Highlights: South Shields 5-0 North Shields - League Cup final 

My favourite Shields performance ever looking back over a year later. The 1:0 against Bradford P.A. in the F.A. cup first round in 1969 and the 2:1 win against Consett at Roker park in the Durham challenge cup 1977, York City 3;2 last season and Darlo 3:0 away last season all spring to mind as well as that amazing 4:0 win against Cleethorpes at Wembley.

An absolute class performance for the Mariner's who totally over-run the Robins from the start; in this the 3rd river Tyne Derby this season. North Shields never got out the starting blocks on the day. Gavin Cogden with his hat-trick my man of the match in the final at Hillheads, Whitley Bay. Carl Finnigan's goal; No 5 in the match would have graced the Premier League. A masacre; So Shields eased off after 5th goal. North Shields went close in 3 competitions but won nothing. Why they did not play their most creative player in starting line-up attacking winger Dean Holmes is beyond me. Jon McDonald manager resigned after full-time. Celebrations for South Shields. Their 3rd of four Trophies; two weeks later winning the FA Vase at Wembley 4-0 winners over Cleethorpes with two goals from Ex-Hartlepool player David Foley. Great achievement for Manager Lee Picton & Assistant Manager Graham Fenton ex-North Shields Manager & all the players. Congratulations.
