Years ago in '79, I was a 17-year-old high school senior, 6-3 with a 33-inch vertical and back then, that was something in my neck of the woods. Walked around with ankle weights all day to help me get there. David Thompson was my favorite player. Later that year in Navy boot camp my company had about 40-50 kids in it, mostly from the inner city. The irony is in the boot camp Olympics (I guess that's what they called it back then), I represented my squad in the standing broad jump. The brothers loved it. Said they'd never seen a white guy jump like that. Those military years playing basketball all over the globe were tough times but fun times. I balled against international players long before their reputations finally made it stateside. Anyways...the training and technology available today to help these kids reach unprecedented levels of athleticism is off the charts. Good for them and kudos for you guys helping 'em to get there. It's tough doing it alone.
@rickharris4513
@rickharris4513 2 года назад
Saw David Thompson in high school, he performed his greatest leaps in high school, no question about it. According to kids from his school, he did lots of one legged squats standing on a elevated surface with around 115 pounds. Lots of reps. World class long jumpers also train this way. I always believed that Larry Brown tried to throttle down his leaps to what was needed to accomplish the job, concerned about the cumulative effect of those landings. When I saw him play as a pro he never attempted go to the heights he routinely reached as a prep or freshman at NC State. It seemed that way to me. He injured his knee during off-season training and never seemed quite the same afterwards. To me, anyways.

Interesting how low the reach is on some of these guys. I'm 6'1.5" to 6'2" and I can just touch the ceiling in most homes where the standard height is 8 ft or 96 inches. While my wingspan is longer than my height by 2-3 inches, my arms aren't that long. Tells you that a lot of these guys are inflating their verticals by minimizing their reach on these tests.

You can guess accurately their actual jump height in comparison to the rim if you get the distance between the back of the rim and front of the rim and subtract that from the top of the jumper's head at their peak height to nullify the "angle illusion" - that's where their head would actually be, in this case his head would still be way above the rim - pause at 2:00 ish when he's at his highest and try my above trick

Imo on that highest jump he did, he would get a higher touch if he was more comfortable with his arms swing movement while he was in the air. I went to check back on the zion vert test, zion was so balance in the air, his upper-body handled the explosiveness extremely well. Nevertheless, 45 to 52, thats insanely unbelievable, i’d love to hear so indept analysis about this leap in vert jump, because i believe there must be some “trade-off” if he was able to gain so much in vertical in such a short time, there should be some changes in “horizontal” performance aspects. Because i once read that quarter squats inc vert but it puts you in some disadvantages in distance running speed,etc. please do some experiment/scientific investigation 👏🏻👏🏻 Cant wait for more crazy stuffs from your channel
@dansysoman3391
@dansysoman3391 3 года назад
I do remember in my prime of vertical jumping (20-21 yrs old) having "those days" where I was feeling super explosive and could jump a legitimate 5-6" higher than any AVG day. I could never explain it. Diet? Rest? Types of physical activity I had done leading up to it? It was like the planets aligned or something. Average day, I would get around 38-39" but on those special days I'd be getting 44-46". Again, I'd measure the exact same way (7'0 standing reach [I'm short] to a 10'10). Do you think Jamal had one of those days like I mentioned? There's gotta be a solid scientific answer for this too just haven't heard of one.

8:17 if you look at this jump the highest point he could reach would be with more extension in his back the slight bend forward at the hips AND at the shoulder took some height away and is likely why he was able to increase his vert from here. More to do with the form of his jump and the placement of the marker.

@Johnrap
@Johnrap 2 года назад
If you take two screenshots of the jumper at apex and put them side by side the athlete's heels at apex are even with his waist when standing on the ground. Another clue, the top of his head at apex is roughly the height of the rim, ten feet. This is also correlated by the 12'2" leaping reach, working backward from arm length. You can also compare him to the height of the coach standing on the ground. Even with the coach crouching down, the athlete's heels only reaches the coach's sternum. This is a roughly 38 inch vertical. Which is an excellent and NBA caliber jump, but not a Guinness world record.

@Fact Check just because there isn't a hard fast rule on how to measure VERTICAL leap. It makes sense that a vertical leap should be measured standing because a running leap entails a vertical but also a HORIZONTAL leap. The ideal vertical leap is all y no x. That's a Newtonian law of motion that one learns in 11th grade physics.

I did saw him one in when he played for the Hurricanes, and it was crazy, in warm up he jumped to show how much of his head could be at rim level, at it was up to his nose.

That's a bad effect, so it is wise to feed the body the nutrients required for the body to make the best quality and strongest and most resilient ligaments and tendons possible. Lysyl oxidase is the enzyme that manages this process, and it is fully activated by bio-copper, which basically requires the ingestion of grass fed/finished beef liver. In addition, cytochrome c oxidase requires bio-copper as well, and if it can't split oxygen to produce H2O and ADP then one's Mg-ATP (cellular energy) might be low. The more access to cellular the energy, the better, especially for people who really push themselves physically. Why why why dont you measure verticals using the vertex of peoples head? For example : if you are 6’ tall and get the top of your head to 10’,That would be an accurate 48” . All that scapular packing stuff would not even matter
@aomana4357
@aomana4357 4 года назад
Then they couldn't cheat their #'s. Also someone 6'2-6'3" is not going to have a standing reach of 7'10.5". It would be closer to 8'2" at least or 98 inches.

AOMan A you can use the net as a measurement scale. Mark the net by inches. Where the top of your head on the net (or above the rim) reaches is the true vertical .

Why not do both? Keep the vertek and register the measurement as a "classic" vert. Do the modern approach, accounting for plantar flexion etc, and call it the "true" vert.

I want to know what makes him so different than other people - physiologically/anatomically speaking. Why can he jump so high compared to literally everyone else? His legs aren't massive. He doesn't LOOK much different than most athletes.

If he tried to dunk, he would be in danger of not being able to reach down far enough to get the ball in the basket.

I played college basketball in the late 80's...we were always taught a true vertical test is 1 step jump off two feet. I will bet he is still around a 1 step 45" tho which is sick but what he did is not a true vertical leap they way we did them. Please test him off one step or no step, then you can say that's his true vertical is...Id be very interested

I could’ve jumped that high if I kept training and didn’t injure myself when I was 10(4’3/4”) I could jump my own height but I came back down one day broke my ankle and since then I barely even run anymore. Lol. Nobody asked but this takes me back I’m 19 btw.

World record breaker and all he need was 3 actually steps. This ain't even his 7 step approach or maybe he doesn't jump that high on a 7 step acceleration. The last two steps hit the floor like a quick cheetah. It's crazy that he only required a 3 step approach for his max vert.

Just imagine what sports would be like 10 or 20 years from now. We are evolving and our athletic abilities are getting better every year, records are breaking every year. I think 10 years from now and a 30 to 40 inch will be considered average.

To get a true accurate measure of vertical jump a person has to tip toe and stretch as high as they can to get a true accurate measure of vertical leap. You cannot give the person tip toe inches because they are not actually off the floor until they jump and reach there maximum before they actually leave the floor.

Hang time on the non slo mo'ed jumps check out On first jump, I got 49.4 inches 48 to 51.5 on second jump 48.4 to 51.7 on third jump 51.7 on 4th jump 52.6 on 5th jump But on his highest 6th jump, it was slo mo'ed... so it's definitely 52 or higher

I'm 6'1.5 without shoes,with a 6'6 wingspan and a 96 inch reach. I'm pretty long for my height. I had about a 40 inch vert when I was younger. That kid has mad hops. One thing I'd definitely say to him is becareful not to over do it with the jumping. No practicing dunking for 45 minutes -1hr or more sessions. The wear and rare definitely catches up to you. Your right those NBA drafts numbers seem off.
