Those late pitches by Mildren to Greg Pruit was just insane, especially for the era. Holieway was the second coming along with Lott & Watts. Bobby Warmack was a stud but ran the offense out of the I formation with Shoat & Owens.
I listened to this game overseas on the armed forces network. All I remember is the announcer yelling "pitch to Pruitt, he's at the 45, 40; 35, 30; 25, 20;....." all game long!
Skip Bayless - who is from Oklahoma - purportedly wrote something like "Greg Pruitt runs like a balloon losing all of its air." Pruitt was an amazing back; he and Jack Mildren were quite a duo, perhaps the best RB-QB wishbone combo ever. If Oklahoma had held on to beat Nebraska in '71, Pruitt probably would have won the Heisman.
The Horns had also won twelve of thirteen, putting real distance between us in the all-time series record. We've been playing serious catch-up ever since. But was this ever a glorious day!
