During the Covid-19 pandemic, Hong Kong residents turned to hiking trails as borders closed. Influencers and social media fueled interest in scenic spots, but accidents surged. Inexperienced hikers, drawn by the allure of untouched wilderness, faced challenges they weren't prepared for. The lack of experience, rugged terrain, and unpredictable weather led to a rise in injuries and even deaths. Authorities and hikers responded by improving safety measures and raising awareness. Proper planning, essential equipment and education about risks became crucial. Striking a balance between adventure and preparedness is key to enjoying nature while minimising the dangers of outdoor activities.

One thing Lodder did not mention that is also critical, is have warm clothing, the weather can change. Getting cold is also a problem.

What is considered “cold” for Hong Kong?
@xyyyyx3247
@xyyyyx3247 4 месяца назад
@@zakaryloreto6526 , if a hiker is lost and has to spend the night out in the open. Even in warm climate area, if you get caught in the rain and your shirt is wet, you will soon feel the cold. There is not cabin for you to take shelter on these trails against rainy weather. Even on Table mountain in Cape Town, in the peak of summer, there has been many casual hikers that ended up in serious trouble because of the weather. And Cape Town is a winter (May- Sept) rainfall area. The mist that covers the terrain in enough to drench you. A slight breeze on wet clothes (without a jacket) hypothermia sets in quickly.

@@zakaryloreto6526 , Hong Kong experiences cold fronts at times .... and this can cause problems if you are out in the open. If you are lost while hiking and have to spend the night out in the open. Getting wet from the rain and only wearing a shirt, you will soon feel the effects of hypothermia.

@@zakaryloreto6526 , as an example, even on Table Mountain in Cape Town, many day hikers gets lost in the mountain and the mountain is located at the doorsteps of a city, and people underestimate the dangers of this mountain. Cape Town has a winter rainfall period (April to September). They are so ill prepared even in summer (Nov to Feb) wearing shorts and T-shirt. No jacket. Many have had to be rescued when the weather changes and the mist comes in. Once you are wet from the mist, and a breeze starts blowing, you will soon feel the cold.

@@zakaryloreto6526 , not sure if you have visited Hong Kong? I have been to Hong Kong on 3 occasions , all during their winter period. It does rain on certain days & gets a bit chilly too, and that is in the Kowloon city area. I would guess from my hiking experience, the mountainous / hilly area in Hong Kong will also have these colder environment than the built-up areas of a city scape.

Those trails are dangerous. You could lose one of your limbs without noticing them right away.

The most important thing is don't overestimate your strength and endurance..... Also I strongly recommend those being rescued need to pay for a significant portion of the cost spent on searching them unless the rescue crew waive it. This will promote "responsible hiking" practice
