The Mammoth Crest Loop, starting at Cold Water Campground in Mammoth Lakes, offers a stunning counter-clockwise hike that showcases some of the Sierra Nevada’s most stinning alpine beauty and panoramic mountain views. Beginning from the campground, the trail immediately climbs through dense pine forest, offering cool shade and tranquil surroundings. The ascent is steady when leaving Lake George toward the Mammoth Crest.
After a few miles, the trail opens up to breathtaking, expansive views from the “Crest” itself. Standing at this vantage point, I saw the dramatic Sierra Nevada range, including the Ritter Range, Banner Peak, and the sprawling John Muir Wilderness. The high-altitude vistas made the uphill trek well worth the effort.
From the crest, the trail began to descend toward pristine alpine lakes, known as the Deer Lakes. I made my way from the Deer Lakes over a scree pass to Dick Lake, quickly rejoining the Duck Pass Trail and dropping down to Barney Lake. I made camp at Barney Lake ans enjoyed the beautiful evening and night under the stars in the backcountry.
The next morning I packed up and travered doen the duck pass trail, passed Skelton Lake and Arrowhead Lake, both of which make perfect spots for a break or a refreshing dip. The terrain became gentler as I continues down the trail, winding through meadows and scattered patches of wildflowers.
The final leg of the trail lead me through peaceful forested areas, eventually returning to Cold Water Campground, completing the loop. At around 16 miles with 3,300 feet of elevation gain, the hiking loop provided an awesome overnight adventure in to the backcountry with stunning alpine scenery.

Great video! Quick question when you go to those places to film for RU-vid do you need a film permit or am I fine to record? Was just wondering because you’ve inspired me to go on my own adventures but I don’t want to brake any rules or laws

I just returned from eastern Sierra realizing how fortunate I am to live on the coast but have Sierras so close. Ur campsite looked identical to mine including the lake but it's not just shows the beauty of it all. Buen Camino

Always good to get high as quickly as possible -- and the eastern Sierra excels for that purpose. Thanks for making the extra effort to bring us along! Oh, and the OG hikers call those shallow lakes "tarns", probably after the Scotsman whose name now applies to the wilderness area you're in!

Fantastic hike! I camped at Barney Lake two weeks ago, so beautiful up there. Can't believe you get all your gear in that small pack! Regarding the talus field going up out of Deer Lakes, it looks like the trail has been tramped down so you can actually see it to follow it. Can you provide more details of what it's like and if you can actually see a trail to follow once you get up there?
@Sheety33
@Sheety33 6 дней назад
Thanks for your question! There is a little and very faint trail leading and winding up the talus pass from the upper deer lake.

Delightful. As usual, your presentarion makes me feel like I was there too and would always no what was coming up next if i got up off the couch and started walking. The preview at the beginning is effective. What was the date of your hike?

Great Video! I was just thinking that there were no new adventures to watch and I didn't want a gear review. This really hit the spot. I'll have to watch your stuff a bit. It's a lot like what I was trying to do with my recent stuff.

Thanks! Btw, i have a suggestion/request for a future episode: list of the best dayhikes IYO in Eastern Sierras. My family and I are avid hikers, but prefer dayhiking over backcountry camping. I'm not from Cali, so not familiar with all the little roads off of 395 that seem to provide access to some great gems. Would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Aw, so beautiful--and quite a long walk! Thanks for showing how you pack your stuff, I'm a beginner so need the hints and a lot of practice. Tried the mattress I got and it is so darn noisy--haha, will keep everyone awake I guess. I like the string light idea. Hope to get permits somewhere in those gorgeous mountains next summer. Thanks for the beautiful hiking scenery!!
