This color film highlighting the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, New York was taken from the opening night presentation on the NBC Network, April 22, 1964. It’s narrated by Henry Fonda (:22), Marion Anderson (:28), Lorne Greene (:30), Carol Channing (:33), Cantinflas (:36), and Fred MacMurray (:39). It was produced by NBC for United States Steel (:46), which manufactured the 12-stories-high Unisphere (:50), a replica can be seen in Epcot, Disney World. Henry covers the transportation pavilions. The Gondola Ride gave attendees a bird’s eye pass over the park (1:03-2:03). Fred took us on a ride in a Mustang convertible on the Magic Skyway of the Ford Pavilion (3:13), passing Walt Disney (3:17) doing the same. This ride showcases man’s history (3:26-4:25). The Avis Car Ride lets visitors drive an antique reproduction around the track (4:35-4:44). Chrysler featured a ride through a 100-foot engine (4:50-5:23). General Motors provided a Futurama 2 ride (5:32-7:58). Lorne takes over at the highest point is an observation tower at the New York Pavilion (8:25-9:03). Join the band as it marches through the individual state pavilions (9:15-11:20). Florida features a dolphin and seal show (11:21-11:50) and Hawaii has dancers and flame twirlers (11:53-12:39). The seats of the People Wall are lifted into the grandstand in the IBM Pavilion (13:43). Carol Channing sings a rundown of the Fair (14:11-17:03). The Bell System Floating Wing Pavilion has various activities (17:08) and General Electric sponsors The Carousel of Progress (17:25-18:38), a rotating stage now at Disney World. Eastman Kodak provided fun for kids (18:39-19:03). NCR provided a giant abacus (19:05-19:14). RCA placed 200 closed-circuit TVs around the fairgrounds, which included broadcasting lost children (19:30-20:13). In 1939, Westinghouse buried the time capsules to be opened in 6939, its contents mostly microfilm plus a Bible. Another capsule will be buried when the 1964 Fair closes (20:14-20:59). Faith pavilions include Mormon (21:01), Billy Graham (21:05), American Israeli (21:08), Russian Orthodox (21:12), Christian Science (21:15), Protestant Unorthodox (21:17), and The Vatican (21:20). Marion Anderson leads the Westminster and Columbus Boy’s Choirs as The Pieta! by Michelangelo, made in 1499 out of a block of white marble, is shown on display in the Vatican Pavilion (21:36-23:10). The International area hosts 66 nations (23:22-24:00). Cantinflas, the famous Mexican actor, leads us through Greece (24:06-24:50), the Philippines (24:52-25:19), the Republic of China (25:20-25:40), Africa (25:43-26:28), and Mexico (26:37-28:17). The Lake Amusement Area offers entertainment, including a Wax Museum, John Ringling North’s Continental Circus, and To Broadway With Love in the Texas Music Hall (28:58-29:00). After dark, the dancing fountains feature fireworks to close the day, with a final shot of the Unisphere (29:02-30:58).

It was a different era. The Apollo program started in 1961, leading to the first moon landing in 1969. The civil rights movement held the hope of equality for all. The architecture of the fair showed flair, creativity and the belief America was rolling into a bright future. We are not the same country anymore.

I was in the US Army and missed the whole fair. As a pro photographer, in 2014 I was assigned to the 50th celebration and returned in 2015. Not much is left from the sixties but I borrowed a 1964 Ford Mustang to use with several pro models.

I got to sing there that summer, in a boys' choir at the United States pavilion. I remember in particular the immense floor map in the New York State pavilion, the Disney pavilion, and the Pieta brought to New York to be shared with the world in the Vatican pavilion.

What a delightful journey back… I was 8 years old at the time. I remember the joy of Expo 67 when looking at this, and the pleasure one had at seeing, for the first time, so many novel ‘things’. Yes, the message in the video is dated, and so much of what was considered a great exhibit … is now kitschy (think of the tire Ferris wheel). But who cares? It’s a marvellous slice of history. Thanks for posting it.

Brought back a lot of memories. I was 19 & 20 and worked as a Golden Girl for Greyhound. Best job in the world. Went to the fair every day. AND got a paycheck. Enjoyed seeing the parade on Greyhound Escorters. Thanks.

In 1964 I was 5 years old and my Aunt was a Pacific Bell Telephone Co Executive living in San Francisco . Out of the blue one day my Aunt shows up in NJ and says " Hey kids tomorrow we are going to the Worlds Fair" My Brother, Cousins and our parents jumped in the car and off we went. The Bell Telephone Company had a massive exibit and my Aunt had VIP passes. While my Aunt spent her day meeting with phone company VIPs we toured the Fair. The only thing I have vivid memories of was the GM exibit and actually beliving I was driving a car and the phone company introducing a television/ phone where you can see the person uou called and the Princess touch tone phone. -- wow no more rotary phones. That was the future.

I was born in another part of Queens a few weeks after the World's Fair closed. But I have an uncle who had a friend who was a girl who convinced him that they should pose as a married couple so they could get in with a discount. Sometime before he joined the Navy, they became a married couple for real.

I was there as a kid, with my parents, at the pass gates to leave, they used an invisible ink, and viewed the ink with a black light, when you returned...lol

I lived close we used to run across the highway sneak thru a hole in the fence. Fun times as a teen. I remember most were the cars a small 2 inch Sony tv and 2 Guys throwing a plastic disc to each yep the frissbie

We jumped the fence,too after taking the Q58 bus from Maspeth. Then we stopped by the wishing fountain at the Hawaii pavilion so we could have the coins to get some Cokes. Good times as a teenager.

Even as a 8 year old boy -- the 64 World's Fair was a unforgettable event. My family and I took the subway and rode all the way from the northeast Bronx to Queens where the WF was located. What impressed me the most -- even at that age was the optimism and wonder of the future that I could grow up in. Alas, even though my future which is now my present is technically advanced beyond what was in the 64 WF -- the optimism and wonder has been lost along the way. The aforementioned brings a tinge of sadness to my heart because I wish that the optimism and wonder could have been preserved.

I had the chance to go to the New York World’s Fair in 1964 on a 5th grade school trip. I went again in 1965 with my family. I most remember the Unisphere and the Ford pavilion. It was amazing I’ll never forget it.

I went to it and loved every second. Especially, free 7-up Pavillion that had free soda coming out of the drinking fountain. I certainly seemed like it was one big advertisement for industry.

WOW!! My mother took my sister and I to the World's Fair...I was 5 and my sister was 6. We took a Greyhound form DC to NYC and stayed with relatives. It was spectacular!!! The film evokes a couple of key memories that were lost in the recesses of my mind....thanks for posting!

Got to see the Fair as a 10 year old boy in the Summer if 64. I can remember riding the open car in the Ford Pavilion, GM Futurama, The Pieta and seeing the audio animatronic Abraham Lincoln at the Illinois Pavilion now in Disneyland.

I went at least 10 times to the Fair as a pre-teen. Like many others, our schools took us there for the best school trip of our lives. I read it was a huge money loser, but it provided a wonderful education and lasting memories. Very sad in later years to visit the site to see the crumbling structures and decay.

Light years behind us..but optimism for country world's future producers chose right actors fitting to see walt Disney passing by. Carol Channing looked great sang wonderful song.. Cantinflas wandered through some of worlds different cultures doing what he does best.. families enjoying themselves wide eyed simple pleasures not a cellphone mask fear germs in sight!! RCA NBC tv cameras provided security PEACE of mind for parents of children!! miss these days. Peace too all the world. Thank you for posting

I'm 74 from Newark NJ. A group of 8 of us went there several times! We had a great time. The train ride home at night was safe and everybody was in a good mood !😂😂 it'll never happen today in our unstable society 😢😢 !

I acquired this print from US Steel, just for the asking, in 1970, and still have it and shared with Periscope Films. Its still in the original US Steel film can and reel band but badly faded.

What I remember most about the 1964 New York Worlds Fair was the multiple Brass Rail bars where 18 year olds on a field trip from Pennsylvania could drink legally! ( I also remember the guy who threw up out the bus window on the way back to Philadelphia!)

Ironic that Lorne Green introduced the Parade of States since he wasn't American by birth; he was Canadian. But his starring role in the very popular western TV series 'Bonanza' at the time got him this particular role.

I went with my neighbors in 1965. I don’t remember Carol Channing (thankfully). They left out the greatest exhibit of all. Scattered around were small “exhibits” - that served the best burger I’d ever had “The Chun King Burger”. If you ever find one, you have my youth. No, not the Burger king!

Went to the 64 World's Fair when I was 7. All I remember is seeing the Pieta on loan. And GE's huge display at night. It was so much wattage and heat used. My favorite World's Fair was 68 Montreal. Very pop arty and futuristic.

Like everybody else posting comments here, I was a kid then. After nearly 60 years there's a lot I no longer remember, although one big thrill was sitting in the driver's seat of a new Mustang convertible to go through the Ford pavilion's rather cheesy trip through time.

I was sixteen, lived right there in Queens. It was a wonderful fair, Disney had a large number of exhibits, that would go, after the fair closed, to his theme parks. Ford GE carousel of progress. Disney had the first picture telephone hooked up to California.at the Bell exhibit. Lincoln animatronic giving the gettysberg address at the Illinois State pavilion, I remember the Sea Hunt show at the Hollywood pavilion. The place was magical when the lights came on at sunset. glowing food kiosks. Belgian Waffles were big.

I was 3 1/2 but remember it pretty good. We drove in from Michigan stayed in a outer area and took the train in. I remember riding It's a Small World and the puppet show in the France Pavillion.

We visited the Fair on July 20, 1965. My father photographed my sister and me with a backdrop that can still be replicated: the Unisphere and the NY State towers in the background. I remember going on the Swiss Sky Ride and riding on the US Royal Ferris wheel. Ironically, my father did not take a photo of it even though he worked for US Rubber, later Uniroyal, at the time. We also visited Dinoland (I had a sticker on my shirt from Dinoland), the replica of the Santa Maria and the porpoise show at the Florida Pavilion. My parents insisted that we all hold hands so we wouldn't get separated, and it worked. Only my hand got tired at one point, so my father stuck out his thumb for me to hold onto.

My family attended this event. It had the debut of Walt Disney’s “It’s a Small World” ride, which 10 year old me loved. I remember also loving the pavilion showcasing India’s culture. (I think the bright colors appealed to me.)

My late husband and I went to the Fair in 65. He kept pestering me to go for a ride in one of the Ford cars. As we drove thru the pavillion he got "frisky" and we climbed into the back seat. Nine months later we had a son - called him "Galaxie" 'cause he was conceived in the back seat of the Ford Galaxie ! ! !
