Highlights of the most dramatic and memorable moments from the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
For the first time in Olympic history, all 197 recognised National Olympic Committees were represented at the Games. Beach volleyball, mountain biking, lightweight rowing and women's football made their first appearance and sailor Hubert Raudaschl (AUT) became the first person ever to compete in nine Olympic Games.

For everything that went wrong with the games in Atlanta, it is one of the few Olympics where most of the facilities are still used in some capacity. The main stadium became Turner Field, and other events used facilities at local colleges. A real, natural whitewater rafting course in Tennessee was used instead of making a course.

While I didn't watch a lot of the Olympics this time around (I was only 14), I did watch all of the Female Gymnastics because I was a huge fan of Shannon Miller and watching the Kerri Strug moment was amazing. I know I am being selfish here, but I am hoping she's the one who will light the final Cauldron in LA in 2028 since what she did was miraculous and in the past player who made a huge impact on American sports have lighted that last cauldron (Ali in Atlanta and the USA Hockey team from Lake Placid in Salt Lake).

The olympic games 1996 are considered to be the worst organized and in terms of product placement most perverted games in history!

Also, the traveling to venues was a total nightmare for spectators and athletes. One of the best broadcasted games though.

And this is why the USA has yet to land another Summer Olympics. It'll never go back to Atlanta, even if the city wanted to do this grand circus all over again and proposed things right, the IOC would just be going, well why didn't you do all this at the Centennial? The one which actually mattered? Transportation issues with buses were a very big problem, let alone the incident of the Centennial Park bombing. They should have trained those out of state bus drivers to know well where to go about in the city well before the Games had begun. In the Opening Ceremony, the blockade of waiting buses shouldn't have been a factor to getting the athletes moving from the baseball stadium to the Olympic Stadium. Once it was the announcement of the past Olympic hosts, Greece should had been well ready to go down the ramp and everyone else should have been forming in line. They should have designed the ramp to have connected with the Olympic rings bridge, where people would have simply gone up a ramp (from ground level) through the bridge and then down the ceremony ramp to track level. These were just some of the problems of the Centennial Games in Atlanta. I don't mind commercialization of the games, especially when it meant 0 funding by American (and more importantly Georgian) taxpayers, but it was indeed done to death at these Games.

They didn't show the highlights of the athlete's busses getting lost on the way to their events and in some cases missing them. Or the bomb exploding. Or the over commercialisation with tacky stands selling junk to anyone or everybody. Or the marketing campaigns of brands trying to compete with official brands with ever increasing desperate methods. Or the terrible tacky opening ceremony.

It's too bad these were not among the most memorable games. It had its moments, but overall, Atlanta (when compared with some of the other hosts) didn't live up to par. Forget the bombing at the park; let's just focus on the athletes. Not getting to their competitions in time because of transportation issues? Unacceptable. Below-standard housing facilities? Inexcusable. Heck, some athletes actually had to go out and find their own food because the food being served was awful (I'm not talking about doing it to experience the city; it was out of necessity). Barcelona (four years prior) and Sydney (four years later) went all-in as hosts. Atlanta half-assed it.

Except in the Sydney gymnastics venue, They set the equipment (vault) at the wrong height, which effects the gymnasts' timing and could (almost did) cause terrible accidents. This during the biggest meet of most of those young athletes' lives. It cost medals, and was simply, inexcusable and horribly unprofessional. Only when an athlete noticed, did they fix it, but it was too late for many of those gymnasts.

@@carolynrabbani6469 Yup. That was problematic, but a small issue compared to Atlanta's larger issues.

That would take to long! Just look up the marketing campaigns ("You don`t win silver - You lose gold") - Welcome to China I would say! Nike and Coca Cola everywhere!

My favourite moment of Atlanta 1996 was Kieran Perkins' 1500m freestyle swim from lane 8. That was probably the best win in swimming from any Olympic swimmer of the 20th century. Nobody at the time had ever won that event at consecutive Olympics and Perkins became the first swimmer ever to defend his 1500m freestyle title that he had won in Barcelona 4 years before.
