My mom is a hiker and she always says that one of the most important things is that you need to listen to your own instinct/body and know your limits, no matter how prepared you are or how strong you are, the moment you start having this feeling that maybe you should stop is when you really should stop. It does not matter if you go with more people and you are embarrassed or feel pressured by another person YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST!!

I fell over 200 feet off the third peak on April 3, 2013. I too was an avid hiker. I had lots of experience on that trail and many other steep ones but none of that mattered. I was simply walking on the saddle between the second and third peak, closer to the third, when the ground broke beneath me. I tumbled and smashed on cliff, trees, cliff, trees, until I departed my body and experienced death. No human came to save me but God had mercy on me. I was sent back to my body. I somehow found a way to crawl and climb out of the steep cliffside with a torn shoulder, unresponsive arm, broken ribs, shattered shins, herniated spinal cord. God helped me get to safety. I am finally somewhat beginning to physically rehabilitate in a comprehensive manner. Shit sucks. Not worth it

@@biketothetop Hey! Shit happens and humans make mistakes! And sometimes those mistakes are impossible to financially recover from. Especially if you’re spending time in the hospital to recover instead of out earning money. In 2017 my Mom made the “mistake” of falling down a flight of stairs and hit her head so hard on the concrete basement floor that she gave herself a very severe “sub-dermal hematoma”. She needed to be airlifted to emergency brain surgery to save her life, which put her in a hardly responsive coma for 4months. After she got out of the coma she couldn’t keep a job due memory loss issues and now our entire family has to support her. My family set up a GoFundMe to raise funds to go and see my Mom at the hospital which was 180 miles away! I was 17 at the time and had just gotten my 1st full time apprenticeship but couldn’t make any money because I had to visit my Mom in the hospital one town away. I was told multiple times it might be the last time I would see her alive, she was hanging on by a thread and I sacrificed all of my money to be there for those potentially last moments of her life. Friends & family raised enough money to pay for multiple tanks of gas to get there, it $300 each time!! And we raised enough money to even pay for the helicopter that airlifted her. We didn’t have $5000 on hand to dole out to an air ambulance and fire service. SOOOO MANY people helped us out on GoFundMe that I sincerely feel like I need to help in the same way. Maybe if you or your family members make enough “mistakes” you’ll come to the same perspective 🤫

Hikes range in difficulty and danger and you have to have a realistic and honest assessment of your abilities vs the paths challenges. Saying "people are still gonna do it" sure and people die on everest yet every year 700+ people safely summit. It's not the mountians or trails that kill you its ego and stubbornness.

And I always found it surprising the number of people that would attempt a serious climb or even an advanced trail without properly preparing their skill set or physical strength. It's a problem that seems to show up on the easiest route up a peak. I've seen it on Half Dome, Mount Shasta, Mount Rainier, and even on Denali in Alaska where they actually screen climbers before issuing permits. I am not an avid hiker but I love climbing mountains and hiking. I thought it was an easy hike but it was not. I visited Hawaii back in end of september 2021 and decided to go on the Olomana 3 peaks. Even before I got to the top of the first peak, it was an extremely difficult hike with lots of climbing on rocks. I mean LOTS of rock climbing. I stopped after I got to the top of the first peak and decided it was too dangerous. On my way down, I nearly tilted sideways as I was climbing down the rocks, and I almost fell down a cliff. Who knows how long the fall would have been, and I'm glad I'm alive. I'm so grateful for the miracle and that I made it out alive. I also slammed by bottom to the rocks as I'm climbing down the mountain and injured it badly. I couldn't walk for a couple of days. This hike is very dangerous, please be very careful and pay attention.

When I was in the Marine Corps I just got to my unit in Kaneohe and a fellow Marine that had been there longer took me on a hike on some beaten path real close to the pali lookout where there was some B17 plane wreckage. I thought it was going to be your basic run of the mill trail hike but it was insane. Side scrolling underneath waterfalls where you had to keep your feet completely sideways because the ledge was too small for your foot. Any slight slip you plunge to your death onto rocks 100s of ft down. At one point we were pulling ourselves up the the side of the mountain by grabbing as much of the vegetation as we could in our hands to climb up. I remember multiple times my inner voice telling me it’s not worth the risk and I pushed through it anyway. Absolutely insane, I’m extremely lucky to be here today. Too many stupid adventures.

Most (or at least many) rock climbing deaths occur while climbers are on trails, rappelling or other activities that are not "peak difficulty" and where mental mistakes are more likely to happen. As others stated, this was not a hike. As climbing goes it doesn't look that difficult, but easy climbing on wet rocks without any protection has potentially fatal consequences. Not worth it.

My mother, her boyfriend, & I used to hike years ago during the late Spring and Summer months early in the morning to stay physically healthy before it gotten really hot as we would hike up at Squaw Peak here in Phoenix if I recall that was only 1,200ft. up in elevation. We didn't hike up all the way of course as we only carried bottles of water with us as we had a backpack with some supplies just in case we get injured and the scenery was gorgeous! Just because it wasn't at the top doesn't mean it's rewarding of your life for your body to be majorly injured just to see the beauty of a scenery on top of the mountain. The woman made a big mistake not following how her body felt inside her gut after reading what the top comment said as your instincts are your body's way of protecting you from the adrenaline rush as the woman pushed herself too far without knowing what the consequences may be. I've also checked the mountain height as it's 1,643ft. high and can see why she went way too far as that's quite high of a climb without the special equipment you need without getting hurt along the air thinner and temp lowering down to 5°F which may affect the mood of her body feeling cooler. What's most important is that she's still alive and okay which is a relief to see as being a hiker comes with lots of responsibility and physical strength in your legs that you have to train many months and possibly years for.

Seems like it needs to be clearer if this is a HIKE or CLIMB. I realize CLIMBERS will HIKE to a destination- but if it is a CLIMBING destination that needs to more clear. There are definitely shades of gray in there- but the difference could be life/death for people depending on their abilities.

Many great things have been accomplished by disregarding one's gut feeling and conquering the fear. To say that a person should always listen to their gut means for some people they will always live in fear of danger even if it is irrational danger. People rarely listen to their gut when it tells them something's wrong, but it's incredibly important to heed that feeling. Our brain collects an insane amount of information through our sensory organs and other inputs on a continuous basis. The brain can only consciously process so much of this information, but occasionally, your subconscious can detect abnormalities or strange inconsistencies in all that data being fed to your brain, stuff so small your conscious brain would never notice it. Your brain then subconsciously recognizes that combination of strange information as a potential threat, and activates what we call our "gut feeling" as a defense mechanism telling us to avoid the impending danger. To put it simply, your gut feeling is a very legitimate thing, and it only happens when the brain picks up on stuff that isn't right that you can't even notice. Listen to your gut feeling! It may save your life.

For those of you who are worried about this hike: Most of the danger is the third peak. The first two peaks are relatively low risk, but still be careful. The third peak requires a lot of risky rock climbing and using ropes to descend down two large faces of rock. The hike is absolutely worth it, just be careful and know your own limits. I would say if you have a lot of experience and are mindful about risk then definitely go for the third peak! Otherwise, spend some time elsewhere and perhaps get some bouldering/rappelling experience under your belt as well as make sure you are fit, prepared, and have good balance.
