Hike to Courthouse Rock & Quilliams Cave (Great Smoky Mountains)

I hiked in the Great Smoky Mountains on a manway (unmaintained trail) to Courthouse Rock which is a unique, one-of-a-kind 60 ft rock formation in the Smokies. Although I was somewhat familiar with this hike from what I had read, I wished I had researched it a little better because I missed several great historic spots along the trail. Luckily, I ran into one of my subscribers, Larry Johnson on the trail and he told me about Quilliams Cave as well as the Moonshine Cave. There is so much history and great sites on this off-trail hike that I will definitely have to go back and do this one again on a day when its not so foggy and rainy.
Some cool sites to see along this trail:
Moonshine Cave
Road Turn Branch Falls
Quilliams Family Homesite
Courthouse Rock
Judge Rock
Quilliams Cave
Quilliams Falls

Hi y’all! I mentioned this in the video but I’d love to get your feedback on what videos you would like to see me do or hikes you’d like me to take. I’ll try my best to accommodate any suggestions for trails! Just call me your hiking DJ!! ☺️❤️

How about Norton Creek Trail or maybe Ghost House Trail? I feel like your narration of either of those would be lots of fun! :-)

It was good. I posted this in hike the smokies with some pictures: A beautiful day to be in the Smoky Mountains. A couple of firsts. My first time going to Courthouse Rock and my first time using the All Trails App. All descriptions of this "secret" trail, mention bushwacking, off trail, not maintained by the park service. I initially took a wrong turn on a trail beside a creek. Then I turned on the All Trails App. Quickly realized I was not on the correct trail. I kept the app on the rest of the trip. Once on the right trail it was cleared just like maintained trails in the park. Downed trees had sections sawed out so you could walk through without stepping over logs. For the most part the trail was easily identifiable. There was a couple of places near the top where I used the app to make sure I was going in the right direction. There appeared to be a couple of home sites with collapsed chimneys. Once at the rock it was larger than I imagined. It is the only freestanding rock formation inside the Smoky Mountains. Great views of Mt. Leconte and the Chimney Tops. Defacing rock walls in the park is not new. G A Barber carved his name way back in 1827. I climbed up on a shelf of the wall, kicked back, fixed a quick lunch, and enjoyed the view.

Just doing some research on this hike, I found your video because I was looking for caves to explore in the Smokies. Apparently if you continue on instead of turning at the cairn, there is a huge one up there. The route is on Alltrails, it traces yours then continues to the cave. It's called Quilliam Cave via Courthouse Rock Trail. Happy trails!

Hi Gretchen. As always Susie and I love your videos. I got the impression that you will go back when the weather is better and you will have some views. In your video at about the 6:00 mark that boulder gives excellent views of Chimney Tops. Also at about 6:30 the trail that goes straight continues on for 100 yards or so and terminates with a view that is one of my favorites in the park. On a clear day it is fantastic! Be sure to check it out.

Hi Tony and Susie!! I’m definitely going to go back it’s a beautiful area! Thank you so much for letting me know about those areas. When it gets a little warmer I’m going to go back and see the views and go to the other spot you’re talking about. Thank you!!

Great Video Gretchen 👍 I wish you could have had a clear day. those views are amazing. Lisa and I were lucky enough to meet the Quilliams Family on that trail a few weeks back. Kevin told us a few stories of his great great grandfather who lived there back in the day. Its on my video. Now can we make the rain stop?

I was wondering if you could do a video sometime about the effects of humidity as far as sleeping in it as well as the effects it has on down materials. for us subscribers out west that don't know what it's like! I've been thinking of moving there to get away from the high cost of living and the politics out here.

Hello my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing another fine video. You are quite an adventurous person, trekking out on your own under less than ideal conditions. You always seem quite calm and you never let anything deter you. Are you and Jerry still planning to do some hiking/backpacking in California this year. I will update you on the Sierra mountain snow conditions in another one of your future videos. Thank you this, well narrated guided tour. Be safe out there. 🤗

I feel more calm and safe in the mountains than anywhere. ☺️ I’m not sure if we can make it out this year or not but we definitely plan to head that way in the near future! I want to do some hiking on the PCT. As always, thanks for your support Ronald!

Hiking with Braids minus the taller peaks and less humidity the forest is very similar to that of Oregon and Washington. lush green with alot of water. I'd say your climates are most similar during winter months.

Thanks so much for your videos. I finally made it yesterday and it was a clear day. I went a little too far and turned on the AllTrails and found the trail. All except one long stone is now missing and with all the leaves down it took a bit to find. Waterfall and overlook was super and I also climbed the judge rock.

I LOVE this! I've been to the Smokies three times and never done any off-trail hiking, but the more I read and see, the more I am tempted to try. One idiot question ... how do you keep the AllTrails map up on your phone? I have the app, and tried to use it my last two visits, but once I got deep on a trail, I lost my connection. Any tips? Will a handheld GPS be a better option?

You should still be able to use the app in airplane mode. I find they work better that way.

A great video, love to watch these when I can’t get on the trail myself! Glad to see some warnings on off-trail hiking, too often people ignore that. Love to hear a bit more about the right kind of prep for solo hiking, off-trail, wildlife encounter, etc. Keep up the great work!

How cool! I had no idea this existed! I found your channel when looking for some video of Lakeshore trail, which I hope to backpack this Fall. So glad I stumbled upon it! I'm trying to watch all of your Smokies/TN videos before I follow along with you on the AT. :) You've inspired me to get out and do more and longer solo hikes and I am definitely going to try solo backpacking soon!
