05.04.1973 was the date I first heard this track on Radio 1. It was Ed "Stewpot" Stewart (now sadly no longer with us) who said it was released on BBC Records.

Such a classic reflective song with one hell of a chorus. Cant think of a finer TV theme song.

I’ve just got a rush of goose pimples playing this. It reminds me of my childhood in the 1970s north east and north west. Even back then I understood the pathos in the song, perhaps why I got in to the smiths in the 80s! I remember my time at my grandparents in the north east so vividly even though it was over 40 years ago…..

Superb single and production. Written by Mike Hugg and Ian La Frenais. This is the full version of theme tune as sung by Tony Rivers. I have it on one of his CDs from a few years ago ('Tony Rivers Harmony Soul The Tony Rivers Collection Vol. 3'). nly reached No.35 in the charts in 1973.

One of the most pleasing theme songs ever recorded. Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads wasn't a bad comedy series either! James Bolam and Rodney Bewes both were on top of their game making millions of viewers laugh and what a pity the two did not get on off screen.

Highly Likely only released this single.Mike Hugg was a mamber of Manfred Mann and leter Manfredd Man Chapter Three,Check out 'One way glass'...later used in Kiss Ass by Prodigy a 1969 track and one of Vertigo's first releases.

I think it was a session artist studio band only I can't verify it ,but I think it was released off the back of the BBC TV series success ...Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads which was even more successful than The Likely Lads,Cathchy theme tunes were the thing in the 1970s.
