Hiking Boot review | Hi Tec, Summit WP, Duke of Edinburgh award recommended kit, walking boot 

I now own 2 Hi-Tecs. I have the 'Storm' which is made of a mix of suede and man made fabric. Its waterproof, has a good aggressive tread and is very well padded, but breathes well. I've been really happy with it. They are a thick boot, but also have some of the lightness and flexibility of a trainer. I also like that the a soles are high off the ground and give me a good clearance above the mud and wet. With loving the 'Storms', but wanting something a bit more hard wearing for very poor weather I have also bought some Hi-Tec 'Ravine' in full leather. One thing about them is, I have heard them recommended by some hikers whose braving of the elements is bordering on foolhardy. They will take just about anything you can throw at them. I use Nikwax TX spray on the suede/fabric of the Storms and intend to use Grangers wax or Renapur on the Ravines for waterproofing. I've owned some very expensive boots like La Sportiva and high end Salomons, but honestly it's just not worth the money. Hi Tecs are absolutely fine. Given boots are for clambering over sharp rocks and trudging through mud it's not worth wasting big money for fancy boots which honestly dont last any longer or perform any better. I've recently saved and invested in 2 high end Suunto compasses, the MC2-Global and a wrist mounted M9 -they should easily last me for life. I also bought a very nice waterproof Olight torch lately. People overspend on boots and coats and tend to skimp on equipment in my experience.
