some thermal shielding would make light of it. i don't know that there IS high quality thermal shielding, but it would prevent any problems. i used to drive old muscle cars and big block trucks from the 60's-80's. you could feel the heat of the engine radiating into the cabin through the firewall. driving a new truck with the same size engine, you can't feel a thing. a quick peek under the hood will reveal the insulation they use, and it works pretty good.

My toaster is a 1960s Sunbeam Radiant Control Automatic Toaster! Best $35 ive ever spent at an antique shop. Its literally more automatic than anything on the entire international toaster market today! Even the $350 'smart' toaster in this video still requires you to press buttons and interact. My Sunbeam starts toasting the moment bread is inserted, and toasts to the exact same level no matter if you use frozen or room temp bread! And just like the smart toaster it never pops, it slowly raises and lowers instead

Keep in mind. For the elite gourmet, that level 1-6 is for all type of toastables not just plain bread. And maybe not necessarily fresh either. Maybe level 6 for frozen bagel. You have 1-6 just for bread option on the revolution. So you have more specific controls for what you're toasting with the revolution. For a standard toaster you most likely just leave it on 1/2 for fresh toast and maybe set it higher for things like bagels or frozen items. Not really a fair example of power levels because of this

You could find some "broken" ones on independent resale sites, and typically they're not actually broken. It's things like a broken power cord (which is easy to replace since they're not polarized and the casing is metal) or the nichrome wire has loosened, preventing it from lowering, which is fixable with the turn of a screw. Idk how much time is passing between the tests, but doing multiple 'toasts' one after the other while the heating elements are still hot may also throw off the times and lead to some overdone toasts. I agree with another commenter that the Elite Gourmet may INTEND for you to be toasting 4 pieces at once, which would disperse the heat differently than just 2, and give you some less-done toasts (and also perhaps why it's throwing 2 pieces on the floor if it's weighted to lift up 4 specifically). Just so you know, the Sunbeam "automatic beyond belief" toasters made in the 1950s (through the 90s) used an actual heat sensing mechanism to know the actual temperature of the surface of the bread. So your toast was always exactly the same, even if the toaster was hot from a previous run, and even if you put frozen bread in it. Very few (maybe none?) toasters work like that now.

on the longer slot toasters, you need to go full left or full right as there should be 4 sensors for 4 slices of toast, when you place them in the middle, it doesnt set on any of the sensors unless you are toasting long (rye) bread). Or may have only 1 sensor and that slot (place) should have always (1) slice, and others can go in the other 3 places. EX: left closest to the lever ALWAYS gets 1 slice, slices 2-4 can go anywhere

What he said makes sense, though the timer settings usually more tinkers with the distances between connectors and such, but if the machine is using more complex methods like sensors and not put the bread on one mucks up the timing then it should have come with INSTRUCTIONS to tell you that!

I've never had the Revolution toaster but from this video I would much rather pay a premium price for something like a brevel toaster oven. It can do a whole lot more than make toast and from my experience the results are more consistent and evenly toasted. ~$300 for a smart toaster just seems outrageous, especially when it doesn't have a better toasting system than cheaper models. Hell, even though it only does one slice at a time, for my money I would buy the Mitsubishi TO-ST1-T. Innovative heating design and completely different approach to making toast, not just a screen slapped on a normal everyday toaster. Thanks for the video Freakin' reviews, great content as always; your videos never cease to entertain me.

I really like that $300 toaster for two reasons being that the heating seems to be time based, and that the ejection is soft. I can't count how many times I've had a mini heart attack when a toaster pops the bread up...
@AgentOrange96
@AgentOrange96 2 года назад
The timer would be useful, especially with an audio cue, for a normal toaster, for this reason. But due to the soft ejection, it seems extraneous here. But then, so does the touch screen. I know Technology Connections did a video on a really old soft-eject toaster that used just the expansion of metals to accomplish the job. I've also seen another modern version without a touch screen at an AirBNB I stayed at, but I have no idea what model it was. I think my biggest issue with this toaster is that for $300, I'd expect even toasting. This is an issue most toasters have, but you'd think for $300 they could figure out how to make that better.

I have the elite so I can speak of my experience with it. (note I did buy this toaster before I saw this video) Out of the box, I tried one slice of rye bread on 3. It was taking so long I ended the cooking before it was done. Hitting the cancel button did make it spring the toast out on my counter. I lowered it down to the 2 setting for the next round of toast. We did two full rye slices and then cut one slice in half. It worked wonderfully! So I am happy with my purchase of this toaster. I think one good thing about it being so strong on the lower setting is when it gets used more over time and the coils inside start to lose their strength I can set it to a higher setting and still work really well.

I think you were too quick to dismiss the Elite Gourmet - the toasting was overall more even than the $300 Revolution toaster and the only real problem you seemed to have was that the settings didn't match up to your expectations based on your experiences with other toasters, IE: the Elite Gourmet setting 1 was more like the setting #3 on your Walmart toaster, setting 2 on Elite Gourmet was more like setting 4 or 5 on another... Since it didn't come with a manual or pictures to show what one should experience its hard to say if thats a bad thing - the only real issue would be if you really like your toast very lightly toasted... if thats not the case then it looks like the Elite Gourmet on setting 1 or 1.5 works perfectly fine and gives an even toasting.

And it's so simple! If it's not toasting to your liking, you just turn a screw to change the tension on the aluminum strip (so that it takes more or less heat to deform) and the heat is based off of the temperature of the bread, not the toaster, so you don't have to worry about toasting back to back. I genuinely do not understand why slot loading toasters still exist. The only reason I can think of, is that if you didnt have one growing up, you are afraid of trying something different. Toaster ovens cost the same as a slot loading toaster, takes about the same amount of space (just a little deeper), and can do infinitely more than just make toast. My $25 toaster oven might not have a touchscreen and a motorized lifter, but I would choose it over that $300 toaster oven.

It's a toaster oven but super compact and not much bigger than a toaster. The toast presets work really good for me and its toast darkness is accurate every time. Took me a while to get used to it for other foods because it will burn the surface of some food fast. I found putting aluminum foil over the food if I'm baking something it works well to just cook the food. It’s insane what it’s capable of, it’s fully automatic all you do is place the bread in and it will start (no lever/button). The craziest thing is that you never have to set a timer, it has a thermometer inside that reads the breads surface temperature and it will go up automatically when it’s perfectly toasted. Since it uses temp, it’ll automatically adjust time for harder or easier to toast things. It would be super cool if you could get your hands on one and review it, I know you like vintage gadgets. I don’t understand why the technology was abandoned and how we have worse toasters 70 years later. It even toasts more evenly, apologies for the ramble I just really like that toaster lmao.
