stepney Bow And Poplar before moving to MK but do know some areas of Hackney and Dalston quite well but learnt a few more things tonight. Thanks for an interesting walk.👍

Shut in 1987, and later converted into flats. Tasmania more beautiful but does it have £5 loaves of sourdough and £8 bottles of craft beer?😄

@@w00df0rd Its got $8 loaves sour dough and $8 bottles(375ml)of craft cider....which is why i bake n brew my own also had 50,000 salmon break out of net the weekend so crazy fishing carnival going on every man and his rod!...thanks for info...
