Powder Mountain is one of the crown jewels of Utah skiing. Absolutely massive and with strict limitations on visitor numbers makes this a resort with a guaranteed experience, even on holiday weekends. A place where you can find a powder stash days after the storm, and where you never have to worry about standing in line.
Well...at least that used to be the case. Sadly, new ownership means new rules, and as of 2024 the Powder Mountain that we all know and love has passed away. Replaced by another profit-first corporate monster determined to milk every single dollar out of it's customers by any means necessary. Sacrificing skier enjoyment for profit is the flavor du-jour in the ski industry, and Powder Mountain is simply it's latest victim.
Join TJOLT Creative Director Nate Luebbe as he explores Powder Mountain during it's last season before corporate greed scrubbed the charm from this mom-and-pop ski hill. Consider this our retrospective for what used to be, a eulogy to another independent ski resort that fell victim to American Capitalism.

Have you ever skied Powder Mountain? How do you feel about the recent changes?

Not crazy about Netflix guy (Reed Hastings) buying Pow Mow and some of the proposed changes coming our way (Marys for billionaires - I mean "private use" only) but there really is no better resort I know of for now -- I mean... GO TO COLORADO! It's waaaaaaaaaaaay better snow! ;)

Learned to ski here in the 70's. It was the first resort in Utah to allow snowboards back in the very early 80's. There was nothing like skiing the 'back side' to the canyon bus stop. So many great memories. I have a severe amount of trepidation about the changes coming due to the new ownership. I'm fearing it will be a far cry from it's origins.

You know the old “you never swim in the same river twice because it’s not the same river and it’s not the same person” ? I would argue the same for PowMow, or any ski hill really. (Yes, ok some of the smaller ones with no backcountry gates/under 1000 acres *possibly* not applicable.) Anyway, from night skiing (that’s 8am-8pm!) on Sundown, Woodys World Bus Rides, James Peak boot packs (to each their own PAYING for snowcat rides when you can earn your turns), getting lost and having to hoof it back to Marys lift, a lot of that will never happen again, and I just visited last winter. Ofc the new lifts will be great (if you’re a mega wealthy snobby ski brat) and you have to take management at their word re: keeping visitor numbers down but stuff like Uncapping the amount of season passes (now you just have to pay more) doesn’t bode well for them. While they never should have left the Indy Pass imo, Powmow in my book is in the ABasin and Little Ski Hill (McCall) league re: it’s got a community of people that will Never EVER forget it/love it until they die and for good reason. It remains to be seen what Greed Hastings will do with the place/how terrible it will be a decade from now (aka Vail and Stevens Pass, Ikon with Schweitzer come to mind) we all have no choice but to take mountain ops’ word that they’ve told us so far on IG. Sorry for the soliloquy ELI5: 🤔, TBD 🤬☹️ #powmowforlife #baldyforever

Couldn't agree more. The history is there and a DIE HARD contingent of people who will always love the mountain (myself included). Gone are the days of it being a quiet little hill forgotten amongst the giants of the Wasatch, but hopefully some of the charm remains.

True dat. PowMow will be a 'thing' to me, but likely only in memory. Breaks my heart TBH.

Meh. It’s just a matter of time. They’ll all be swallowed up. When A-Basin sold out to Alterra I knew. The “soul” of skiing has a d at the end. Resistance is futile.
