Probably Karrimor, after paying £170 for Lowas and not impressed.Karrimor aint waterproof, but can be improved with waterproofing spray, and are VERY comfortable...and comfort means more than anything to me now when doing 5 mile walks.
Just found you channel a a couple of months ago and I've been watching your videos. It's nice to see someone that tries out the gear that most of us consider. Bought a pair of the Panther trousers from Sports Direct on your recommendation, best hiking trousers I've ever had 😬
In summer I use salomon x ultra 3 gtx shoes. 30km a day last summer for a week. Comfy out of the box. My summer hillwalking boots are Salomon quest uktras. In winter I have Grisport crusaders for walking and for crampon use a pair of Garmonts. All are good. The salomons are comfy out of the box. My first x ultras did over 1000km walking plus everyday use. The Grisport are bombproof and the Garmonts are stiff for step ins but of course hopeless for walking. The Salomon shoes grips are fine in everything except mud. The quests have never let me down.
I prefer Salomon for fit and design, not the cheapest by any stretch but you often get good offers if you're not bothered about the colour. Treads do wear quickly though, but I just find them so comfortable and I love the quick lace system. Usually by a half size bigger for a perfect fit.
I like your comment .. “i don’t really bother cleaning my boots, they are just going to get dirty again” .. I’m the same with socks ! The fabric boots always seem great at first, but even the best of them eventually leak as the waterproof membrane breaks down. I have just bought a pair of leather boots from Grisport and am very pleased with them so far. Leather boots always last long and are pretty easy to look after and keep them waterproof. Have you tried Grisport ?
I agree with the fabrics failing. I had two pairs of Salomons. First pair I never washed and I used to put them on radiator to dry after walks. the fabric cracked and leaked after 1 year. Got a new pair of Salomons and washed/reproofed them religiously and stopped using heat to dry but still got cracks and leaks in under a year. Both boots were over 100 GBP. I’m tempted to try a leather boot now but I’ve never had one before.
Catching up on the Daley Outdoors vids. Good little shoe comparison video Ben. I think there are some great value boots out there. I have the Saloman goretex GTX 3 boots. Have served me well so far. I had some leather cheaper HiTec boots for a while and lost a toenail wearing them due to constant rubbing! Thanks for the review Mr D. Ben
Just bought a pair of the Mountain Warehouse Rapid boots today for £34.99 with free delivery. The website does say this is a clearance item but they seemed to have most sizes and colours in stock. I obviously bought the brown ones because Ben is a fashionista. Also because brown is the colour of mud and my Royal Navy days imbued me with a deep hatred of cleaning boots!
Hi, excellent video, I have the extreme Field Waterproof wide fit boot and shoe from mountain warehouse in Ireland and they are very comfortable for walking, I always use the boots for all my wild camping trips, and the shoes as everyday walking with the family, walking the dog and my days off, the only thing I changed are the insoles as they come with very very very thin insoles to the point they is nothing, also they don't grip as much on some wet flat rock, they did send me flying a couple of times, but I like them. Thanks for the video.
For anyone that's interested: cleaning your boots is not only about appearance, it is about having your boot last longer. Dirt and especially any kind of decomposing residue will, over time, worn the materials faster than if the boot was clean. For context, I have years of experience in hiking, backpacking and some alpinism, and I also sell mountain gear at a retail store.
Another informative video thanks. I need to buy new boots for next winter season. My cold weather boots fitted, but this year we had extra cold weather, and with my extra thick socks, they didn't fit anymore. One to remember for next year when I buy a size larger. Obvious really, but easy (for dumb people like me) to forget when buying in the autumn.
I always get hi tec boots they ve been so reliable over the years and well comfy. Always do the job when I have a quick drive across to the peak district 👍. Always find a good pair for no more than £70
You need to invest in some 'Merrell' boots and shoes, I am in the States and this brand is very popular here. They are very light, comfortable and have good sole grip. I still wear a pair of the Merrell 45 degree hiking shoes, which I used hiking up Cats Bells in the Lake District 20 years ago, they are still going strong. I have other Merrells so the 45 degree one's are starting to wear out so I am nursing them before they are totally 'shot' and need to be thrown out. It is so difficult to do an adequate review on hiking boots & shoes as there are so many brands/types available in the marketplace. You can only review those you have experience using.
I've had a pair for them freedom Trail boots for the past 5 years and still going strong. I tend to think of them as my winter day hike boots but for the price they are brilliant.
Thanks for the review. I use Salomon gtx mid women's boots, very light and comfortable however not 100% but they do dry off quickly. Previously had a pair of Scarpa Terra gtx boots, but very heavy and felt cumbersome to walk in. Never tried Mountain Warehouse footwear but would consider it once my Salomon's fall apart. Thanks Daley x
Nice selection of boots there Ben. One can never have too many pairs of hiking footwear! I’m not a boot fan, but they are a must for our cold and boggy winters. I wear Hoka boots and they have been very comfortable but i’m looking forward to putting the trail running shoes on again in a few weeks time.
Cheers Anthony 👍 I’d not tried shoes before but I like the Salomon ones. I’ve been trying out some Decathlon ones for a few weeks now too and I really like them 👍
This is the 3rd time I've tried to comment now, it keeps disappearing it might be because I'm adding a link to my boots at go outdoors ?? Anyway great useful vid Ben, I love my Peter storm boots comfortable straight out the box I didn't need to walk them in, had them about 18 months and they're still going strong I wear them almost everyday and still totally waterproof and no signs of anything coming apart, think they are 80 quid in go outdoors, they're the Peter storm Caldwell? If anyone's interested, I won't put the link as I think that's why my comment keeps getting deleted by yt 😉
I wear boots from the Portuguese brand Elite made by a company called Trofal. They have been making boots since 1905. I have never found better ones, so the more I see these reviews the more I see that I made a good choice
Looking at a pair of Solomon Daintree today only because there's an awesome sale on them but worried about the grip and width, I'll probably end up getting another pair of Keen, the one's I've got now have served me well for years in grass, rocks, through rivers and even use them adventure riding(although that's going to change because i just broke my foot). Give Keen a go next.
That thing about certain colours ring cheaper is something I see a lot and often black is cheapest so I have ended up with a lot of black gear. Also I have some similar Salomon cross country running shoes and I needed to size up 1 1/2 sizes . 1 size up only gave me black toenails . My favourite boot was a sorrel boot but it has very poor grip in the mud so for cold and muddy or snowy I use boots by the North Face and just trying now for spring some by Salewa
Good video. The best hiking shoes I've ever bought are my Dachstein Nordic walkers- quite expensive but ultra comfortable and worth every single penny. The best hiking boots I've ever had are my Brasher Hillwalker GTX, again really comfortable for a leather boot. However if you want great value and quality, maybe look at surplus British Army boots, especially the ones made by Altberg as I've only heard good things about them. Cheers!
I have watched a few videos on ‘best walking boots’ and yet, I haven’t heard of anyone going for Doc Martin boots. Alas, not having ever owned any DM’s, I can’t comment on them but I know people who swear they are the ultimate in comfortable footwear.
Old saying spend as much on ya bed and boots as you can cos if ya not in one ya in the other altberg or scarpa real good boots expensive but last salomon very narrow fits
Got myself a pair of karrimor cheetah boots a few months ago due to the good star rating, the looks and the fact they were extremely comfortable when I bought them.... Unfortunately my feet started feeling damp from simply walking through wet grass, and the front sole on one boots came loose after minimal use. Subsequently did a more thorough look through the reviews and this seems to be a common problem with karrimor boots these days. Needless to say, I'll be avoiding this brand in future, as well as Sports Direct when it comes to hiking boots, as they seem to be pushing karrimor to the exclusion of other brands.
I’ve owned two pairs of Salomons and neither have lasted a year without the fabric cracking and the seams between fabrics failing. I’m going to try sealant but I’m tempted to try full leather this time.
Tbh I pay a lot for my boots because I've got bunions only manufacture who makes boots specific for this is hanwag the boots are top notch but very expensive
If you can bend the sole easily there no good for rougher terrain OK for paths and thing but cheap boots soon hurt after few miles and soon get wet keen and obox arnt bad for cheaper boots
The insoles moving is the absolute worst. Can never quite get them back to a good position. Also wear the heavy boots on short walks, strength training!
@@daleyoutdoors I just bought boots today. Tried shoes too but boots felt more hard wearing for winter. Gelert Horizon Mid boots, sports direct. Mainly favourable reviews, but some people say not waterproof, some say they are waterproof!!! They are sold as waterproof. I guess I won't know til I try them, but they've got my money now
