7:00 When I were younger I was horrified when the pilots refused to comply. I simply didn't comprehend how anyone could have the will to resist when their own lives depended on it. Now that I'm older I realize that many people really are that strong. That some would make the ultimate sacrifice even when the cause seemed hopeless. This is without a doubt amongst the greatest sequences in cinema history.
There was a million ways to land the plane once the wheels touched down. The pilots were buckled into their seats and the terrorists were not. All they had to do was slam on the footpedal brakes and the terrorists go splat into the windshield.
No that comes when they do the aerial refueling. Elya Baskin doesn't get enough credit for his roles. He was the second in command for the majority of this movie and yet he's only remembered for 'Rent' in some minor role elsewhere.
They actually seemed shocked that they would attempt to land and their inside guy didn't tell them that he would have to call in the code red and it seemed they didn't know the cockpit door could be locked, he kind of hurringly thought about blowing the lock
i thought the explosive was C4, if they had used tnt it would've destroyed the cockpit and everyone in it, and they also stick it on the door indicating that it is a plastic explosive.
@@Dnbray The inside guy went all the way to make sure that he protected himself from being detected. Also the cockpit is always locked. I think they were just giving it an extra lock.
@@GoldBanks60 Cockpits were NOT locked prior to 9/11. Cast iron fact. In any case, decision was made to have locked doors as standard post 9/11, I am old and remember the whole thing
Never noticed this before, but at 3:43, they spliced in some random footage of Marshall evading the terrorists on his own a little later 😂 still love this flick. Classic 👌
6:38 best thing about this entire landing sequence is that's a real plane with a custom paint job to match the real AFO, there's barely any CGI (aside from a couple when it's on the ground like 7:36, 8:01, 8:22 and 8:39). Everything else is real, 6:39, 6:47, 6:57, 7:02, 7:10, 7:14, 7:18, 7:21, 7:29, 7:56, 8:11, 8:20, 8:25 and 8:41). back when film makers still made an effort
I think the F-15s starting up, taxiing and taking off at full burner was real. The 6 ship rejoin was CGI. Staying in burner the whole time with one bag on the centre pylon? Betty's not gonna be happy!
the thumbnail for this video is so freaking hilarious lol the guy on the left is temper tantrum while the guy on the right is so nonchalant in expression when he sees the president escaping.
the terrorists most likely would've demanded the plane be refueled, which would've given the pentagon time to mobilize a strike team, whether or not that would've worked is unknown, especially with the president and his family still on board.
The ultra-dramatic and blatantly incorrect radio phraseology is so cringe! I think the correct phraseology is: Lagen Radar: Air Force One, turn left 1-8-5, descend and maintain 5000, Ramstein altimeter is 29.92 (assuming ICAO standard weather), expect vectors ILS runway 09, squawk 7500 and ident, number one for emergency landing AFO PM: Left 1-8-5, descend 5000, will expect vectors ILS RWY 09 for emergency landing, squawk 7500 and ident, Air Force One
I understand the real Air force carries no weapons. President's Air Force Colonel doesn't carry it on board. This I don't understand not even handguns.
@@jimramos2613I heard the script originally had Gibbs in mind and why he betrayed them, but Wolfgang Petersen decided not to focus on him too much as it would drag the story and pacing. I actually wanted to know why Gibbs betrayed them.
2:42 President James Marshall: what's going on Secret Service Agent: shots fired sir President James Marshall: my family what about my family Secret Service Agent: we're handling it sir
Did anyone notice that they re-looped the sound of the guy going "Argh! Jesus!"? once in the plane where a bag falls out and again with the officer in the control tower.
Two things real quick...at 3.48 there seems like a blooper reel misplaced and did the Secret Service agent input the escape pod before he died and when did the president escape from the escape pod without being noticed by nobody??? Oops that's 3 things Y'all
The door never fully closes. IMDb mentions that you can see Marshall climbing a ladder, if you look carefully, but after going slo mo- I just noticed that they failed to close the door. Son while the last agent is engaged , he got out.
To be fair they were caught off guard, had only their handguns, and no body armor. The terrorists had automatic weapons and body armor. Not their fault one of their own turned traitor
@@jessedellross3245 not sure if you have seen the show NCIS but Gibbs was up against a traitor with a machine gun. Plus he chose a handgun instead of an automatic weapon. Imagine if he was in the movie
I love this movie and every time I watch this scene I still love watching all the people who are making a sacrifice to try and save the president and the plane. I still hope every time that they successfully land. I’m always disappointed lol
More like Hollywood physics and the AFO Col PM didn't set the park brake, he deployed the spoilers. As soon as the wheels hit the ground, spoilers would have deployed, AF1 PF sets max thrust reverse, autobrake would have engaged, movie over. Also, engage the park brake on a high speed landing roll, AF1 is a fireball.
People don't seem to understand that suppressors don't "silence" a weapon, they merely eliminate the echo effect of an un-supressed round. The sound is still very much audible out to a range of 50 yards, it just doesn't sound like a BOOM.
TRIVIA: The plane used as AF1 is N703CK, owned by Kalitta Air. It was repainted to replicate AF1's livery and during filming at LAX, it caused a commotion, with every LA resident looking at it, thinking the president was visiting.
0:46 I'm actually surprised he drew his pistol. This scenario is just about the least likely you can imagine. An agent on the presidential detail(implied to be among the leads) vetted and all going rogue inside AF1. This guy instead of saying 'WTF is going on?' he immediately drew his sidearm.
Why not climb, to put people off-balance, and have a Pilots button to push, that cuts the Oxygen to Minimal amounts for continuing living? They'll land a plane full of asleep people. The Pres can have an O2 tank. Even if the bad guys smuggled some onbord, they'd only last for minutes. Again, don't deplete ALL O2, only to about 10-15 %. You'll wake up with a headache, but "opening a window" at 20,000 and climbing would work. (Might be cold, might ruin your contacts)...
Oxygen masks would've deployed if there was a loss of cabin pressure. The best the pilots could've managed was to dive towards the nearest airbase. If only they had 60 more seconds they could've had the plane stopped and engines shut down.
According to IMDB/script, he was upset about US intervention over Afghanistan (via Pakistan) as well as other hegemonic US actions over the 80s. The movie’s long enough, but even a little background/flashback would’ve done a lot to add to Ivan’s speech about the geopolitical realities of Russia in the mid 90s?
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z-vLQl6iIJg.html Great video on all the operational flaws in the entire movie spoken by a former fighter pilot.
3:51 I remember sitting in the theater and reflecting on how that Secret Service agent must have known that he was going to die, and yet, his only concern was holding off the terrorists long enough for the President to escape. By the way ... There were a few times during this movie that I wondered what anyone would hope to accomplish by firing a gun at a bulletproof door. I guess when you're desperate, you'll try anything you can think of.
@@FullPlaythroughsyes. Aaron Pierce seems to be in charge on every fictional president^^. Also, the killer on this scene, of secret services, is George Mason, came from division to supervise Bauer mess on season 1 and became CTU director on season 2.
@@samwisehuluberlu2210Yep, and the other agent is Captain Trilling (David Gianopoulus) from Under Siege 2, who has a minor role as a meek man who (perhaps too easily) gives up the government codes to the villain Dane; otherwise his whole plan couldn’t have gone off. Oh well, at least he got to have sex with Brenda Bakke before he left this mortal coil, so a man after our own hearts…
once the plane landed, they would have locked the planes system out from anyone being able to use them. But just incase they didnt, once they were informed the president had gotten away the plane and all on board would be expendable and they would have crashed the plane itself on the runway to prevent the hijackers from taking control of it.
There is no way to lock down controls of the flight deck, the entire deck is designed *to* allow control The only thing they could've done is to pull the fire extinguishers for the engines, shutting them down, with (almost) no way of spooling them up again, at least not for takeoff. That, or another irreversible action. It's very hard to fuck up a plane from the flight deck, including lock-outs. Also, there's no telling that these hijackers also knew of that button, and would shoot as soon as they reached for it
Bill Pullman in Independence Day was pretty good too. Leading the armed forces into battle like the kings did in medieval times, also that speech. You have to be an NPC robot unit to not shed a tear at that speech.
The First Officer should have known better. Doing what the attackers want wasn't going to save your life, he still died. I would rather die trying or having saved my people. But then again, people in movies never learn 😂
Fun fact: the Russian screaming “NOOOO” 2:47 is American actor Andrew Divoff. He usually plays bad guys and has been in a ton of movies. One of his first was as the Russian anti-submarine pilot in “Hunt for Red October”, a hells angel in “Another 48 Hours” and he was also the leader of the Columbian terrorists in “Toy Soldiers”.
@@coolcat6303 He was the main villain in Wishmaster and he played General Krukov in Red Alert 3. Also in Wishmaster 2, two terrorists from Air Force One, Levan Uchaneishvili and Ilia Volok, are playing Mr. Pushkin and his bodyguard. Ilia Volok appeared also in Executive Decision as one of the Chechen terrorists, Vladimir Kamarivsky in Battlefield 3 and the Russian Leader in G.I. Joe: Retaliation Levan Uchaneishvili appeared in Independence Day as a Russian pilot during the Morse code scene and uncle Nikolai in Spike Lee’s 25th Hour
Those first round of automatic bullets would pierce the aircraft cabin and there'd be explosive decompression. I guess the script writers were stoned at this point.
I mean... the entire sequence is raft with -- shall we say -- fantasy elements? Luckily on this, we just have to assume everyone was such a good shot that bullets only struck people or internal structures. ;)
I know it’s a movie but still this plot was so unrealistic having Gibbs as a mole. Eventually All the evidence would have led back to him. How was he going to live his life afterwards. The Russians would’ve killed him if they succeeded with the mission to cover up everything. If a man can betray his country and leader how will the enemy trust him. Still a great movie but one man couldn’t pull off that kind of mission. The entire service would have to be in on it.
I've already got the cast for my remake. The cast includes Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Alyssa Milano, Scott Wolf, Richard Armitage, Katee Sackhoff, Liev Schreiber, Alfe Woodard, Bryan Cranston, Holly Hunter, Richard Schiff, Bruce McGill, Richard Jenkins, James Remar, Peter Mensah, James Cromwell, Rade Serbedzija, Tcheky Karyo, and Dwayne Johnson 😀 😄 👍.
2:31 if the good guys just had a freaking flash bang grenade it would’ve been all over right then and there. Also why in the world does (A) all of the secret service have hand guns. You can legit conceal several SMGs like Uzis for instance, and small shotguns in suits and suitcases can hold foldable parts rifles and other weapons. (B) none of them have armor under their suits (C) there is legit only one area in airplane with an Arsenal (D) hardly anyone in the secret service aims for aims for head, pelvic area or legs. (E) no one has concealed grenades flash bangers and/or other devices of that nature.
7:05 as soon as the wheels touch the ground, spoilers come up, autobrakes engage, PF sets max reverse thrust, plane stops on runway, movie over. Also 7:31 That's not the parking brake mate, those are the wing spoilers and those should have deployed on touch down. Better off reaching for the thrust reversers and putting all your weight on the toe brakes dude! 8:19 when Boris sets max thrust for that short field flaps 30 takeoff while still heavy with fuel for a transatlantic crossing (with the weight and balance being what it is as the CG changed too, AF1 hits the Starlifter and AF1 is a fireball), everyone standing in the path of AF1 would have been juiced in those engines, which would have inevitably failed after 100 KIAS but before V1 because of all the servicemen that got juiced in AF1's engines. If Sully's CFM56's on US1549 couldn't stand a flock of cobra chickens, there's no way those engines would keep turning ingesting Marines and Air Force personnel. In conclusion: best case scenario, AF1 is stopped on the runway, marines board, zee Russians die, movie over. Worst case, AF1 is a fireball, everyone dies, movie over.
While I don't know much about Air Force One, I know enough to know that virtually none of this is even a little bit realistic, starting with the fact that the terrorists could not just simply shoot open the cockpit door the way they did. There's just no way it is that simple. It's also no secret there is no escape pod for Air Force One either.
All the people saying why didn't they do X so they could not take off again. ( 1 it's a movie. 2. People under stress don't always do what they should. Hindsight is 20 20 Your not noticing plot holes your nit picking)
Air Force One should have a huge impact on every American president from past, present and future because this movie mainly focuses on the presidency. There is a lot that they can learn from it. American history has taught us that some presidents have faced assassination and assassination attempts. In reality, if you're the president of the United States, then you are most likely the main target to all enemies, both foreign and domestic. It doesn't matter who you are. The meaning of this movie is that the president of the United States has the most dangerous job in the world. Only one of two things can happen: either the whole world fears you or you make yourself vulnerable to the world. No one should ignore this.
A lot of people ask why this many secret service agents and military officers on board weren't able to take on 6 hijackers... Well these agents and military officers were mostly armed with pistols and probably had no body armour and most probably had little to no experience on an actual battlefield... Korshunov and his men were armed with assault rifles, smg's and body armour and were seasoned combat veterans with years of experience in the field as mentioned in a later scene...plus the hijackers with the aid of the Kazakhstani military would have made a mock up of Air Force One with plans supplied by Agent Gibbs and would have rehearsed for this senario....
This movie partially reflects the reality of the Russian-American relationship in the 1990s. The two countries somehow still had warm interactions and cooperation until Butin coming to power in 2000.
