The traditional method of measuring a film's success through its box office gross has its limitations. The unadjusted list of top-grossing films is not a reliable indicator of a film's success over time as it does not consider the effects of inflation and rising ticket prices. Even adjusting for inflation does not fully address the issue, as ticket prices and inflation do not necessarily parallel each other. Another factor that complicates the measurement system is the release of films in different formats with varying ticket prices. Social and economic factors also impact the number of people purchasing theatre tickets. Despite these limitations, the film industry continues to use unadjusted grosses as a marketing tool, making it unlikely for a more robust analysis to be adopted.
