I watched this fight on our black and white TV my father screamed at the TV he hated Ali but I got to see the goat the best ever God bless you Mohamed Ali
@@loydkline2644 he built up his fights to get more viewers which is exactly what influencer boxers do now and they get more views than acutely boxers Ali was always humble but he bragged to get views cause he was not only the prettiest and greatest but the smartest too
Ali fought smarter than anyone. He always had a strategy. And he consistently wore down his opponents with his backwards movements, only swinging when he had a real opening. Absolutely the genius of boxing
@@NtrosXo so diego corrales isnt any good? He fought mayweather but lost. Mayweather fought the best of the lightweight division could offer. Cant control what your division has
This is just Amazing boxing skill; Ali was a tremendous athlete! After he got back from losing his Heavyweight Belt, he won it back everytime. During this time in the '70's i noticed how well he could take a punch and just flat out FIGHT! He was really an ICON, no doubt about it!
He didn't NEED to take a punch ... he was too fast for his opponents (of the time) to be able to land one! He took a punch (or three), in order to prove that he COULD!
Ali was asked if he had any regrets about his career. He said he regretted never telling Liston how scared to death he was to get in the ring with him.
@@Thelastbased it was rigged how Liston literally tried to blind Ali with stuff on his gloves to beat him and Ali was still tagging him up stop the cap
@@dennispinnock301 as i just posted, was a closer fight than most people currently seem to believe. was scored dead even when liston quit. ali said later this was his most difficult fight
I'm amazed at how big Muhammad was , he came in as a big underdog and everyone thought he would loose but he was at his best. What a great man & Boxer . RIP CHAMP 🙏
Ali is GOAT, but I want to just thank whoever discovered the movie picture. Making it possible for us today to actually see with our own eyes why Ali was referred to as the GOAT
Surly, Ali was NOT the most “mobile heavyweight” of all time! The man was a total mess, a Slobbering, Drooling, uncontrollable shaking physical mess!! Clearly, during Ali’s boxing career, his mobile skills were not good enough to allow him to escape the brutal punishment he absorbed in his FIVE LOSSES as well as other fights to prevent him from his horrible existence at the end of his life! Rocky Marciano on the other hand was a Master of Defense and of body and foot movement which allowed him to escape overwhelming punishment from his opponents! Rocky pummeled his opponents while for the most part escaping his opponents abilities to do the same to him!!!
@@micahkiyimba8641 “He stayed too long”, oh really? Geez, No Shit Sherlock.!!! At least you admit he suffered damage! But it wasn’t JUST at the END of his career! Any damage a fighter sustains is cumulative, through their whole career! Understand this, Ali was 7 wins, 3 Losses in his last 10 fights! Not bad, but not great either! You know who was GREAT their whole career? The real G.O.A.T. HEAVYWEIGHT, Rocky Marciano, he suffered NO DAMAGE.!!! Staying TOO LONG, that was Ali’s choice to make and he made the wrong one, he stayed WAY too long! It became his problem, a life altering and ending mistake …A Big Mistake which is just another reason why he doesn’t measure up as the G.O.A.T. Heavyweight! @Micha Kiyimba GTFOH 😱🤣
Ali was so quick in his prime it was impossible to hit him. Nearly 4 years ban from boxing and past his prime and return in 70s golden era of boxing. He still dominate s the 70s .
This is the clearest and cleanest footage i've ever seen of this first fight, i wish you could do each round and show the whole fight at some point, this is a fantastic job you've done cleaning it up. Thanks for posting, i've seen many other versions over the years but for some reason this is the first time i've seen yours here. Thanks, Hammer.
Stop the nonsense puh-leeze! Ali was indeed a great, great fighter, and I stand amazed at his ability to take punishment as well as his speed and ring savvy. However, Joe Frazier beat the snot out of him in both their first and third fights (have to review their 2nd), Ken Norton broke his jaw and without a shadow of a doubt got the better of Ali in their 3 bouts, ridiculous decision in Ali's favor at Yankee Stadium notwithstanding. His 1974 defeat of George Foreman is a bit suspect because George was at a low state in his career mentally, he was not at his best. Who's the GOAT of the heavyweights? There ain't one! They are all great fighters, they all beat each other and they all lost to each other pretty much: Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, etc, etc. They are roughly equal, all great fighters, Ali just out talked everyone else. It's the same with NFL running backs: Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, etc. Who was the greatest? The case could be made for all 4 - they were all amazing. Similarly in batting: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Albert Pujols, etc, etc. - a lot of great hitters, perhaps no clear GOAT other than Williams. The only exception would be Michael Jordan, though, as he was definitely a cut or two above the other greats (yes, including LBJ). There's no way Ali could be the GOAT when he was so badly beaten by 2 of his contemporaries and there are other luminaries like Iron Mike he has to favorably compare to.
@@jamespenny9482 he fought Frazier without boxing for 3 years his first fight and still was winning the first couple rounds. After he came back he was never the same dancing Ali. He lost his endurance and had to resort to relying on his chin power. Ali also beat the crap out of Frazier in their 3rd fight and Joe admitted Ali getting the best of their 3 fights (but he takes 100% credit winning the most important fight being their first). Ken Norton is the only boxer that can claim to have gotten the best of Ali. Even then, Ali was past his prime fighting Norton and managed a solid win (their 2nd). Ali went on to beat Foreman and Shavers, two heavyweights that destroyed Ken Norton in less than 4 rounds. Ali was the best of his time easily and his most important fights (Foreman, Frazier, Norton) we’re all after his 3 year hiatus from boxing. We can never truly compare cross generation fighters, but Ali was undoubtedly the best of his time
I really can't stop thinking about Ali's condition in the following years. Every punch contributed a little more, makes me really sad to know how his life ended. The greatest.
@@consciousgentile5141 I'm not saying it is what caused it. I'm saying it contributed to it. He'd get parkinson either way, but maybe not as fast. Edit: either + way
Just look at him. The sweetest, finest boxer that ever lived in history. Clean, beautiful, quick, decent, but sharp as a razor. Indeed, "you can't hit what you cannot see" ... Muhammad Ali!
He also wins this match because of his ability to take a punch. It's why the best punchers couldn't beat him. Unless of course, they had the stamina of Joe Fraizer.
@@destroya3303 But he beat Joe easily in their second fight at Madison Square Garden. And in their third fight in Manila he sent Joe to the hospital for a month.
@@babulah8447 He didn't beat Joe Frazier easily in the second fight. If you look closely, he was constantly on the move, having experienced in the first fight how very dangerous a boxer Joe was. In their third fight, though he didn't spend time in the hospital, he described the fight as the nearest thing to death for him. The damaging effect that The Thrilla ln Manila had on Ali health was such that he ought not to have continued fighting afterwards. That fight " left both men permanently injured." was the summary of DSTV in 2013 after showing the fight to viewers again and again. Great legends of boxing they both were with contrasting styles, both RIP!
@@sundayekiran7955 Take a look at the score cards from their second fight. Not close. After Manila Frazier needed 9 1/2 months to get back in the ring. One of those months was spent in the hospital. After Manila Ali next fought 4 1/2 months later. Then two months after that. Then one month. Then Norton four months after that. Ali needed 9 months after Norton which was a close fight. Look at the score cards. Then be beat Evangelista. Then Shavers. Shavers was the boxer that rocked Ali with power shots to the head earning Ernie the label by Ali as the hardest hitter. Oh, Frazier got bounced around the ring by Foreman after Manila. Then he had a draw against some no name. Then he retired. Class over. Make sure you don't forget your pencils.
He outsmarted Liston and used his footwork and head feints to evade punches and constantly dancing in circles to evade punches. Going toe to toe would have been bad for Ali. So his style and strategy worked. Liston was a good fighter and a tough fighter but Ali was a great Boxer and he used his speed and boxing skill to beat Liston.
Liston was a great fighter,50 &4 39 kos 2 losses to The GOAT! Liston my #2 Heavyweight of All Time behind Ali!! Liston jab set up everything 4 him great jab could hurt u but Ali jab was much quicker then Sonny and the dancing gave Liston problems!
What beat Liston as much as Ali did was his age (at least 32) and his bad knees and bad left shoulder. A 1958 Liston would have had a pretty good chance against Ali.
@@richardlstern8241 That’s all true and I agree with you. But the changing of the guard is a natural process. Ali’s last fights were ugly and looked like a younger guy beating up an old man who could no longer defend himself. It was sad and Ali took punches to the face and head that he used to slip and evade with ease. That’s how it goes! An older champion always tries to hold on too long.
Thanks to you tube even those of us who were not there are able to see and still enjoy the incomparable talent ever in the boxing world. Rest in peace champ. We love even I death. Head about you far away from where you were in the United States here in Africa.
Ali lost FIVE FIGHTS. Most of his losses were against just barely better than Average Fighters. Ken Norton beat Ali and Norton did become the Heavyweight Champion. Although Norton wasn’t good enough to hold the Title! Leon Spinks, another Bum of the week, also beat Ali ….BOOM!!! Larry Holmes beat Ali’s Ass! Holmes however was a great fighter!!! Even Trevor Berbick, another Bum, beat Ali!!! Sorry, but Ali wasn’t the greatest fighter by far ….his mouth was great! 👍🏾

To everyone on this post, most of which are much younger than I, I am so glad you get to see films of Muhammad Ali in the early days. I was a child during the Liston fight but I remember it well. And I remember the photos in the paper of Liston's tattered face. My Dad told us, "that is the fastest heavyweight boxer in history. He's as fast as middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson!" It was like watching a Superhero in real life.
