@@BookswithEmilyFox It physically hurt to see the title Twilight being called a classic. NOOOOO. Though I see the "Go back to reading Twilight" or "Go back to reading 50 Shades" comment a lot too... and neither are well written or have any decent concept. The Silent Patient is one of the two most disappointing books I've read in the past few years. I finished it, but only as a hate read where I thought, "This isn't how anything in modern psychiatry works!" every few pages, so I am right with you there. The other insanely popular book I hated was The Martian. Interesting science stuff, zero characters acting like real people. I think I gave both of them 2 stars simply because I finished them. The Shining, however, is my favorite Stephen King. King became popular when I was in my teens so was probably formative in my early taste in horror, and I devoured The Shining in 2 days up at a cottage where everything was extra dark and scary. I am in the minority in not thinking Kubrick's movie version is a masterpiece. Thought the book was a lot better!

Lol I remember seeing the comments under your goodreads review of Dune and I'm still absolutely shocked at some of them. I specifically remember one comment that was like "no, you read it wrong, you're not used to focusing and you don't understand the philosophy" and I'm like what? Since when did book spaces become so entitled? Who the HELL decided that whether a book is good or not is subjective? Who decided that there's only one way to read a book? Book spaces have become increasingly entitled and ignorant. I feel like as adults, we all know most of this is subjective, and there's no such thing as a perfect book. Books cannot be enjoyed by everyone and I don't understand how some people cannot understand this? I've loved some books you've hated and hated some books you've loved. It doesn't mean anything and no one is right here. Grown adult men acting like children when a woman rates their beloved book anything but 5 stars is absolutely insane.

Every reader has different interests, therefore it's important to respect that and not gatekeep popular books. Personally, I didn't like Verity and ACOTAR. I gave Verity a 2.5 stars rating, while I rated ACOTAR with 2 stars. And no, I'll probably won't continue reading the rest of the ACOTAR books, because I wasn't a fan of the writing style, the characters and I was not even invested to the fantasy world. As for Verity, it was a very underwhelming thriller, written in a dull and plain way, with insufferable and dull characters (except Verity who was more interesting) and more sex than plot. Because the way you describe Elizabeth Kolbert is how I feel about Bill Bryson. I find him really crass and abrasive. And I had a similar experience with Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History by Bill Schutt. I loved the book, I thought it was fascinating. But every part of the book with Bill in it, interviewing people, and sharing his little opinions, it irritated me. At one point he described an interview subject's child as "husky." It was so unnecessary. I would have rated it 5 stars if he had just left his personal narrative and thoughts out of it. Schutt still wasn't as bad as Bill Bryson in A Walk in the Woods, though.

As someone who loves character driven stories I also did not enjoy 1984. It was bland amd at times boring even though I do appreciate the ideas behind it. Definitely enjoyed Animal Farm much more. If you haven't read it yet I'd recommend Wool. It's set in a dystopian world and I think it is very engageing with likable characters and an interesting plot.

I haven't read The Riyria Revelations series yet but I would give Michael J. Sullivan's books another chance. The Legends of the First Empire series has really awesome female characters.

I thought it was pretty good, and her saying "most of the female characters are sex workers" is just wrong. There is like 1 that is actually a part of the story (a couple other that get mentioned), and the 2 main female characters are not. And all 3 are strong characters in my opinion.

Well, Dune series (the 6 books) are mainly philosophical, rather than SF/actions books. And Jessica is a normal name, since her child is Paul (another normal name). It is tedious, and not for "modern" readers, who like fast paced books. It is more like a classic novel, maybe in the same category as Ulysses by James Joyce.

I liked the Pricess Bride because of the double narration. To me, it felt like the author started with sweet, hopeful fairy tale, and then the author's bleak personal life started bleeding into the story.

I use The Storygraph rather than Goodreads, but for me, it was Legendborn. 😅 Highly rated but I had such mixed feelings about it. Too many of the reviews felt like they slapped a 5 star on it without taking time to think on it critically. (I loved the main character's personal story as it was organic and drew from the author's own grief; really didn't like the Arthurian stuff as it was choppy, contrived, nonsensical, and just...kind of goofy next to the personal story) I could talk a lot about this and think about it quite often. I do agree with you about so many of these! Especially the Raven Cycle, King books, a lot of Gaiman, etc. I always appreciate that you're straightforward and honest with your reviews, regardless of the overall reviewer opinions. It's really refreshing and cathartic. (Until certain types of men find your reviews...🙃)

I'm glad you made this video cause it is great to know you're not alone in the hate or dnfing of some of these books. I tried the Raven cycle series a few years ago and couldn't even finish the first book. And dnfed both of Sara j mass series so boring. The silent patient wasn't anything special I don't know how it won that year. One book I hate that everyone loves is Behind her eyes. The main character was so dumb and one of my top pet peeves is dumb characters. And recently tried to read My heart is a chainsaw and dnfed that too it had to much stream of consciousness.

I'm so glad you mention It by Stephen King in this video. Previous to reading that, I considered myself a fan of his books. Slogging through the 1200 pages turned it into a hate read for me, and then the SEWER SCENE. OMG. That is the grossest, most unnecessary, most VILE scene I've ever read in a book and it has scarred me. Also the way Beverly was described trough the whole story, kid and adult, was sooooo objectifying and gross. I haven't read a SK book since.

Interesting. We like what we like and don’t have to apologize. I was a lit 29:05 major and really good writing will draw me in. 1984 - there’s a reason for assigning it in high school but I never considered rereading it. On the other hand, I love a good YA series. I read Arc of the Scythe along with my teenage grandson and we both loved it. I’ve never liked Stephen King (with a few exceptions). I also enjoy going back to Golden Age sci-fi, like Asimov, Clarke, early Heinlein, books that seem very “simple” today.

I'm so glad someone else doesn't like Dune 😅 I was so ready to love it that I get a very beautiful edition and huuuu, I was so disappointed. I actually loved like the 2/3 of it but then there's like a jump in time or something like that (don't remember exactly) and you learn the death of a "important" character that you don't know and Paul doesn't look like he cares so I was like "I don't care either" 😂 I completely stoped feeling invested and started being really bored. And I HATED 1984 with passion. Some interesting ideas but awful, AWFUL characters. There's litteraly a point where I thought "my god, I hope they will die".

Do you take into account the period/culture when a book was written? This is (of course) in response to the Forever War. I know it wont change your opinion on the book. Just curious if this is the case for other works/topics as well.
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox Год назад
Of course but I also think it's okay to judge them on a modern lense too. While certain things were frowned upon back in the day, not everyone had issues with it. Heck, there's some positive representation of a lesbian couple in "the count of monte cristo"! I do think we usually can tell if these opinions are shared by the authors or if it's just the character/book but even if it wasn't... it's okay for people to not want to read a book containing homophobia, racism or rape.
@tamerlaaane
@tamerlaaane Год назад
@@BookswithEmilyFox Thanks for the reply! I guess i am giving less importance to the judgement through the modern lense but i fully understand if people do. Also it did not bother me as much as others because i thought the novel did a great job on the feeling of being an alien in your own world/society. It still hurts that you found it boring but hey, at least i wont get mad on GR ;)

my own personal popular goodreads/booktok book that I HATED was saving Noah. it’s about a mother who has a pedophile as a son and idk if the authors intention was to downplay her sons acts and victim blame bc she wants to see the good in her son but the goodreads reviews emphasising with the son is a massive ick (to those who have read it and loved it yes I know the ending and yes I know the plot twist) and a book with that subject matter having a plot twist is so tacky. It made me hate the book even more.

This round there were none that hurt too much (100% agree on Silent Patient and other mystery thrillers - well not everything can be Gone Girl or Kind of Worth Killing). But if you ever felt like it, another mystery thriller recommendation video would be nice. Also I hate when "men"/world makes fun of women reading some smutty (totally consensual) romances, but straight up r@pe in "esteemed" (male) SF books is totally OK. PS: I am still hurting over And then there were none.

Lmao the most dumb commentary I got for not liking a series was for the Dresden Files. And you must understand, all I asked was whether the sexism (which there was so much you wouldn't believe) continued as rampant in the next books (I've read 3) because the magic system was so freaking good I'm still thinking about it. Anyway the commentary straight up made me DNF the series.
