The ironies of human existence continue on - to still kiss the asses of the "clan chief" descendants of the clans who sold out, and are now British lords with Eton accents. They dress-up in tartans and parade around at various festivals. Nice work if you can get it. What is now a proud tradition of military tradition is rooted in the desperation and clan loyalty of the poor - and profit for the chiefs farming out their men to the English army (being a Lovat Scout - clan Fraser - for instance). Time has a way of washing away the soiled truth. Skirl the pipes, pound the drums, march into battle! It's so much fun for the young who know not the history - nor care to know it...
I consider myself one of the fortunate whose ancestors left Scotland and made a life for their descendants in NZ. Recently followed up various family lines (thanks to Burkes Peerage) and you're right, sell outs. Many of my ancestors were swearing allegiance to English Kings, as they followed the money trail.
@@malcolmcanning548 The tartan was started by the English by excess of linen. The scots did not traditionally wear them, I learned this during a college course. traditionally Scots wore a long linen shirt, cant remember the name of it.
@@vincivedivicilextalionas4036 English narratives are mostly false as in empire.. tartan comes from tartarian , look at the tartarian architecture in every city in the world ..all started in i840s .
I too am a Highlander. Born in Canada. My highland history is a line of ancestors, always of the male side. I have visited the Highlands only once. However, I forever am aware of my history. It goes back to the 1300's (and further) when the Maclean Clan went into battle at Bannockburn with Robert the Bruce, like so many other highland men (and women). Thank you for reminding me of my history! -- Anthony Duart Maclean, Montreal, Canada
Ok first of all Robert the Bruce was not a highlander, he was born and settled in the lowlands. Remember confuse Jacobitism with the Scottish wars of independence. Secondly you are a Canadian. Your not a Highlander if you have never lived there. Saying your a highlander because 1 part of a massive family tree from hundreds of years ago were highlander does not give you the authentic right to be a highlander. All Americans and Canadians say they are Irish, or Scottish or English or Itallian. None of them have anything close to 30% of what they claim to be. Canadians & Americans are 1-10% mix of many many ethnicities. I'm 88% Scottish & 12% Irish and I've lived here my whole life. You will be lucky to get 20% Scottish in your ancestry ethnicity results, plus you have never lived here. You are not a Highlander, you are a Canadian who simply thinks your a Highlander.
For that is the mark of the Scots of all classes: that he stands in an attitude towards the past unthinkable to Englishmen, and remembers and cherishes the memory of his forebears, good or bad; and there burns alive in him a sense of identity with the dead even to the twentieth generation. Robert Louis Stevenson
+Ian MacFreeman Ode to the Referendum of Scottish Independence William Wallace: The English occupiers fought I bravely, leading a revolt. I could the English force defeat In daring fight of Sterling Bridge. By evil foes I was betrayed And sent to English court in chains. They hanged me, dragged, tore out my guts And body quartered in four parts. What agonizing bitter pain! My sacrifice was all in vain! Robert the Bruce: The English ruler I defied, Through bitter hardships kept my pride And for my country I could earn A victory at Bannockburn. I set beloved Alba free. Alas! What now do I see? The nation once that was so brave, Now freely chose to be a slave. Oh what unbearable shame! For all my efforts were in vain! Jacobites: By English we were shot and hanged, Our lands were taken, tartans banned. Our language, arms and our faith Were under penalty of death. When English foe destroyed our clans We bore a hope that our sons Would win back glory for our land. And what a horrid bitter end! Our blood turned red the black terrain But all our lives were lost in vain! All Together: You did not have to take a sword You had to write a single word You chose a «No» for freedom's vote And now we say «We know you not!» From now on we don't want Our memory to be disturbed. William Wallace & Robert the Bruce: Replace the monuments for us With proper statues of Longshanks. Jacobites: The Duke of Cumberland, our foe, Let him Culloden Moor adore. All Together: Old Scottish history it turned Was at the stake to ashes burned. New Era's history you write For brave and gallant Alba died.
Seems like many clips are from the 1980s? I don't remember the 90s looking like that. Also, Scots have more cultural encrouchment from the Global South to worry about...
Eoin MacFreeman + Indeed. My family emigrated from Skye to PEI in 1803... even now, we know our Skye heritage, with documented genealogy back 22 generations. I never thought that was anything but normal. peace all
I like to think of it like this: The constituent Nations of the island of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and for the most part Ireland as a whole all clubbed together despite our differences and have left an indelible mark on humanity that has only been a net positive for and will continue to do so. That is to say that is what we should be proud of and not to look at our differences or past squabbles.
“New” Scot here. I’m in the U.S., and honestly never knew I was Scottish, until I did a DNA test and I came back as 39% Scottish Highlander. So now I am trying to learn about my history. Thanks for the video!
@@michellepeoplelikeyoumurde8373 Who are you to tell people who they are or aren’t. Seriously. What a small, hateful and insignificant life you must live.
It wasn't any easier in America. My 100% Scottish grandmother's had grandparents, great grandparents, and gggrandparents that were cleared from the Highlands and immigrated to Nova Scotia, finally to Kansas where farmsteads were being given away. They struggled here as well, not recovering even to the mid-20th century. I am dismayed that the language is disappearing as well. There are efforts to restore it. I sincerely hope they are successful. I have even begun learning gaidhlig and hope to one day be fluent. I am also teaching it to my children and will teach the language, history and culture as I can to my grandchildren. Though I have a passion for Scotland, I live in the USA. I hope that there will be enough of us to help make a difference.
+Daya Tazz Good luck to you. The Elites don't want nation States, and or troublesome Patriots. We live in perilous times. All the best with your efforts Daya its really going to be down to folks like yourself to make the difference
The idea that elites do not want nation states and are attempting to build a one world government is nothing but propaganda. The elites depend on nation states, and the notions of race, nationality, creed culture to keep us divided and easily manipulated. The nation state is a man-made construct of control. This documentary is very interesting, and Scottish culture is rich and has much to offer, but that you can preserve the past is just ludicrous....we are supposed to learn from the past, take the good from it and discard the bad, the divisive. I have done years of political economy, and what drives modern wars is the division of the world into hostile irrational nation states and the ownership of private property (the right of private individuals to own the resources of the earth that belong to all). This is something that crofting is trying to overcome, and is a positive initiative. Scottish history is riddled by betrayals of those in power, because they could not care less about nation pride or whatever, they only care about personal power, but they know how vital stoking nation pride is, in controlling the mass of people. Gaelic will end up like Latin, a dead language, doesn't mean the history becomes irrelevant. The standard of living in the first world, is totally dependent on enslaving the third world for cheap labor, and raising their countries to the ground, murdering and displacing tens of millions of innocent human beings, to steal their resources to fuel our cities. The last thing elites fear is nationalism, they are forever disseminating rubbish about preserving "our culture, "our heritage", "our language", because it ensures nothing changes and they maintain control. The status quo remains the same, and that is exactly what they want "Nationalism is an infantile disease, the measles of mankind" Albert Einstein We are one race, the human race, and if we do not learn to share the resources of the planet equitably and peacefully, we will wipe our selves from the face of the earth....and we are not far away from doing that now, and will have no one but ourselves to blame.
‘If you can cut people off from their history, they can be easily persuaded.’ Karl MarxAs we are clearly seeing things from different spheres of reality after I got my head around to what you are implying I ended up addressing this patronising comment over on google +
Humans need to identify and belong to a place and a group. I enjoy the cultural and racial diversity that exists on the planet. If we all become one and the same what a bland, sad place it will become. Imagine never seeing a human with blue eyes. Between too much outbreeding and inbreeding there is a balance.
"The idea that elites do not want nation states and are attempting to build a one world government is nothing but propaganda." No, it's actually not but you saying that it is despite the published works of these elites saying otherwise IS propaganda. And the elites literally write about it very often. One needs only look at the rise of League of Nations, UN, EU, NATO etc to see the goal. They don't depend on nationality or race, in fact, they want us to lose those most so that our allegiance would be ONLY to the global state. Much the same as religion, religion allows people to make allegiances and develop a culture and identity SEPARATE from the government or whatever trash they're putting out currently and calling culture, which is a problem for them. You can read Rockefeller's memoirs, Bertrand Russell, any number of "honored" british "academics"
People who have never visited the 'Highlands' should do so it's the most wonderful experience you can get and if you live in the UK easily accessible, I go again to 'Skye' in August and can't wait and if you have a Motor home you can park free at Kyleakin near the waters edge,it's beautiful.
My first ancestor of record on my mother's side in the US was Josiah Munroe, one of the Jacobite losers of Culloden. He was 16 when he was transported to the Mass. Bay Colony, served out his indenture, married a half Mohawk, half French trappers daughter, fought against the British for the second time, and died in the Revolution in 1779~ He left 9 living children.
Seems a sad state of affairs for the people of Scotland, many from the west islands to be pulled into wars fighting for the english side.It may be true that there was poverty in the highlands but this opinion is one interviewers opinion. Just the description of how families lived is biased. There would be many families who were poor but happy in their way of life. The film almost makes an excuse for attracting all those scots into war, and furthermore taking advantage of their circumstances in life. The Scot leaders did in many ways betray their kinfolk, and created the situation which would result in the poverty or lack of means. Hence those English in power made use of the Scots, and also were the catalyst in the large immigrations of people going to another land. Seems to be the usual get rid of the populace to get rid of the culture and take over the land. There is no wonder why the Scots dislike England to this day. oh yes I love the clan chiefs who are really lords of England with what I think is a Eton accent. Really a insult to the true Scottish people who fought so long for their identity and culture.
Some of my Scottish ancestors came to Australia as a result of the Clearances. Their shipping records include an appraisal made by some upper class git of the family's potential as labourers.
My ancestors (McRaes) went to Canada (Red River colony) first but ended up settling in NZ. If you go to Dunedin, Sth Island, NZ, you see the mark the early Scottish settlers made on the building of the town. And the surrounding district could just about pass for Scotland.
@@kerrywatson8581 You should visit a place near me called Sheriffmuir. There is worthy monument to the McRaes that died there in great numbers fighting for Scotland.
As a Texan somehow I've always been fascinated by Scotland and the stories. I have a niece probably going back to school in England after this pandemic mess is over. I have 3-4 weeks I can take off from work a year, I MUST go visit!! Would it be a far trek from London? TY for this vid! I looked it up, 6-700 miles to Edinburgh from London, that would be like driving through Texas!!! I WILL come in 2021
+ My line is of course of the MacDonald clan. And Danish as well Irish blood.Hmmmmm somebody was buggering with the Vikings!!! LOL Proud of that as well!
Scottish blood flows strong in America. I know it's not the same, but many of us are proud of that heritage. Thanks for bringing all those stills, lol!
Well done and well spoken. As a Border Scot of the diaspora whose family left the Borders 400 years ago during the persecution of James I/IV, I wonder -- what do the Scots of Scotland feel about the aristocrats who have betrayed Scotland over the centuries?
I understand that. The question is what do today's Scots feel about the clan chiefs and the aristocrats like the Buccleuch? Americans, whose ancestors left Scotland because of the actions of the clan chiefs and nobles, forget about that and romanticize them. And the chiefs make a pretty penny on the tourism.
Well, the Scots were from Ireland and the lowland "Scots' were basically ethnically English (given that the ironically-named Scots language is essentally the olders and purest form of English spoken in the British isles). The Highland "Scots" were or are the last Britons and not "Scots' at all.
There is NOTHING in the Prescription Act of 1747 banning the playing of bagpipes nor the speaking of Gaelic. The wearing of Highland Dress was banned only north of the Highland Line with the exception of those who enlisted in the king's army and drovers who have a bi-annually renewable licence endorsed by the government - both were allowed to carry arms. Interestingly the first record of someone being arrested for the wearing of Highland Dress was recorded in the Rannoch Garrison records where" the black servant of Stewart of Ardshiel was caught wearing a tartan coat, small kilt, tartan wasit-coat and tartan hose. See 'The History of Highland Dress by J. Telfer Dunbar.
I stayed in Oban this July, where I took daily trips to the Inner Hebrides, visiting Mull, Staffa and others. I absolutely LOVE this part of Scotland, not to say I don't like the other parts!!

Sorry ,but please read your history , dont mistake the highlanders or jacobites supporters as the whole scottish nation as this was certainty not the case many many scots had no interest in the jacobite cause of returning a catholic stuart to the british throne as this would have surley meant an alliance with catholic france spain and back to more authority from the pope in rome thus relinquishing the new found freedom in their worship since the reformation
Don't you understand that Protestantism was the mean for the English Crown to undermine your independence? A Catholic Scotland was keeping its Liberty: its people could hear not only the King, but also the Catholic Church and Catholic Allied Nations against England. A Protestant Scotland signed the Act of Union of 1707. And you lost your territory, your National Gaelic Language, your King, your Pride, your independence: military, political, economical, social ... Your elites betrayed you, and you're allowing it still today ... Next time: Vote lndependence !!
I t was the Catholic and Episcopalian Scots who kept alive the flame of freedom in Scotland. The lowlanders plus Clan Campbell being Protestants, like the English, sided with them against their own country !
The greatest enemy that had to be beaten down in Ireland and Scotland alike was the Gaelic tongue and the gaelic mind that it sprung from. Only now is there the chance through co-operation between the Irish and Scottish Educational systems to strengthen the language where it still survives. The 'white settlers' and their Sun, Mirror and Mail have nothing to offer the Gael in ireland or Scotland. Common language, common culture, common cause. Ní neart go cur le chéile.
Gerry Sóna Gaelic is the patrimony of the Irish and Scots alike. That minsed of rejection has made both nations mere puppets of the English-oriented United Kingdom
+18tangles Only fitting then the highland regiments bloodied the French less than 10 years later in North America and again in the wars against Napoleon.
Republican propaganda. Abandon the Vatican influence and perhaps the true Gael, the Scot, may think on the Iberian or Irish... as you are . Nothing in common with real Scots or Gaelic Irish who are also from Scots but therein lies end of comparison. Republican propaganda sweet n simple.
A Campbell duke gets his chance to clarify history based on the fact that he has a dirty great big house instead of an unknown bit of Inverness bog.. “The victor will always be the judge, and the vanquished the accused.” Hermann Göring
I can remember way back in the 70s, while I was climbing in Glen Coe, I had to sign in as Mr Stewart, as admittance would have been not allowed due to my real name Campbell. Us Scots have a good grasp of their own history, here's tae us, wha is like us , their aw deid, thank Christ.
I'm an American now. Mother's ancestors were part of Washington's army. I've never been to Scotland. Perhaps now it is time. Maybe I'll arrive on the west coast! Honor the past. Live in the now. Cultivate the future. Long live the Stewart's. Long live Scotland. Long live the U.K. Long live the U.S.A. And long live the Anglosphere as a whole.
It's cool that Gaelic was spoken by the Tarim basin giants, tartan-weavers who "brought their own Mongolians" when they colonized North America. Six noble cities and more than 100 towns existed around the great salt lake by the mid 1200's. Na-Dene (Athapaskan), Navajo, Dene, Apache have Ket Gaelic language roots and their DNA is of Tarim basin origin. Maybe tartan-weaving Scotland was part of Tartary; Wales flies the exact same griffin as half the Tartarian kingdoms, so king Arthur was almost certainly a Tartarian king. We are all of the Dragon clans. The Tarim Basin is the upper part of the Black Dragon River/Amur drainage basin, home of the legendary Amurru/Amorites. These Dragon clans are the "men of reknown" even today.
A documentary of Scotland narrated by Sean Connery? Wundebar! I shall cherish this piece of my ancestral culture and hope to preserve it in this age where traditions seems to be eroding everywhere I can see.
"The Campbell soldiers" (in Glencoe); what rubbish and poor research, who fed Connery that tired old falsehood? Robert Campbell of (Chesthill) Glenlyon certainly commanded the soldiers, but they were government troops and not Campbells. [Disclaimer: I'm not a Campbell but I am of long Glenlyon ancestry.]
My 10th Great Grandfather on my father's side was exiled to America after Dunbar in 1650 never to return to the Highlands. We have our genealogy traced to the 11th century. A Very prominent Fraser family. The fire still burns inside of us here in New England. The longing for the Highlands.
Well, it is only playing out of my left speaker and middle - not the right. Probably what it is, it's just sound from one side!! Bugged me for a second but I think I'll make it!!
Clan Morrison from my father's side and clan McHenry (Hendry) on my mothers. Much love and respect to my ancestry and to those that hold it dear to them as well.
The Clan system was far being a Democracy. It was a strict feudal system with the chief holding the power of life and death over clan members. Certain positions of privilege gave some people more advantage than others. The lowest fared poorly, barely scraping a living and all were basically rent to their overlord to be used at his whim. As can be seen during the Highland clearances, the loyalty of the Clans was a one way street. The chiefs and lairds preferred profits over duty to their subjects and were quick to kick them off the land they had defended for centuries, in favour of sheep . If the Duke of Cumberland did anything worthwhile ,it was the destruction of the Clan system !
Thumper Sounds like Hawaii. When you buy a house there, it's actually just a 99 year lease on the house, you don't own the land. Islands, not a lot of elbow room, just a few rich hoarders.
And still the ruling classes get voted into power. Even after sending so many to death in WW1, old Etonians and their like still have the boot on our throats. Scots, rise up!
Highlanders and democracy on the same line is an oxymoron. The highlanders lived just as medieval lords. Straight ou of th dark ages. The Lord was master and God.
Can anyone help me with the title of the song that Karen Matheson is singing just after the clip of rob roy mcgregor . I ain’t got a clue what she’s saying but her voice and those words take me away
Is the free booklet advertised at the end of this still available, I wonder? would love to have it. and I don't think this is just a 'gloss over' video about the highlands, there is much to be learned from this docu, if you listen!
‘Grampian Television’ Franchise no longer exists, it was swallowed up by Corporate- STV so trying to track a copy down through there is a non- starter I am afraid. If you check ebay or any similar sites you may be lucky and come across a copy. As you rightly say there is much to be learned from this. You never know someone watching may have a spare one. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I feel sorry for the clans who were cleared; I've always felt sorry for them. Donald Trump's Mother was a refugee girl from Lewis. That's a family that could have remained in the Highlands.
What a wonderful patriotic feature!! So good to revisit it. I saw it when it first came out 25 years ago on the anniversary of the glorious '45' One comment: It wasn't "God" who caused the Iolair disaster (26.26) such evils have Satanic mores at its route. This facet of Scottish fatalism encoded into religious dogma has been the principle cause of societal resignation and consequent emigration.
I have visited the grave of Flora McDonald she was a very good and brave lady who even after the Bonnie Prince Charlie saga led a very interesting life, fighting Indians in the American colonies and Pirate's on her way back to Scotland, a most remarkable Woman
The irony is that when the Highlanders were fighting for the English against the French in Canada there were descendants of Jacobite Highlanders in the French army on the other side. Much later, one of Napoleon´s field marshals was Etienne MacDonald who was also fighting against his own people serving foreign masters.
Great to see Margaret Bennet interviewed here. She is still a great voice for the proud and sad history of Scotland. Also, her son Martyn was a great musician, taken from us far too early.
Aye what if... But.Its hard to imagine the House of Stewart being any different. The power and glory would have still remained in London. One should not forget that the Jacobean era under his ancestor James VI of Scotland and First of England was all for a single parliament for Scotland and England when he was King of both countries. People also forget that after the union of Scottish and English crowns in 1603 he lived in England for nearly all of his reign.
ja jane But one other thing I should have said is if The Stewarts had been successful in the 1745 campaigns it would have been a different Scotland to now, for one The Highland clearances would not have happened. Imagine the richness in our Highland culture we would have enjoyed now. Thanks for commenting
