You got everything you need to hunt the world over. A powder trickler would speed up your reloading process. Got to love Lee reloading products. Simple inexpensive reloading products. 7mm Mauser and Rifle has been proven to get the job done for over a hundred years.
The 7X57 was my first big game rifle and now 30 plus years later i still have it. Even though this cartridge is 130 years old it can still take most any game on the planet. Thank you for posting.
love this round, and thanks for posting this. I must say that I am spoiled after watching you weigh each charge, because I use the rcbs power trickler. it's worth every penny lol. I also invested in just a neck sizer for my Mauser. It dropped my grouping considerably.
I have been working on a custom 7x57 built by my father when he was in gunsmith school. I just had the barrel removed and some work done on the head space to correct it. Now I am working on a pet load and I believe I will also need to buy a neck sizing die. I am glad to hear it reduced group size for you. Of all the firearms I have and reload for the 7x57 is my favorite.
I started out like that loading for my 223 243 7mm08. It helps to bolt your press to a board then you can use C clamps to put it on to any table. I have to say good shooting and happy hunting
Woww !! Exelent video , I just got a sporterized german made chilenian mauser, just order the reloading dies, Can't wait to shoot it , this info is gold for me , Tanks a lot !!
Thanks man, it really helped me , its simple an acurate i and you can really fell each pellet, i prefer ir rather than my trikler i sold it to buy other suplies , thanks again
I've always wanted to get into reloading. With the ammo shortage now it might be a good time to do so, but then I was told you can't get bullets either. Oh well.
You should have gotten into reloading before any shortage. I was clever enough to choose my most often used firearms and purchase enough components to last the remainder of my life when obama was first elected. Now with liberals in charge you may never see components again.
I can get Bullets and powder. Primers are hard to find still for me but they are trickling in. Hornady discontinued the 162 AMax in favor of the ELD, I think.
I kinda wanna build 7x57 ai. Favorite soft nose is swift a frame 160 grain. That be my go to elk load. Its my go to in 7mm08. Have played with the 162 eld only shot ground squirrels with it
Perhaps, if you'd have " carded" a over filled scoop, you'd discovered a closer weight. They are mission specific tools, and maybe you wouldn't have had to go to " reinventing" that which should have been much closer.....
I just picked up a sporter 7x57 mauser that i been working up loads for first time hunting with it in a few months wished i could hunt where your at to give the old girl a challenge but here in Alabama longest shot i have took was 200 yards btw whats the green tape for?
I've been wanting to get a reloading setup for my 1916 7x57 Spanish Mauser, that stuff ain't cheap, but I haven't been able to find any information on where to even get started.
I still have yet to find anything, a few months ago i found a website finally that DID have some up to date ammo for it, but of course, it was gone in a flash and no longer being sold.
Hey Scott, just revisited your reloading videos after a few years, as I'm starting to reload myself now , - cheers for having made these. Are you and the 7x57 still Going strong over in NZ, and have you changed your reloading method since then, or is this still your MO? Regards, Claus
What is your rifle? Great vid there, I'm at the other end though - an old BSA Viscount mauser 7x57 & no idea which problem is causing my inability to shoot it consistently. Ammos only 1 of the possibilities (among barrel wear, ugly bore finish, flinch + 1951 manufacture) but I hope to get to do some reloading as I've always been keen to do some and make it part of the elimination and or improvement process for the old cannon. Liked how your vid outlines the main steps in the process start to finish , thanks heaps again for the vid, great.
TamatiKeri Rogerson Thanks. My rifle shot really badly until I had it properly bedded. Now shoots really good. It's a Parker Hale Safari Deluxe (1960s I think)
scott. awesome video bec of homemade tickler & underweight powder charge. my ?: for 7mm RM & wanted to reduce recoil by using less powder but someone said that going below min powder charge is dangerous. but your video contradicts this. is that true or a myth. second, if i got LEE classic reload for 7mm rm, is that okay in terms of low runout? third, is using lee precision powder dipper a good sub for the Lee powder measure?
Andre Isis Hi Andre. My powder charge is actually over-weight if you go by the manuals, however I have ensured it's safe in my rifle. But it's still a slow bullet compared to many these days, because it's a heavy bullet in a smallish calibre. I have no idea if it's unsafe to go below minimum powder weight, but if you go too low then you may as well swap the magnum for somehting like a 7mm08. Alternatively a supressor takes away lots of the recoil as well as the noise. Highly recommend one. Don't know about runout sorry, but as for powder measure v dipper I don't really use either except to get reasonably close to powder weight - the final weight is always determined by weighing on scales. I could just as easily use a kitchen spoon instead of a dipper. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.
Scott Tulloch yeah it does. but in canada we are not allowed suppressors & muzzle brakes are not appreciated in ranges. so reason for reduced recoil. how would you use a kitchen spoon to get weights. is there trick like you did for the trickler. i didnt want to blow $ unless i really liked reloading.. maybe do a video using spoon as well. ps : love the way you edit & put details via words. i hate utubers talking ie audio too loud or too soft
Andre Isis The whole reloading setup I use cost me NZD$200, plus $60 for the dies. It's a Lee Anniversary set I think - includes scoop, scales, powder thrower, press, primer feeder
Scott Tulloch was going to get lee classic reload for 7mm RM[no 7mm-08] for US$28.99. figured out a way to get chamber length for bullet seating using a chopstick & modified case vs paying C$41.95 for hornardy OAL gauge..was going to approximate powder using the kitchen measuring spoons..reduced danger by lowering powder charge but ADI in their website states not to go less than 75% of min charge. ... paid US$75 for used concentricity gauge to measure runout[if bullet is straight or not] bec using lee classic reload. how are you doing neck tension? practice using factory reduced recoil bullets but wanted to build my own loads for long range shooting. you use be aware of nathan forster as a kiwi?
The first thing is find a reloading manual and read it. Then read it again. It will supply you the information you need to load ammunition. Having a friend that already reloads and has done it for a while can really help. When you first get started you will find reloading to be tool intensive. In this video it doesn't really get into case preparation which is the most tedious part of reloading but vitally important and requires some tools.
I prefer Luger America, RCBS or Redding dies... Lee seating dies are sloppily made...The ONE EXCEPTION is Lee's factory crimp die is well worth having.
Some hunters crimp mostly for semi auto, heavy recoiling, tube mag or if using & seating to a cannelure on the projectile. If you are getting good neck tension feel & Lee dies are not that, off the mark, you will never see a benchrest shooter do it.
Here's a thought. Since you own a Lee breechlock press, why not buy the breechlock bushings and stop marking all over your dies like a 4 yr old with a box of crayons? May even get better results.
Because I already have bushings so have no need for further expenditure, because the system works to produce a very consistent sub MOA load, and because I was able to stop marking all over my bushings like a 4 year old child immediately after marking them correctly several years ago. There's a thought.
