About: Mount Nantai (男体山, Nantai-san, lit. 'male-body mountain', also called Mount Futara (二荒山, Futāra-san)) is a stratovolcano in the Nikkō National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, in central Honshū, the main island of Japan. The mountain is 2,486 metres (8,156 ft) high. A prominent landmark, it can be seen on clear days from as far as Saitama, a city 100 km (62 mi) away.
Alongside Mount Nikkō-Shirane, Mount Nantai is one of the newest volcanic edifices in the National Park. Scientific studies of the volcano's geological structure began in 1957 and have established that it was formed roughly 23,000 years ago and that its last eruption was 7000 years ago. The volcano was classified as active by the Japan Meteorological Agency in June of 2017.
Since its first known ascent by Buddhist monk Shōdō Shōnin in the 8th century AD, Mount Nantai has become a sacred mountain and a site of pilgrimage in Buddhism and Shinto. As such, it is currently maintained by Futarasan jinja, a Shinto shrine whose go-shintai (御神体) constitutes Mount Nantai. With Tōshō-gū and Rinnō-ji, the site forms the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Archaeological excavations conducted here from the 19th to 20th centuries have unearthed many artifacts, dating from the end of the Nara period in the 8th century AD to the Edo period from the 17th to 19th centuries. Mount Nantai is listed among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains as written by mountaineer and author Kyūya Fukada. (Source: Wikipedia). Nantai is located North, Northwest of Tokyo and almost exactly west of Utsunomiya.
Geological Summary: Lava flows from the early stage of edifice construction dammed the Daiyo River, forming Lake Chuzenji; the dramatic Kegon waterfall plunges over this barrier. Nantaisan has an asymmetrical profile when viewed from the west as a result of late-stage collapse of the north side of the volcano. Two major late-stage eruptions ejected large amounts of scoria, followed by the emission of pyroclastic flows. The latest effusive activity produced the Osawa lava flow, a thick, viscous dacitic flow that traveled from the breached crater down the N flank. The Bentengawara pyroclastic-flow deposit representing the latest known eruptive activity was radiocarbon dated at about 10,000 years Before Present and was emplacement following a quiescent period of about 3000 years. Hiking Mount Nantai : After having such a great stay at the Fairfield Marriott in Utsunomiya the previous night and after hiking Takaharayama on November 6th, I decided to stay at The Fairfield Marriott in Nikko (the evening prior to hiking Nantaisan). From the hotel to the Nikko Futarasan Jinja Chugushi Shrine 日光二荒山神社 中宮祠 it was about 35 minutes however Google Maps took me on tollroad causing me an additional 15 minute delay in backtracking for part of the stint.
I arrived at the Shrine about 730 AM and the upper parking lot directly by the shrine was almost full already with many folks that had already started the climb. I was a bit eager to climb and after taking a couple pictures and adjusting my gear, I simply started the hike but failed to both register and pay the fee (I did actually pay the fee of about 1500 Yen when I returned from the hike, apologizing for my error)
AllTrails: Main hike link. Out and back is 9 KM. Intense uphill, rock scaling: www.alltrails.com/explore/tra...
Recommended Gear: I hiked on November 7th, 4 days before they closed the trail for the winter. In my case, I got overheated at the bottom and while doing the most difficult inclines so I shed layers but the upper 10% and summit was VERY cold so I was adding back clothes. I would recommend whatever time of year you go to take plenty of water, energy bars (food), wind or rain jacket, hiking boots with good traction a must and most definitely a hiking stick. I bought a Mont Bell carbon retractable stick with anti-shock and this stick was the MVP of all my gear.

Thank you Bekzod, yes I was surprised too given the previous day hiking Takaharayama I was very sore. Thank you for watching. I’ll be back in 3 weeks hiking another 15 volcanoes. I have drone this time as well so should have some nice views of the mountain.

Thank you Amar, what time of year are you going? Nantai closes after mid November as it’s considered part of the temple. Overall tochigi prefecture has some amazing hikes. There are 4 active volcanoes in Tochigi. Nasudake (you can take ropeway up and shorten the hike and time dramatically or you can do the longer hike up and around to Asahidake then come down ropeway. Takaharayama is also still considered active, off the beaten path but long aggressive hike…I have another video posted in that one. Nantai and Nasudake are my favorites in tochigi prefecture + lots of onsen area around both. Nikko-shirane is also active and borders Gunma prefecture. This is a fairly long aggressive hike as well. I hiked Nikko this year but have not posted video yet however I do have the hike route posted one my website at Volcanicjapan.com (see the my Guide area).

@@volcanicjapan Thanks for all the tips! I'm planning for end of September to end of October (approx.). I hope to time the Nikko part right for autumn colors, but I read that this year the dates were shifted due to the heat so will have to wait and see. I have some hikes planned for other parts of Japan too (Asahidake on Hokkaido, Kamikochi, Mt. Aso) but every video I watch makes me want to add another!

I agree, September to mid-November is best hiking season. This year (2023) was different than last year. 2022 was cool and dry with this year being warm and wet. I had to alter my planned hikes/climbs significantly this year. If you want to get a lot of “bang for your buck” and you are planning to hike Aso, you might also checkout Unzen (Heisei Sinzan), Kuju, Yufu, and Tsurumi. I was able to hike all 4 this year (including Aso) in 4 days. The mornings one most of them with the exception of Unzen were all misty so was difficult to have “views” until midday to late in the afternoon. If you are planning one trip to hike in Hokkaido but also hike in Kyushu region, the travel alone can eat into your precious time allowance especially if you only have a 2 week trip (like many folks do). If this is a rare trip and you are unsure of return travel then go for it however if you plan to return yearly, I would suggest concentrating your climbs/hikes regionally which will all you to get many more climbs in. Weather is always a factor. If you are hiking alone, I would advise bear bells (at the very least) you can pick them up at most sporting goods stores in Japan (the bears are getting bad). Bells will at least warn them you are in area. Most hiking trails have lots of hikers so usually not an issue to no have them. Reach out anytime if you have questions. I still have video from hikes at Osorezan, Hokkadasan, lake towada, Unzen, Aso, Kuju, Yufu, Tsurumi, and Myogi to post from this years trip. My website has many of them along with hike routes and my contact information.

@@volcanicjapan Thanks a lot :) I guess with the weather, it's really a wait and see kind of thing. I've managed to save enough over the years to actually visit Japan for more than a month, so I'm planning a trip covering the whole country.

Nice to hear and safe travels. One more recommendation is to use booking.com. I travel to Japan very often and grew tired of Airbnb communication to schedule etc… using booking.com, you can find very good “business hotel” accommodations which are clean, new (in many cases), and that have public bath (onsen -> hot springs type). #Booking.com in my opinion is great because I can sometimes make last minute changes to my schedule based on weather impacting my hikes AND in most cases free cancellation or credit. It’s my preferred method of booking places to stay AND I usually only pay 60-90 USD/night. Next year I buy my camper van but still I will use Booking.com for stays when not using camper van. Are you using JR Pass or do you plan to rent car? If you rent car, you can not go wrong with Toyota rent-a-car but making reservations can be tricky given weekend availability and some places will not allow you to rent one location and return to another location. Reach out if you have questions, happy to help.

Hey there, I will be making this climb in May, do you reckon the snow would have almost melted entirely or would crampons be recommended? I’ve done some climbs in Takayama but the icy paths there usually defrosted in march. However not sure with this elevation…

Hi JC, they officially open climbing at Nantai around the first week of May so I would recommend checking before you go. I’ve also heard that depending on the year, there is still generally snow pack up at higher elevations therefore you may need snowshoes or ice cleats. By June timeframe the snow has typically melted. When I hiked in November 2022, there was only ice growing out of the sides of the trail at higher elevations but no ice or snow piles. Check the weather before you go as well, I normally use a mix of sites to check weather and mountain conditions: www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Nantai/forecasts/2484. Also AllTrails which I use to map my hikes now has weather and trail conditions built in (but it’s not very detailed). Are you local or will you be traveling in for a hiking trip?

@@volcanicjapan thank you for the link and detailed response.im not a local and will be doing the climb as part of of a trip.due to the elimination of the JR pass since the last time I’ve gone I’m focusing on climbs I’ve been putting off in and around the Tokyo region. For this matter I’ll be in the Nikko tochigi area for 3-4 days. I think to be Cautious I’ll take some detachable crampons in my bag. If you have any climbs or trails for that matter you recommend that would be ok for novice climbers I’m all ears! Im ok with 6-9 hour durations stamina wise. Happy new years if you celebrate Edit:not eliminated. Subconscious word type. I meant to say due to the 40-70 percent price increase

Thank you JC, happy new year to you as well. I have been focusing purely on "active" volcanoes however if you would like to hike some of them relatively close distance from Tokyo (also with great onsen), I would suggest Gunma prefecture and to hike Mount Haruna and Mount Akagi. Haruna, Akagi, and Myogi compose the 3 great mountains of "Jomo". Haruna was added back to active list a few years back. For Haruna there is ropeway up and down however the hike is also very short....maybe an hour + to the top and another hour down. Additionally by Haruna, there is the Haruna-jinja (temple) which is beautiful (amazing rock structures and temples built into the rock). Akagi is also a relatively short hike....I believe I did the loop in about 3.5-4 hours however you will need to rent a car (here is the Toyota Rent a car reservation link for Takasaki station: rent.toyota.co.jp/eng/reservation/index01.aspx?keyword=Takasaki%20Station&shopMode=0). From Takasaki station driving to Haruna maybe about 45 minutes or from Takasaki driving to Akagi (maybe about 1 hour). Both locations are also composed of volcanic caldera (crater) lakes as well. Kustasu-Shirane (Yugama) crater is also cool to see however due to volcanic activity, the observation tower hike and most longer trails were closed off when I visited in late 2022. I have youtube videos for all these. You can also visit my website at volcanicjapan.com where I have blog on all these as well. Mount Asama could also be a great hike for you however would take around 6-7 hours to complete the "shorter course". Asama is very active volcano but truly some amazing views, scenery, hike overall....Another one close to Tokyo which could be a good hike for you that is volcanic active area is Hakoney. Hakoney is very well known for the onsen (hot springs) and usually has a lot of Tokyoites that visit the area but they also have some good hiking and volcanic fumeroles. I have visited this area in 2017 however have not yet hiked the trails there....I will do Hakoney this year around September timeframe.
