I am one of the singers with the band in the video, Chicago's 'Maxwell Street Klezmer Band,' although I was not there performing at the parade. For anyone here who might be suggesting that the band might have known what was going on at this point in the video: I have been in touch with several band members who were playing on that float, and they had no idea what had happened at this point. They were a couple blocks away and around the corner from where the shots were fired, and both because of their distance from the shooting scene - along with the volume of their music - they heard nothing. Additionally, as you can see in the video, this was the very start of when people starting running toward them. At the very beginning of the clip, nobody had actually even run past them yet. Once the band saw the commotion in the crowd, there was obviously a moment of confusion before they realized that something was clearly wrong. Also, remember, some of them are looking at their music, and parades are events where this is often a lot of movement and activity. It was moments after the end of this clip that they stopped playing and left the scene. Please don't add to the sadness of this tragic event by suggesting that the band would continue to play knowing what was actually going on. I've know most of the musicians in this video for decades, they are dear friends and some of the most loving, gentle and kind-hearted people on the planet. Meanwhile, Highland Park happens to be my home town, and I had attended that parade every year during my childhood. I had just been talking to a friend the day before the parade and was reminiscing about how special that yearly parade was and how idyllic Highland Park was in those days. I am broken hearted for the victims' families (at least one who my family knows), everyone who was there, the people of Highland Park and the surrounding areas, and our whole country. I pray for our country and our planet.

I feel like this is a very fitting description of America. Someone begins straifing the crowd with gunfire at a fourth of july parade and the band is just like "whatever, we'll keep playing." Shocked anyone was even running at this point, seeing how mass shootings are as newsworthy nowadays as a weather report. "Breaking news, 20 people killed, 45 injured in shooting at fireworks show. Now for sports."

If that isn't the most American scene ever shown, I don't know what is. Men, women and children running for their lives while an 18-20 year old kid sprays them with 5.56 rounds. All the while, a band plays on from the bed of a pickup driving in a parade down Main Street. That could literally be the opening scene, music and everything, from a movie about the demise of the greatest country on earth. So F'n sad.
